Listen I'm a Halo 3 fanboy, but there is NO way you can tell me H3's aiming is easier to pick up than H5's. Like, we're comparing the H3 BR to the H5 Pistol here, you realize that right?

They both have bad aiming but H5 is literally the worst I've ever seen in an FPS by a mile. It's on par with Goldeneye and Pokemon Snap

Curious about this. Was the gameplay too simple? Game types? Something else?

There has been enormous complexity added to Halo since then. What sort of complexity were you envisioning that hasn’t occurred?

    1-2-3 in that order, 5, Reach, 4.

If anyone debates me I'll make a map dedicated to their hubris

I just want subtle things. i had no issues with halo 3 at the time. But nower days, I would expect something a little extra. maybe a little increase in base movement speed, maybe some sort of thruster that gradually increases speed and allows you to still shoot in any direction, still feeling very much like halo 3. no need for sprint.

I'm not sure how much you know about field of view, but that's the main factor that makes Halo 3 feel slow. In reality, base movement isn't notably slower, but it feels quite a bit slower because of the narrower field of view. A field of view of around 90-100 would likely solve the issue of it feeling slow. Here's a good demonstration of the impact it has (for reference, I believe H3 is around a 55 degree FOV):

This is why I've been advocating for a wider field of view for about the last decade, lol. No reason to add gimmicks to make the game feel faster when you can just widen the field of view and accomplish the same thing without ruining the way the game plays. I'm sure a lot of it is resulting from the increased graphical fidelity, and the fact that the hardware hasn't advanced at a fast enough rate to keep up with it, which means they need to reduce the amount of polygons that are visible on the screen at any given time, which means that we have shitty FOV's. Graphics are overrated, especially in an FPS. Wish someone making an FPS game would recognize that and prioritize correctly.

I have no issue with that, i would like a version of halo 3 that speeds up the gameplay, with whatever mechanic that may be. gears of war is a slow moving game but you can use cover mechanics for little boosts of speed while still being able to be completely offensive. its subtle but adds an extra dimension to the gameplay.

It kind of makes sense though, and I think his perspective is shared by a LOT of people.

We're all on Planet Earth which is spinning at an exceptional speed all the time, but to us it feels like we're not moving at all. What Ryan is describing about his experience in Halo is something similar. I probably shouldn't generalize, but I think that most people that like the abilities in the newer games like them because they FEEL like they're moving faster. The actual abilities themselves are ultimately not that important to them. It's the FEELING of speed and action that's important.

Creating an experience that feels fast IS important in a modern Halo game, because it's important to a large section of the player base. I personally have no issue whatsoever with the desire to feel as if you're moving around like a superhero. There are ways to do that while retaining the core gameplay that Halo was founded on.

The feeling of speed combined with the core gameplay would be like a marriage made in heaven to me. It's totally doable too. Increasing FOV is one way to create that feeling, but it's not the only way. Something as simple as adjusting animations can get the job done. If it looks like Master Chief is running, a lot of players will feel like they're moving faster, even if they're not. Motion blur is another technique that can create that feeling without drastically impacting gameplay. I'm sure there are many other ways also.

If you were responding to his comments on GOW, you can disregard everything I just said. I've never played it, so I don't know if he's said something stupid. :p

Yeah I was referring to his gears comment and other things. Wanted more complexity to Halo, etc. Lol

i never explain myself well. All im really saying is halo 3 is great but it needs to find new ways to evolve and still retrain that greatness. no one wants to keep playing the same game year after year but they also dont want abominations like reach, 4 and 5. Im not saying my suggestions are right, just stuff I would experiment with. They could definitly be awful ideas.

I'll gladly play a non-**** game for years and years and years...and years and years, and then some more years. I still have several games that are 10-20 years old that I return to over and over again. I'm definitely an exception though, and I recognize that.

I think a game can stay fresh for a VERY long time, assuming there's some additional content (maps, gametypes) released along the way. Hell, there are games that thrive for many, many years with essentially zero new content (Counter Strike is a good example).

The idea that games need to 'evolve' is a misnomer, in my estimation. Games don't need to evolve. They need to have a core concept that never stops being 'fun' to it player base. Evolving very often only alienates a player base. Halo is in a bit of a sticky position though, in that if it returns to its roots it's going to alienate a portion of the current player base, and if it continues down the current path, it risks losing a portion of the player base that is only sticking around because they love what the game used to be.

Anyway, I'm not really trying to discount what you're saying. Just typing out some thoughts that came to mind upon reading your post.

Obviously there are exceptions. Also I dont want big changes were it alienates players. I want small gradual changes so that by the time we are on halo 10 we potentially have a game that is vastly superior to halo 3. If 343 keep vastly changing halo, they will always take the chance of screwing it up even more. Take what works and slowly expand on it with each game iteration. That way if you make something worse, its easy to identify the problem. My advice is to just redo halo 3, remove the clunkiness and add a little something extra to spice things up and see how it goes.

    Halo CE for 2v2s
    Halo 3 for BTB
Halo Reach for Invasion and Anniversary
Halo 4 for one playlist, Castle + Crimson
    Halo 5 for Forge

Not a fan of Halo 2 multiplayer at all. Everyone else has already listed the pros and cons of the games so I'm not going to make a novel.

Overall though I think I probably enjoyed Halo 3 BTB the most. Nothing beat late nights with a full lobby in back to back 15 minute objective games.

I largely prefer CE's button combos compared to H2's.

They are more quality of life button combo's besides the double melee, but double melees are actually kind of difficult to insta-gib people with in that game.

You have no idea how much time I spent trying to master the rocket jump to sniper balcony on that map. I have a hard time picking favorites in that game. I can say Hang'em High pisses me off the most to play because of the 6 gillion randoms on the map. Also, it is really interesting how Derelict looks like a generic donut but plays more like a less vertical Construct.
