Hey man. I don't frequent these parts much anymore, but I know Salty and I assure you, he's not trying to be a ****. Your map at its current form will not make it to matchmaking, nor will it be a big hit in the community, which are the only two things you can really strive for in Forge. The issues range from pathways, line of sight, to visuals and other issues. I think at this point your best option is to shelve this map for now. Build a few smaller maps, hone your abilities and attempt to create a true competitive arena. This is the equivalent of learning to walk before you run. Hell, you can even revisit this map idea once you learn the basics of how Halo combat takes place within your geometry. This isn't a slight against you. If I knew about ForgeHub when Reach came out I'm sure the older heads on here would be giving me the same advice. Consider what Salty and I have said to you as some "tough love". All the best dude.
Ok thanks for the advice man. It has been almost 2 weeks since my last full WIP screenshots other than the one shot of the middle of the map. A lot of it has changed including the middle area of the map. I will post updated screenshots in a few hours. If y'all like the updates I'll finish the map up and if y'all don't I'll probably shelve the map for now and focus my work on Hotzone.
I suggest friending anyone still active in this thread and calling upon them when online to look and talk with you about your ideas and to show what you are working on and the thought behind it in actual forge. Dont be scared. This is the first step in becoming a god.(not that I'm there yet)
Yeah I could do that don't have anything to hide. Does everybody have the same gamertag as their forgehub username? My gamertag is LXM nadekil cuz I was vice president of a clan for a while
Got a shitload more updated screenshots of Apprehension. I tried to take y'alls feedback into account. Hope this is better:
A piece of advice for BTB terrain. It makes it much easier to see where you can go when your rock paths have terrain flats and or hills on them so they look like you're supposed to be on them. AKA put grass on those rocks if you want us on them. This is from experience.
@nadekill, i will show you the way, like a monk going into exile on a mountain top in search of truth and discipline, i will teach you the art of design!
While I see that you tried to add more to the map, you didn't address the main issue with the map in the first place. The most important part of any structure is it's foundation and frame. This also holds truth with multiplayer maps. If the foundation and frame is poor, no amount of added geometry will improve it. What you've done here is try to add geometry on top of a structure that has an extremely weak foundation and frame. The main issues with all of your BTB maps is that they are way to large in size. Waaaaayyyy to large. I would honestly stop trying to design BTB maps and focus on a small arena for 2v2 as @WeedCough suggested. You need to learn to walk before you can run. BTB design in general is an extremely unexplored design vein and we as a collective community have not even begun to scrape the surface of its true design potential. As far as I'm concerned nobody here has EVER designed an exceptional H5 BTB map. This is of course according to my own standards, which are admitidly quite extreme.
It’s pretty simple from here honestly. Don’t have a huge mountain in the middle when the rest of the map is wide open lol. So what happens when blue team posts up on the mountain and all of red teams vehicles are destroyed. All red team can do is hide in the base or try to run across the flat wide open terrain hoping the 4 palm trees are enough cover to survive. That’s something that’s pretty much common sense in forging with even small gameplay experience. That’s sort of Salty’s point. May sound like a douche but throwing trees on flatland and surrounding it with rocks isn’t a map. No offense.
Ok well Apprehension is playable at this point so I'm gonna probably add a few finishing touches and move on to my next map "Hot Zone". Hot Zone will be a much smaller map, most likely infection. It will be set in either a village or small town, and have more verticallity, and less open space. So far, I have just begun forging it, and I probably wont even have screenshots for at least a week or 2, but I took more time to really plan out the map and I feel like my design for Hot Zone is much better suited for Halo 5 gameplay.
I was actually going to say with possibly the exception of scavenger. Artistically it is by far the most impressive BTB map in H5 hands down and the gameplay fits the narrative of it's art. Mad respect goes out to @CommanderColson and all the other forgers + testers who aided In it's creation. That being said, I don't think it pushes any gameplay boundaries and thus doesn't push it over into the exceptional category imo.
It's a damn shame you rarely post your maps Salty. I've haven't seen a lot from you but I was always very impressed.
It is a shame, hopefully infinites population will be large enough to warrant the amount of time it takes to polish and release maps. The polish phase honestly takes upwards of 80% of the total time for the mapping process and with the amount of concepts I like to churn out I just don't have the time or motivation to do so for a dead game. Ive treated H5 as a learning process and growing process. I was really humbled by the new forge and I've learned so much from so many people.I absolutely cannot wait to apply that knowledge gained into a fully polished product once infinite rolls around. It's gonna be exciting times for all of us!
Sad to say, but I’ll probably only make 2 maps. Probably submit one of them to the inevitable forge contest we’ll have and then be completely overwhelmed by the amount of amazing talent that will bury my creations and I’ll give up. Just like Halo 5 lol
