I'm considering trying to design and build an easily deconstructable Home Theater wall. Basically the sitch is that I have a projector setup that I would like to improve the looks of, while blocking a door that I cannot lock or replace due to it being a reasonably short term rental. I am also not allowed to put any holes in the walls. The screen is a 4x8 piece of melamine that had the backside modified into a simple but elegant ping pong table, so it needs to be relatively easy to pull from the enclosure when the pong is requested. Due to the door handle I couldn't make this flush to the wall. Concidering the size of the room and the desire to hide a few wires I decided to indent a spot were I could place a home audio stand. What I need is any ideas on how to make this stable and easy to setup and tear down at an extremely budget price. - - - No, I mean cheaper than that. The rough dimensions you're looking at here are 6' H x 8'4" W x 4" D, The Base is 8" which I know is small but I was thinking I would create a kind of quarter inch wedge or rubber padded foot that would gently press the unit into the wall for stability. Most likely with a half a dozen soft pads to keep the wall safe. Here's a quick mock up of what I have so far. (ignore the block seems they are irrelevant)
really neat that you did this in forge. But you should definitely also post this to: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/index.php
I actually think I have an account there but I figure there is enough creativity here to get the job done.
Im thinking foldable pieces, a drawstring screen that feeds along the units walls/zippers into the unit walls to stay taut, and snappable foamish buffer pieces that can be put anywhere along the outside of the unit to go along with any obtrusive door handles you may encounter. Aside from the screen, everything should fit inside a moderately sized *briefcase. Edit: suitcase
I'm not a businessman on the go, I just need something cheap that isn't a nightmare to take apart. Think more like a very simple spartan wood bedframe. Also the screen is a 4'x8' chunk of melamine. Not really something that can be held up and together by foamies. I'll give you bonus points for thinking outside the box - - or is it inside the briefcase.
I just meant size wise all of the foldable pieces (which would be the sturdy wooden pieces) could fit in a briefcase (or under a bed very easily for your home setup). I've seen entire cabinets put together with this method and it blew my mind so I would have no way of knowing how to uphold the structural integrity of your melamine. Glad you got a giggle out of the superspy aspects of it
@MythicFritz Table saw and a drill/screw driver. Since the screen needs to pop out for ping pong I was thinking of putting a 2" x 2" x 8' cut of wood at the base of the screen and cut a groove in it for the screen to rest in, either that or a few pieces of metal to do the same thing then I just need something subtle at the top to hold it in place. I was also thinking I could just make the two lower 2x2 pieces as removeable panels. I might be able do something simple that latches them in place. The tough part is keeping it all together and sturdy while making it relatively easy to take apart.
True, I could always permanently affix one side of the Velcro to the beam but even the best glue backing they use is not a huge fan of wood. If I'm going to put screws in the panels to more reliably fasten the Velcro I'm not sure if there's much of a benefit using it in the first place. It's an interesting idea. If I managed to acquire something with a more manufactured backing it may still be an option.
