My school has this uber-awesome tech lab, e.g. computer center. There's new Vista machines and new Mac machines everywhere. Well, I was bored after school, so I logged into one of the Vistas, and started screwing around with it. They have this networking thing installed that allows students to have their own private folders over the network. I think it's Novell something.

Anywho, so they have this transfer drive set up for all the students to use. It's cool, because it has about 60 GB of info. However, it's mostly loaded up with crap games like Worms and Warcraft III and other crap that stupid middle-schoolers/underclassmen like to install on it so they can play video games at the tech center when none of the tech administrators are around.

So this one kid, a fresmen, started calling me a noob or something, because I didn't want to play Worms or whatnot. Now, I really just didn't have time for that crap. I had to do homework and other stuff. But he just kept bothering me so much, that I told him to give me his student account number. Incidentally, our student account numbers are the same as our account names. In example, if my account number was 2011001, then that means that I am the first student from the class of 2011 to be registered as a user on the network.

So he gave me his number, and immediately thereafter, I modified the permissions settings of the transfer drive to make his specific account not be able to access the drive at all. For some reason, NTFS's file permissions had this big loophole in it that I discovered way back when, that, even though my account had no administrative abilities at all, I could basically create filters for certain users on the network that designated how they could access the drive. I could, for an example, make it read-only, hide certain folders and files, or make it so they can't even access it.

However, soon after I made the changes, I noticed that I couldn't go back to edit it. I looked back at what I edited, and I realized that I had mistakenly edited the "Everyone" Group. Basically, it was like I had set the filter for anything and everything.

    ****.

Soon after I logged out and went to a Macintosh computer, quickly, people started complaining that they couldn't access the Transfer drive. And as it turned out, the "Everyone" Group wasn't just stopping the students. The teachers, librarians, and even the admin accounts weren't able to access it. Which is puzzling, considering that the admin account is the one that has ownership over the drive.

Now, I'm freaking out, because I have no clue if they had a logfile recording the drive or not.

Yea, i got caught doing something (less) dangerous,
and they traced it back, and what they do to us is freeze the computers, Even the on/off button, so i had to unplug a whole line of computers when i took out the power cord.
IF you get caught at my school doing anything like that you lose Computers for the rest of your HS career.
Although i doubt they do it to anyone.

Yea, I found it funny when I hacked Norton 360 to alternate the accessibility for user profiles. I felt teh special.

Nemi, why did you have to do that? Well if your like me, you can find a way to get back in there and fix it.

Hmm, do you have any after school free time? Such as study-hall, or something?

Nemi, I'm so proud of you. :*) Hope you don't get in trouble for it 'cause I think the situation (besides any trouble you could get in) is hilarious.

It's in a completely different building, in a server room, that is either locked or occupied by the IT people.

And I'm unable to hack to get to it, because it runs Unix. And I don't know how to hack into Unix over networking yet.

I have an administrator account at my school, I can do pretty much whatever I want. I even have access to every computer with this remote software thinger. But sometimes he has to lock me out for some school policy thing D:

All of the computers are all hooked up to one server, correct?

Separate servers, but they share the data to all the computers.

Are the admin accounts using different data?

    lol

I guess, but I'll only do that if they catch me. I might get the computer privileges taken away at school, if I'm unlucky.

Ask the teachers if you can help fix the problem. That's the only solution I can come up with if you want to get out of trouble.
