Do you find the new debate forum a good or a bad idea? I'm sure you're thinking this alone is a matter of opinion, but there are completely logical reasons for both sides of the debate. Side A. Saying that it's a bad thing to have a debate forum: It's a bad idea because this will get users to create arguments amongst themselves & will get users banned for things (ofcourse not everyone reads the rules) such as -rep for something opinion based, flaming, spamming (though that one is deserving.), and other things as well...Mostly though, it can and will get users to argue about things they feel is the truth (a belief if you will) with someone who thinks otherwise. Side B. Saying that it's a good thing to have a debate forum: This cleans up the Off-topic/General Chat forums, and brings all those heated debates into one general area. It will also have a guideline system involved that will keep users (maybe) from going to far with their comments. It will also get users to cite more sources (considering the new, Cite your sources for +rep, rule), which is ALWAYS a good thing, because a lot of users don't even THINK about doing that, they just take what they have from memory and throw it out there, let me remind you people...Memory goes bad... Anyways...If you want to know how I feel about it, I feel the Debate Forum is both a bad thing and a good thing, I've explained my reasonings in the above...I'm just curious if there are people who feel strongly one way or the other... I'm now going to give some examples of how posts should look in these forums, please excuse my conceit. The only problem now is...only one or two people will read these posts, and their are still going to be people who neglect to cite sources, and speak logic in this forum... *Note, you can click the titles of each debate to view the entire debate or click the next to each quote to view its origin. Will the World End in 2012? Debate:
It's kind of funny yes, but it's a bit serious entity, i mean, this forum is here to stay for a while, and i'm curious what the people think prior to the full-swing opening/realization that its here.
i personally feel that if it is carefully moderated everything should be fine. if people make the decision to neg rep or flame based on opinion, then they should be prepared to suffer the conseq., besides, if they feel angry about someones opinion, then that just means they are afraid to hear what they truly believe but won't reveal. for example with these anti-gay marchs only take place because of insecurity to reveal inner feelings.
People are honestly taking it too seriously, seriously, take a look, almost every thread that isn't about some controversial issue gets locked. eg. Chocolate vs Vanilla, Halo1 vs 2 vs 3.
WTF!!!!!!???? A debate forum? lol lol lol lol rofl! But in some ways that is good because I usually come up with some controversial threads...
I think it's a bad idea. There's less than 10 people on this forum who i respect enough to even care to have a conversation with, let alone debate. I think that people are just going to end up getting warned and banned in here, and tons of -rep will be thrown around. The opinions of a bunch of 13-16 year olds are usually not something i care to hear.
Some of the things that have been discussed are good but I sincerely hope that pointless things arent posted here. Stupid things like, this or that. Those kind of debates belong in off topic. I love the debate forum, I just hope it doesnt become a place for people to give their unfairly bias opinions on pointless topics.
I think the purpose of the debate forum is so people can actually be serious in their debate and have it be actually responded to with a serious answer. The point is that here, unlike the discussion thread, you shouldn't be "loled" or told to shut up, because from this point on, this is where debates should take place, not out there.
I agree with Titmar, for the most part. Who wants to read a bunch of opinions from a bunch of kids who are probably ill-informed or ignorant in the first place? This forum is likely to erupt into flames and anger. However, if we all act responsibly, this forum could be the best one on the whole site. If people can treat each other with respect, agree to disagree sometimes, and post thoughtful and factual responses, this thing can be a success. We can all learn something new if are mature enough. It's up to us. EDIT: Forgot to remove mah sig.
I agree, a rule of the debate thread should be proper use of your lols. Just like the discussion forums where fail is a no-no. Edit: Almost forgot to remove my sig.
Too much non halo talk on this site as it was now you've given them free reign to flame each other on whatever topic tickles their hairy bits.
Yes but, there have been serious debate threads before, and mods got offended and started handing out infractions and closing threads.
Lol, maybe it was me, I don't remember. But I never gave out infractions unless insults were used, and they often were. Yes, I share your skepticism. But I also believe in the quote "you must be the change you wish to see in the world". Just because not everyone will act responsibly, doesn't give me the right to do it too. I will act responsibly because that is how I want others to act.
I like it so far. The debates where people have too much of a personal situation with the topic is where the problems are going to be. I kind of like just being able to go into a more serious mode and start posting in this area, instead of hopping around.
I agree with tit. I've had these on other forums and they always turn out badly because people tend to get pissed off and the whole thread becomes a giant un-interesting flame fest. This just promotes discussing things that people will get pissed about.
lol Bloody optimist. I'm with you in believing in that quote as well though it may not seem like it sometimes. However I don't expect people to change just because I act a certain way. It is possible yes but not likely to happen. I prefer not to get my hopes up, life gives me less disappointments that way.
I just love this cartoon, and everyone in this thread who is against this forum seems to think that it will never work out. It really depends on how it is moderated.
It’s good, but it’s a little scary, because it’s easy to break a rule, especially with what you want to debate about, it’s hard to tell what’s right or wrong. This thread is pretty close to just opinions, but it’s a good debate none the less. Then again, it’s probably a good thing. Tough rules=Smart people. Its fun having serious conversations if your brain can handle it.
