MY Xbox is connected to my compatible netgear router through a wireless connection. I use the xbox wireless adapter. I always call xbox support and ask them "How do I change my NAT to open?" (I know you have to set up your network and not your box) They always say contact your ISP. So I do that, and they say call xbox. So can anybody give me a step by step how to?

If you could tell us your model number that would be nice. I know my WGT624 doesn't respond to port forwarding.

Simply go here and scroll down to your netgear router model. Select it, then on the next page scroll down to Xbox Live 360.

Also, you'll need to do more if you're using a DSL modem as well.

Quoted for truth. Its easily the best tutorial out there. Listen to Raw King, he knows what he's talking about.

I have the same Netgear Router as you....so many hours were wasted trying to open my NAT...so so many hours.....

That's the guide I used when my NAT was not open and it worked ever so perfectly. I would even trust my life with that guide, however it didn't work for my friend because he had a router in which the guide was out-to-date, but I have a linksys and the guide was up-to-date for that one.

Imagine a direct line between your Xbox 360 and your router (assuming it's wireless). The less obstructions there are (walls, ceilings etc.), the more likely you are to get an Open NAT.

NAT has nothing to do with the connection between your Router and the Xbox. It's the connection from Router to router, so wired or wireless, your NAT will be the same.

It's 2 things, one port allows communication (which is why 2 people with incompatible NATs can't private chat or hear each other in game) and the other allows them to connect to each other (they still can if host has open NAT, but won't be able to hear each other in game). But if your router is not receiving this information, it can't give it to your Xbox even via wire.

    Good links,heres another from xbox.com:
Xbox.com | Xbox LIVE Discussion - Xbox 360: Static IP and NAT Guide

This guide is made to help you set up your Xbox 360 with a static IP address. There are certain things you have to edit under the Systems blade and Network Settings. Now you ask your self why do I want to use a static IP. Well you don't have to, but there are advantages to using a static IP, like port forwarding and such. Also included is a video on how to Open NAT.
You will need NAT open to play with gamers around the world, it's very easy to change this option to open.

Follow these video steps: (this example uses a Linksys interface)

    Opening NAT video assist. Wigigproductions

Also some of you I see on here have problems connecting a lot of times, this may happen because your older brother or whom ever it is has a static IP set up either because their hosting a website or running a server to host one, which in that case it's a good idea for them to use a static IP so therefore you'll need to set up your 360 to use a Static IP along with them if you'd like.

It's important to setup a static ip address, if you are going to use port forwarding with certain ports for gaming. When your port forwarding is setup, your router will forward ports to an ip address that you had specified, without setting up your static IP port forwarding may only work once but once you restart your 360 it will fail, and after restarting your Xbox 360 might get a different address. When this happens the ports will no longer be forwarded to your Xbox 360's ip address and therefore the port forwarding configuration will not work.

    What is an ip address?

IP addresses are four sets of numbers separated by periods that allow computers to identify each other. Every computer must at least have one ip address, and two devices should definitely never have a same IP address. If there are two computers with same IP's than we got a problem, because you're not connecting on Xbox Live nor the Internet. Look at it like your social security number, each set of numbers identifies a different person.

Most routers assign dynamic IP addresses by defaul. The reason for this is that there is no configuration required to get the IP. All the console user has to do is plug the cables in and their ready to go. The router is in charge of assigning these and making sure their not the same. Every time a computer or console reboots it asks the router for an ip address. The router then gives it an ip address that has not already been handed out to another device or console.

    Important:

When you set your Xbox 360 to a static ip address, the router does not know that the Xbox 360 is using that ip address, so the same ip address may be handed to another device or console next time, so there for the devices would be prevented from connecting to the net. So therefore make sure you assign different static IP addresses to your devices, so that the DHCP server does not assign an automatic one.

