Looking at that rugrats picture gives me nightmares of sales reps giving me shitty images and then not charging the customer an art charge even though even though I have to rebuild the entire image.
@WARHOLIC Can we get larger files sizes? Capturing in 4k and trying to upload here is a task. Gotta future proof the hub.
Just upload the pictures to Imgur and link them, man. Hardly anyone has got 4K monitors for their PCs anyway, so why even bother? I rescale my One X pictures to 1080p, too. 4K pictures take up to 10MB (PNG) of server memory, have longer loading times, put more stress on servers, are downscaled into the basic Forgehub thread size anyway (have to click to enlarge, which nobody ever does) 1080p pictures only take up a quarter of that, have shorter loading times, still have a good a widely accepted colour fidelty and resolution, still contain the most important visual information Larger files obviously take up more server memory, ergo more servers/servers with higher memory capabilities are needed. iirc War is solely paying the servers for FH and as of late FNH, so to me your suggestion seems a bit short-sighted. Don't mean to be a ****.
It would still be nice to have even if it is not the most crucial addition. I don't see any harm in asking for an addition like that, after all the answer is always no if you never ask. I do not see the short sightedness of just asking for a feature. A lot of times it is just annoying to have to resize or change the file type of the image for forgehub, it is more of a convienence thing than anything else (at least for me), forgehub automatically resizing or converting images to jpeg would be fine too. The issue is that I can not even upload a 1080p png without having to adjust it or change the format. At the very least a file size increase to 4mb would make things far less annoying. You either have to change your capture settings or spend time converting/downsizing images to upload them. Is it needed? No, but it would make it a lot less annoying to use and would be a great quality of life improvement. Uploading straight to forgehub instead of either editing the image or uploading and linking to imgur would be great.
Oh, don't get me wrong, asking is great and all, but the last part seemed a bit pushy for asking someone to basically put more money into a service that is free of charge for you. Of course it would be nice (except for the longer loading times). Like you said it yourself, it's not worth it at the moment. How many daily viewers are there on FH? 50+-? A straight conversion to JPEG would help a lot, but such a feature needs a lot of work to implement. Another thing where you ask yourself, if it's worth the costs.
Come to think of it your right. To really future proof the site 8k file sizes would be optimal. Considering in the next few years 8k will be the new hardware standard. With modern internet speeds, even slower speeds of 100mbs could load any 4k image with in an instant. As of now this 2mb cap on images is on the edge of being obsolete and is a partial contributing factor to why more maps are being shared on Discord today then FH. I've been on this site since 2008 less then a month after it was made and I'm extremely grateful to @WARHOLIC for keeping up and running but I also care about the sites integrity and would not like to see it held back by small file sizes.
It will be a long time before 8k is a standard, especially since its at 60hz, once real 144hz displays/gaming comes to the average consumer and console gamer (which is very soon and somewhat now) they will want that way more than 8k. Im most excited for 1440p 240hz coming around the corner, 4k 144hz is here now but the displays are insanely priced ($2000). Id argue that 4k will be the standard (for media) in probrobly 3-5 years, you can buy a pretty decent 4k non hdr panel for $200 now although its 60hz., compare that to a few years ago where it would cost a fortune. Edit- I think 4k 60fps will be the standard in a few years for everything but TV, which will probrobly opt for an interlaced resolution for 4k (3840x2160i) and use 1440p 60fps for sports related broadcasts which is what id predict. probrobly not very accurate but I think it will be somewhat similar in the end. Edit 2- I was wrong Seems ATSC 3.0 goes straight to high res, high framerate https://www.cnet.com/news/atsc-3-0-the-future-of-free-antenna-tv-is-coming-eventually/
favicon? The little logo on the site? There is a chrome extension that forces one where you just add your own like this- https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bookmark-favicon-changer/acmfnomgphggonodopogfbmkneepfgnh Kind of a pain in the ass though, the broken favicon is annoying.
Agreed Disagree. Just because everyone isn't running out to buy $500+ 4k monitors doesn't mean they don't have their PC hooked up to a much larger yet similarly priced 4K TV. Personally I've been running that setup for 2+ years now and since I'm a best value for the money guy you can bet there are plenty of others that are doing the same. Everyone attempting to post PNG's, Tiff's and Raws in a forum, Dolores Umbridge would like to speak to you. (geekiest thing I could think of) Agreed Two problems with this thinking, Firstly the service is pointless if you don't try to keep reasonably current, and B) it costs time not money to make these kinds of updates. (unless you're made of money, then spend away) If I was going to run a web page with locally hosted images (old Reach pages are a prime example of why you host your own images) I would absolutely set up a server side image optimizer. It's easier for users and it would make a dramatic difference to my image storage space thus reducing my expenses. I'm not sure how well it works or if it is compatible with the FH's version of Xenforo but there is this: https://xenforo.com/community/resources/convert-image-all.2527/ Also I think it is only set to be run in the background in set intervals as apposed to converting on upload. Anyway, even if it isn't perfect I just mean to show there are existing ways to do this stuff. It's just a matter of allocating the time to track it down. This all being said, although mildly annoying the act of optimizing and or resizing our own images is rather trivial.
For anyone interested I will be starting a new live Forge series detailing on making a multiplayer map from absolute nothing to full release. I will leave a link for those who might be interested in the series and want more info. Hope to see you there.https://www.forgehub.com/threads/level-design-w-seth.158569/
Looks sick but those bright vines tho I'd say replace them with the darker brown, more root looking vines
