*WARNING: THIS THREAD IS QUITE LONG, MOST OF WHICH CONTAINING AN EXPLANATION OF THE GAME.* Okay, long story short: Spoiler My internet died over the weekend, and I was looking through some of the stuff on my computer. I stumbled across a game that I had but forgot about called Cube 2 or Sauerbraten. Anyway, Cube 2 is a free downloadable game that plays similar to Quake II and Unreal Tournament. Not only that, but the game itself, has a built-in map editor unlike anything I've every seen before. The game also features built-in online play, LAN, and some single player vs. bots. Unlike most map editors, where the user selects different preset objects such as crates and barrels, Cube uses a 6 direction heightfield or octree in which the user can manipulate cubes to form the map's geometry. Cube 2's Editing Interface In other words, players can push, pull, deform, and spawn cubes to add the geometry to their maps. Not only that, but players can select from a wide variety of different textures and map models to add more details to their creations. After the geometry phase is done, players can add dynamic lighting effects to give their map personality. Screenshot showing Cube 2's Dynamic Lighting Players can also add several other unique features such as jumppads (equivalent to Halo 3's gravlift.), spawn points, weapons, armor etc. as well as geometry features such as death barriers, boundaries, water, lava and glass. Screenshot showing Cube 2's power-ups and weapons If that weren't enough, users with 3D Modeling or Photoshop Experience can add new textures and map models for the game, as well. Legos anyone? I'm actually surprised that there isn't a section for this game here at Forge Hub, alongside Halo 3 and Far Cry. For anyone who wants to check this game out, you may download it or get more information for FREE at This Website Useful Websites for Beginners: http://members.iinet.net.au/~passarello/newbieguide.html Quadropolis
How on god's earth is this free??? Also, how many people play it, and what are the system reqs? I might give it a try
so the game is called cube 2? wow ill have too google this i really want it! and its not that bif of a file! is this supported by xfire?
you'll need at least: 1GHz or higher CPU, 256MB RAM and a GeForce 4 MX or equivalent GPU. For maximum settings, you'll need at least: 2GHz or higher CPU, 512MB RAM and a GeForce 6600 or equivalent shader model 2.0 GPU. The number of people that play it varies, typically though there's about 3 pages of games in the server list at any one time. I've included a link to the game's website, so you don't have to google it! Anyway, it supports Windows, Mac, and Linux to my knowledge, it might support xfire, but you'd probably have to ask some one who knows a little more.
Looks sick. I found this tutorial for beginners (like me) online. Helped me learn the controls. http://members.iinet.net.au/~passarello/newbieguide.html
Cube is available as a port to the iPhone and iTouch. The controls are a bit iffy, but it's a free FPS that runs well on a handheld MP3 player.. What more could you want? Check the Apps Store under "Top Free Apps" for it.
wow the download was so quick and easy, this game reminds me of halo 2 a little bit. It is really a good game considering it being free, the controls are a bit slow and annoying. Don't like the single play at all, and multiplayer is pretty good. Haven't tried the map editor yet, but hopefully it will be easy to work. Forgehub should make a section for this game though, Now im going to download some maps Also I found this cool site to get maps/mods. Quadropolis
Well, since rep was removed I guess I'm gonna have to do this manually. Redearth gave The Cheat +Rep The Cheat is Raptor Jesus. Gonna download now, I'm interested in the map editor.
That game looks way too good to be free. It sounds amazing. I might actually get this while I'm waiting to get my other games.
This i very very cool I love building so this could be a great use/tool for me glad you found this i'm very happy! thank you
you will want to download this game. for being free and all i was rather suprised. the graphics are not the best ever, but that didn't distract me at all. the gameplay is really good. It's fun to play and rather addicting. great game to play if you are kicked of the xbox. kinda confused how to make the maps though. but otherwise, since it is free you might as well download it.
If only halo 3 allowed you to play on custom .map files. It would be soo much fun. They were going to allow it for far cry 2 on the consoles but, ran out of time.
I would have to agree with you there. Controls could be a little more streamlined for better play. Joystick/controller options would have been nice. And I also found the single player to be lacking. Not sure if this has happened to anyone, but there is a certain driver file or something that needs to be downloaded for the game to run for any extended amount of time. The game will run on a laptop, but you will need a USB Mouse in order to use the Map Editor.
Cube 2 is a pretty cool game. One guy in my forums is always making Custom Cube 2 Maps for that game. I played it, but the gameplay movement was way too fast. It was too hard to control when just the slightest movement would send your character flying across the map.
I've bin playing this game for a few days and I'm liking it. It has a TON of maps, havent had a chance to download or make makes because I'm not sure how to. Everyone is always playing instagib but I got used to it and actually like it the most. There are many gametypes and bot matches. It plays a lot like unreal tournament which will be hard to adapt from say call of duty because of the movement speed and the weaponry. Being free, I would recommend anyone to try this.
I've always wondered if other people played this. Question is now answered. I havent looked into map making or downloading yet. Thanks for sharing this to others!
