    [EDIT]

For those who have my same dilemma, you should really check out this link. It has a color-coded guide for every Apple product, from each iPod model to the different Macs, on when and if you should buy your desired product based on average product cycles and rumors. For example, if you look under 'iPod Touch', you see that in red, it says, "DO NOT BUY - UPDATES SOON".

Also, Draw the Line replied with some very helpful information I have embedded below.

    [ORIGINAL]

Well, first off, the question in general of buying an iPod Touch I've already decided. The reviews for it are high, I think it's extremely cool, and many people say it's a very versatile for a very slim and sleek design.

The only thing I'm concerned about is buying it and then a month later having a new model come out. Same thing happened when I bought my first and current iPod, the 1st generation nano. BAM! They almost instantly released the 2nd generation after. Believe it or not, but $299.99 is a big purchase for me, and I don't want to buy one and then two weeks later have Apple released the iLick or something.

So, are there any rumors of a new model coming up? Any Apple press conferences or conventions Apple might show one off at? Or is it safe to say I could get an iPod Touch and not have it get outmatched in a matter of weeks?

    Thanks!

Well, if it was between Nano and Touch, I'd certainly choose touch. However, I never considered the phone, as that's not an option for me. I suppose it's up to you if you want to switch your service to AT&T, etc. The $300 iPod Touch holds 8GB of songs, photos, videos, and applications.

I already have a crappy prepaid phone from at&t. But money is a object for my parents. Maybe after football season I can pay for my own with a job. My Nano got stolen when I had a house party. Gotta be careful with expensive stuff like this.

Prepaid? What really sucks is that my friend's prepaid phone gets service everywhere. My crappy 2-year-contact phone gets service no where.

iLick? Sounds like a sex toy.

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting an iTouch, so I'm just going to wait for the next model to come out and them buy that.

They release new models roughly every 6 months or so, so 6 moths from the release of the newest iTouch model is when the next one will come out. Its basically the vicious cycle of consumer electronics; as soon as you buy the product it is already outdated. So you might as well buy one now. I would actually recommend the 160 Gb iPod Classic, because of its massive storage space (mine is over half full already anyway, though).

Go 16GB, I have an 8GB Touch, its really nice and everything, but it'd be sweet to have a little room to move with movies etc.

if you wait for it, they finally will release the iLick, and you're gonna be like thats a dildo that i can listen to music to while im using it OMG

@ kratos: same here kratos!!! miines also half full, just from my previous music collection, and now i listen to music even more!

anyways, i suggest u guys just buy an ipod touch, or iphone, but its totally not worth it if you dont jailbreak it....the ipod is awesome the first 3 seconds like yippee!! and the iphone is like for 10 seconds, cuz its like yippee!!! + txting + calling etc....

trust me...you have to jailbreak it!

I have the 8 gig, and it's just plain awesomeness. It basically does everything(except sexual favors), but a lot of things revolve around the internet and the battery goes quickly during videos. But I say get it.

Jailbreaking is a must because that is how you get gaming system emulators on your iTouch.

I don't recommend it, actually. I jailbroke mine and I've just been dealing with a lot of crap now. And product plans don't replace iTouches if they have been bricked by hacking...
