http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGHxVW1NbrQThis place in Uzbekistan is called by locals "The Door to Hell". It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The story of this place lasts already for 35 years. Once the geologists were drilling for gas.. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground. None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it's burning, already for 35 years without any pause. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there. http://www.englishrussia.com/?p=1830
If it's burning tons of natural gas, then it can't be good. That's like a coal factory with no scrubbers going non-stop for thirty years.
If it were having any negative impact on the environment then don't you think that, firstly, they wouldn't have done it in the first place and secondly come up with some way to stop or at least subdue it from burning. Sorry but it looks pretty fine to me. Also you think they would have let people so close to it if it were bad?...
I posted some pictures of this a while back in Titmar's Great Photos thread. There's some pretty awesome stuff that goes on in this world... BTW-somebody needs to help revive that thread.
I noticed you looking at that squid, for that past few mintues I've been browsing some of the really old threads. And yeah, really interesting this is. And it's always baffles me how you[Reynbow] know so much about everything. I'd hate to ever argue with you.
wow, 30 years, thats crazy, and yea, all this talking about HURTING THE ENVIRONMENT, not what needs to be worried about atm. nice find, Mr Wikipedia.
Wtf? Are you mentally challenged, this was lit 30 YEARS AGO! They didn't really have enviromental polices back then, and about people going close to it, they have people work close to burning gas in oil rigs and such, just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not happening.