Tip: ( Another name for dynamic IP address server is DHCP)

Video for setting up Static IP:

Setting Static IP for Xbox 360 video assist. by Corrrupption

    - Setting up a static ip for your Xbox 360

    Step 1:
Turn on your Xbox 360. You should now be at the following page. Then push the A button.

    Step 2:
Select the System tab on the right hand side of the screen. Then push the A button.

    Step 3:
Select the Network Settings button. Then push the A button.

    Step 4:
Select the Edit Settings on this page. Then push the A button.

    Step 5:
Select the IP Settings,IP Address,Subnet Mask,Gateway area. Then push the A button.

    Step 6:
Select the Manual option, and then push the A button.

    Step 7:
Select the IP Address option, and then push the A button.

    Step 8:
Enter the the ip address you want to use for your Xbox 360 into this page.

    Important:

It's important to choose an ip address that not in your router's dhcp range. You can check this by login in to your router and looking at it's dhcp or LAN page. Alternatively you can just pick an ip address that is not close to the ip address your xbox was previously using. For instance if your xbox was using something like 192.168.0.2, then you would want the new ip address to be something like 192.168.0.200. If your xbox was using something like 192.168.0.240, then you would want the new ip address to be something like 192.168.0.2. Only the last group of numbers on the ip address should change, and that group of numbers would range from 2 to 254. Once you are done entering the ip address press the A button.

    Step 9:
Select the Subnet Mask option on this page, and then push the A button.

    Step 10:
Enter the subnet mask of your network in to this page. The subnet mask for almost all home networks is 255.255.255.0. When you are finished push the A button.

    Step 11:
Select the Gateway option on this page, and then push the A button.

    Step 12:
Enter the ip address of your router into this page. Your router is your network's gateway. Then push the A button.

    Step 13:
Select the Done option on this page, and then push the A button. You should be prompted on whether you want to test the connection or not. Select the Test Xbox Live option, and then push the A button.

    Step 14:
Your Xbox 360's IP Address should be Confirmed. If it is not then you have made an error in setting up the static ip address for your xbox 360.

You may also have to specify the DNS servers your xbox 360 will be using. This step is required when your network's router is not passing the dns server info to the computers that have static ip address properly. You will need to find what DNS servers your 360 should be set on. The easiest way find this out is to give your Internet Service Provider a call. You should get two ip addresses, one for the primary dns server and one for the secondary dns server from them. Now one more time get back to the Edit Settings page of your xbox 360:

A.) Click the DNS Settings area, and then press the A button.
B.) Click the Primary DNS Server option, and then press the A button.
C.) Enter the primary DNS server address your isp gave you on this page. Then select the done button.
D.) Now enter the secondary DNS server in to the secondary dns server section. When you find yourself back at the Edit DNS Settings page, select the Done option.
E.) Then press the A button. You should be prompted on whether you want to test the connection or not.
F.) Select the Test Xbox Live option, and then push the A button.

That's not true. I had a closed NAT, fiddled around for several months, and now it's open. Plus, having a more compatible router only makes it somewhat easier to open your NAT, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be open.

Plus my Netgear Router is older than time, but it still works great, just need to update the firmware every so often.

Netgear routers are a ***** when it comes to hooking up with xbox live. I'm with draw the line on so many wasted hours trying to open it up. Best advice I can give you is to go to your router settings (starts with 198 and end with 0.1 or 1.1 when you enter it into your browser), the password stuff should be username admin password: password, or a variation of that, I honestly can't remember, you can look it up. Go down to UpNp, and turn it on. Then go to the port forwarding area, and delete all of the ports forwarding, as UpNp can be interfered by port forwarding. I believe that is how my Netgear CG814WG v2 got my NAT to open. Sorry if the instructions are vague or if they have already been repeated in the thread, just trying to help out a fellow miserable netgearian (I made that last word up).

If this or other instructions doesn't work:

Re-search your router's manual> I searched up mine and they had a Read-Me manual. I found how to change the NAT and yeah that should do it for you.
