I know, impossible OK, but what constitutes the word 'MAP'? Geometry? Gameplay? Balance? 'Fun'? SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Gamertag Co-Forgers (If Applicable) Map Name Link To Download ForgeHub Map Page Link Screenshot of the Map Maps should be designed to be played with slightly modified HCS settings. This ensures that players will be familiar with the settings when maps are being used for tournament play after the contest is complete. HCS Modifications: - Radar is disabled - Assault Rifle removed as starting weapon Please note that the assault rifle is not entirely banned and can be used as a pickup weapon on your map. JUDGING RUBRIC DESIGN (Layout, Creativity, Theme) ART (Lighting, Aesthetics, Atmosphere) GAMEPLAY (Balance, Spawns, Fun Encounters) All three categories are rated on a scale from 1 - 5 1 (Broken), 2 (Poor), 3 (Acceptable), 4 (Great), 5 (Outstanding) JUDGING TIMELINE Phase 1 The judges will play each map 2 times and give a rating. Each map will have a totaled rating from each judge. The averages of all the judges' scores for the first wave will be calculated and maps below a rating of 9 will be eliminated. Phase 2 Maps will be played 3-5 times once again. Averages will then be calculated again. Maps that receive a rating below 12 will then be eliminated Phase 3 Finalists will consist of only 12-15 ratings. At this stage judges will use critical thinking and more stress testing to determine the three winners Phases will not be completed until all judges have given ratings to each map. Here are the rules. No mention of judges having the right to change spawns, balance, or gameplay elements. What are we judging? understanding of 'level design', 'halo level design', 'halo 5 level design', 'gameplay design', or some mix of these? The rules seem to say that it's 'maps designed for modified HCS settings, i.e. 'the Halo 5 HCS gametype and the attached sandbox'. This implies that the judges will be taking into account ALL aspects of the sandbox that compliment the design of the submitted map. Meaning the judges are also judging based on how the presented sanbox and map compliment the game settings. Meaning, that the map, weaponset, pickups submitted are the ones being judged. But what is a 'fun encounter'? This is vague and stupid language to have in any contest, especially a design one, because 'fun' is subjective, and designers might find something more fun than the judges - weapons are a big part of what makes for a 'fun' encounter. If a designer decides to put a needlerXbinary on their map with a sawXspnkr, maybe they think it is 'fun', and therefore the language in the rules of the competition feeds this kind of subjectivity = many salt when its all said and done, because the judges found something else fun. Of course, we all know the weapon sandbox is bullshit, and there is seemingly no way to get around this other than on a case by case basis. I am generally against handicaps in contests, because some people may get an advantage that they would otherwise not deserve, and AS IT IS, this contest ALLOWS FOR NO HANDICAP PRIOR TO ASSESSING A SCORE, or at least doesn't inform competitors that this might happen. As it is, the contest bylaws require these elements to be judged as is when the map is submitted. I am also against vague things like 'fun' (for whom, and how?) being judged, and again, the CONTEST ALLOWS FOR THIS. And so, frankly, if the rules stay the way they are, the only time changing any elements of a submitted map should help are AFTER THE COMPETITION is concluded, or after a round of judging is completed. So, if there is a disclaimer that informs the competitors that judges reserve the right to change some elements of the gameplay and balance to account for the infuriatingly broken nature of the game we are designing for, then we should be making sure this is clearly explained in the rules, and that there is no vague language that might allow for justifiable and annoying saltiness before and after the competition. On a personal note, I think that the maps should be judged in the way they were submitted, even though I realize Halo 5 is making us all lose braincells here. If the map is broken and the weapons suck, in its final draft (what this means has to be specified in the rules as well) then that is reflective of the mind that has designed it, and the map should not go forward. That said, I think that after each round of judging, in addition to 'performance' tuning, there should be allowances for 'gameplay/balance/weapon' tuning, based on feedback from the judges - this way, the best maps are the ones getting the advantage, and allows the designers some say in whether or not to heed the judges' advice - it could be that not changing anything might make your map better in the next round, compared to potential changes that are made by other contenders.
I say as a judge to the other judges let's just honor rule not to use the weapons that would of been deketed thus not be changing the maps. Then when we decide the winners and everyone freaks out over what we chose having this or that on it, they can't complain cause we didn't change ****.
That's literally the same thing and what would've happened anyways lmao. Whatever, everything will be live streamed and I'm more than confident we'll handle everything fine.
Hi people I have two maps that I was hoping someone could help me play test. They are called Beacon Tower and Hold Fast. The goal is for them to be two vs two playable. If you can help please message me on xbox live. Gamer tag ONI777777
Just started a weapon that may or may not be a part of my game that totally doesn't rip off the Halo sandbox at all: I promise the final won't be ***** pink lol This gun actually use a clip. It reloads with essentially an upside down M1 Garand mechanism with a far greater capacity
I think the judges, having already been vetted and selected as judges, should be given free reign to judge the maps based on their own instinct and opinions. The grading criteria should be there to help facilitate communication about what is or isn't working, or why they don't like the map, but ultimately their opinion of the map will be formed by their impression of it as a whole, not based on a score in a specific category. If your map sucks in general, then you don't need to worry about weapons being altered because it will already suck as a whole. If your map has great potential but the plasma rifle respawns too fast, and simply fixing that will make the map the best version of what it can be, then let the judges play that version of the map. The entire point of this site is for people to share what they build in forge, get feedback on what is and isn't working, and improve their designs over time. The only thing that would be unfair is if the judges give certain forgers the opportunity to make adjustments and to not offer that to other forgers...At some point we just have trust that they aren't going to do that.
The game, both on xbox, and in H5Forge for PC, sometimes reverts the gametype between matches. It may even look like you have your custom gametype selected, but to verify and to be absolutely sure, manually pick the gametype from "My Files" again. it doesn't do this terribly often in my experience.. GL!
If you fail to find people on short notice there are also testing lobbies who can play it for you. They stream and they have written feedback. You can also participate if you want ofcourse. Find their threads on the halo discussion forum. Pictures are also very welcome here so people can see what you have.
Or do what I do, which is load up something stupid that everyone loves, bait randoms to join your lobby, and then when that match is over, switch to your map and hpe they stay. If so, they like it, if not, they don't. It is also good to get feedback from randoms and skilled forgers alike, so this works out fairly well. it also promotes your map to the masses, and that way it will actually get played and not merely bookmarked
listen judges I need you guys to judge HOW I WANT!!!!! my opinions are just as relevant as yours even though i wasnt selected as a judge HEAR ME ROAR!!
Not really an opinion where everyone wants it judged in a different way. It's simple, judge the maps without altering them. It does not say anywhere on the contest thread that the judges have a right to do that. With that said, if they want to then go with Seth's post. Put that **** on the thread and follow it. I think everyone just wants consistency.
Hey Waywo. I made a thread about a project I want feedback on. Here's link https://www.forgehub.com/threads/new-level-design-steam-video-ideas.156835/
I just dont believe in someone else going on your map and making any changes, so im not going to bother investing time into making anything for the contest. Not like i'd finish anything anyway since framedrops would disqualify me instantly. Not my fault Forge cant render 1100 blocks, but nah, lets change weapons to give good designs a chance.
