Now this is a hardcore topic. Do you believe that torture is ever an appropriate measure for the government to use for the means of gaining information? Do you feel that no matter who its used on that it is too immoral, or that when dealing with extremists you have to resort to extreme measures?

IMO its an acceptable method to use against terrorists due to their radical mentality, but not okay for use on regular prisoners of war

    Discuss.

No it's not acceptable to anyone.

Acceptable use on muslims? You may wish to elaborate or edit that statement.

One of the many reasons it doesn't work is that if you torture someone for long enough and "correctly" enough, you can get them to do or say whatever you want. Most POW's that are brought in for this kind of questioning are already under suspicion of something, so the bias is already there for the information you're seeking. There would be no way to tell if the information you extracted out of your prisoner is viable until it's too late.

As a side note: Could you imagine what it would be like to be one of these torturers? All the sheer brutal force that compounds your day has to leave major league emotional scars on you. Forever.

EDIT: Muslims? Seriously? Please tell me you aren't that stupid...

I don't know what an insurgeon is. Perhaps you mean "insurgent", and that word isn't exclusive to terrorism so it doesn't really apply either. The dictionary is your friend and can make you mercifully smarter.

Etc. meaning Christians, blacks, mexicans, gays, druggies, metalheads, cartoonists, democrats, liberals, midgets, and scientologists?

Thats basically what you just said. I'm going to be really anal about your post and show you how wrong you are.

Prisoners can be American citizens put into jail for DUI, theft, or disorderly conduct. Do they deserve to be tortured for a mistake they made in the past? I assume by prisoners you mean detainees in other countries. These people are protected by the constitution, under the right to a fair trial. They are also protected by international law known as the Geneva convention, which makes torture a war crime.

Terrorists in the modern sense has been expanded by American propaganda immensely. A Iraqi civilian in the wrong place at the wrong time, will be detained without a trial and without any regard to their well being. They will be tortured for their ethnicity. In most cases the terrorists are already dead. Suicide bombers are undetainable. If they were just "bombers" then we would be detaining terrorists. We have "suspected" terrorists because the real ones are, as previously stated, dead.

Muslims should be tortured? How about all Christians and Catholics get tortured. Makes perfect sense.

It doesn't matter. They can not be tortured no matter what they have done. Geneva convention. Constitution. More than just pieces of paper.

Mortarion, you really need to stop posting. You're a grade A moron.

I feel that torture, although brutal and super heavy metal, is wrong.
I'm sure that they can find other ways to extract information from people, like mind**** type of ****. Confuse them, make them mentally unprepared, lower their guard, etc. These terrorist ****ers or whatever... They are probably trained to resist torture methods, just as i am sure that our marines are also trained.

Although they are jerks and yea we want to kill those bastards etc etc etc,
I dont think that we need to take our race back to the dark ages, I believe that there has got to be other, more advanced ways of extracting information.

Do you have anything else to add?????
Any reasoning behind why you feel this way???

Or is this just another one of your spammy posts to ruin the flow of the debate forum?

MOST people are actually trying to contribute to a healthy debate and exchange of ideas here, and you just keep adding in your little moronic and useless tidbits. That is why people hate you and are giving you negarep.

Can you please take a break today, and come back tomorrow. You're on time-out.

"Mind****" can also be considered a different form of torture. I think any type of torture is never appropriate to use on people except for terrorists and people like that due to their destructive mentality. When dealing with those people the end always justifies the means.

I don't give two shits about rep. What I do care about is having a debate with someone who isn't talking out of their ass. The purpose of this entire thing is to actually think about what you want to say. If you don't want to do that, there's the Off Topic thread.

This assumes you have the correct terrorists to begin with. A large number of detainees in Gitmo haven't even been charged with a crime.

As it were, the uses are obvious, but the moral issues are too great to merit the potential benefits.

Torture is a sick way to get information. I'm sure we could use other ways to get information. Bill Cosby could interrogate the prisoners. He's pretty intimidating

Those terrorists say the darndest things.

After that poor excuse for a joke I will continue with what I think personally. Torture is a hard subject to say, because many of the extremists groups are trained with a mentality of honor. By betraying your group of extremists you essentially get a ticket to Hell. So it's not really an effective means of extracting information in that sense. In the U.S. it's a bit easier though. We aren't as built up on the 'Honor' system as they are. We would rat our friends out if it meant more pain to us. We are selfish people. I cannot say the same for other countries, because I have not experienced them myself, but I'm sure that Australia, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, should I continue? Are the same, they aren't extremists. That's about all I have to say for that, I'll leave it open to more debate before getting into more of this.

That's actually a good point. I guess I agree that sensory deprivation and other types of "Psychological torture" are more effective but I'm getting the sense that when dealing with terrorists that you're okay with all of this?

@Mortarion: You seriously need to think before posting, you're just rapidly firing out nonsense all over the board.
