Yeah me too. I figured it wasn't. :p. Oh well, guess i'm not as smart as the smartest scientist. darn.

yeah i wouldn't go completely wireless, because in case of emergency, the good old wired methods may be needed to be used. like i wouldn't keep hospital equipment on that kind of power... not yet anyway.

Also with the electricity crisis thing, correct me if i'm wrong because i don't fully understand how it works, but if random spots are just feeding it out, will that use energy? or only if an object is connected?

If anyone cared about how it worked they would have used Google, as you did.
No one cares about how technology works, they just care about it working. For example, computers. A hell of a lot less people know how a computer works then actually use them...

    Common sense really, Nem.

Actually, I read that from a magazine somewhere.

Yes, I'm a techy person. I enjoy figuring out how things work, Reyn. I enjoy tinkering with things, adjusting them, making them do things it wasn't really intended to do. If I weren't, I'd be just another consumer not understanding how it was made, how it works. I'd only care that I'd get it and it does something useful.
Take a plastic toy. It's fun. That's all the kid cares about when s/he plays with it. It's all the parent thinks about when the kid plays with it. But the knowledge of where it came from and how it works is the most important part of the toy itself, in my opinion. Suppose it was made in China. Suppose the toy runs off of a proprietary rechargeable battery. Suppose the factory in China that it was made in poorly pays it's workers in order to shave costs, which translates into the power of the dollar slowly dwindling as we're sending all of our money towards China, and not bringin enough money back in to the economy. Suppose the battery that is used is a defective type that leaks battery acid and is highly flammable.

It's the same basic setup with any other thing. It's not that it 'works' and that's that. Sure, the president promises to lower taxes. Is that that? All you're gonna care about is that he'll lower the taxes? What if his plan to lower taxes includes lowering the budget for the Army, Education, EPA, water treatment, public services, police, etc. Would you support his plan then?

The coil will still be oscillating even if there's no other object. It's like a radio station that will be on 24/7 even if there are no radios receiving the signal.

So it would diminish energy or no?

I mean just by being on and sending out the waves and by if it sends out energy when there are no devices to connect to.

So it's the same way the radio-frequency wireless charger system worked, but with no interference this time.
Thanks for the explanation Nemi. I found it useful.

I think it would be cool to have one of the ones that electrocute you if you get in between the two units. I can imagine all the fun setting up traps for my puke-happy cats. :D

You still have to have the energy to send the magnetic field to the lamp. Could screw with electronics too.

    So we're still burning oil.

But that's the most awesome thing I've heard all day.

No Reynbow, you don't care how technology works. Don't mistake your own opinion for those of others.

And for those who are interested....
Has anyone seen the Induction based flashlight that requires no batteries?
    http://www.amazon.com/Flashlight-Magnetic-Induction-Bright-Rechargeable/dp/B000637LTY

The concept here is similar, but obviously less complex than wireless power.

It sounds pretty cool, next thing you know, they will have like electricity guns or something. I don't really trust this right now, you never know what could happen with a system like this.

I will empty my entire savings account for just one of these. Imagine that wireless power! No more worrying about charging my cell phone AH ha! or laptop or Wii remotes.

Isn't that basically just a miniature linear generator? They're like the kind that you wind up to power, but in an up-down motion. The magnetic field moving up and down creates an electrical current with the metal coils.

Edit: I think that this is the best invention ever made, hands down.

Finally, we can rid the Earth of cords. Now the Chevy Volt will never run out of power, that is if they put power systems on the side of the road.

I'll power my Wraith Army of Dawn with this. Dawn is coming

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree, but most people don't care is what I'm saying.

Actually you're wrong. I think it's you that shouldn't jump to the conclusions here. I know all about it, I was so facinated by how it worked and what it would take to make it possible. I was just saying that most people in the real world wouldn't care about how it worked, just that it worked. That's life.

I didn't think you were, don't worry. I wasn't insulted; I just wanted to set the facts straight there.

Less bawww more awe... for the technology.
    Well it rhymed well.

Let me tell you, those shake lights aren't as good as Crank Lights. Less repetitive motion injury.
    Solar powered flashlight... irony?

To be completely honest, this sounds extremely badass, but it almost sounds too good to be true...I mean, it sounds too simple to be perfected at a large scale...

I don't know, I just did a bit of looking around, this seems really quite legit...Jesus...They need to start pumping this out.

Tesla actually developed this in his own time, but his tower got knocked down. He was able to transmit power hundreds of feet. Of course.. his method included giant lightning bolts that shot from the tower.... Kinda dangerous.
