This. How about just naming community favorite winners just that and have contest winners and regular features be the map features. Think it's kind of weird to have two different distinctions in the first place, but if we're going to have them, at least make them distinct lol.
Yeah, I know. Hopefully nobody gets upset by me saying this, but if I recall correctly there was a pretty extensive debate amongst staff at one point over how to handle Community Favorites Winners. It mostly centered around whether the staff should have total say over what maps get featured. There was some concern about the quality of Community Favorites Winners being perceived (by staff) as being significantly lower than the quality of the Staff picked Features. At the same time, we felt it was important to recognize the maps voted on by the community in a more significant way. Ultimately, it was decided that Community Favorites winners would be promoted to 'Featured Map' status, but they wouldn't receive the same attention that a 'Map Feature' would. We felt it would give the Comm Favs winners a bit more recognition than they had previously (where the maps would be stickied in the Maps forum for a month), while also allowing 'Map Features' to continue to be a bit more exclusive and special, with a thorough write-up and Front Page Feature. This shift in approach happened like 3 years ago I think, so it's certainly not new. I guess there was just never an official explanation about this? (I don't even remember if there was, or not.) It wasn't meant to be a big secret or anything though. --- Double Post Merged, Sep 9, 2017 --- I'm not one to have anything against symmetrical maps. I think this one would benefit enormously from some asymmetry though, and it would be really easy to implement. I know that's vague feedback. It's just the first time in a while that I've looked at a symmetrical design and felt immediately that it should be asymmetrical. Gut feeling, I guess. It could result in much more varied elevations and lines of sight.
there are 4 categories staff picked map features with articles contest maps maps in matchmaking community voted maps so why are they all in one category when they're all completely different things? you guys always want to make things ambiguous
--- Double Post Merged, Sep 9, 2017 --- I'd think it'd be easy enough to add an overlay that explains how it got to be a featured map. Something similar to how it says 'New' at the top of Dojo right now.
Damnit, Chunk. I'd like to hear your thoughts after running on it, though. One thing about overlap, is it makes it really hard to get a feel for the layout from pictures.
Expanding upon this and assuming a system like this could be put in place, what do you guys think about replacing the "newest/featured/most downloaded" tabs with a drop down search function? You'd be able to do such things as: search by Gametype, weapons, tags, etc. Filter by newest, category, featured, matchmaking, etc. As far as the labels go, would it make more sense to have a full word like "featured" in the top corner, or symbols that would differentiate between each label that take up less room but require a key (provided somewhere obvious on the map home page)?
I think that symbols would be the best option so that multiple could easily fit in the corner of the card in the maps section, especially considering a map can be in all 4 categories at once.
Got some more pics of this WIP. Kinda started building off the top off my head... the flow will probably be a bit weird at first but the encounters should kick ass. Speed boost over a death pit... in order to do something fast, you have to be able to do it well slow. that's not a euphemism I'm just saying if you try thrusting to the speed boost you'll miss and die Looking like this will be one of the cooler, more acrobatic atriums of the map... lots of verticality going on here that's kinda hard to perceive in the picture. Also, thoughts on the dying star? I was playing around a little bit and it seems like it might be a cool power weapon with just 1 clip. MIGHT!! Also remember wip These pillars with the energy beams are grav lifts laid out such that you bounce from the bottom right to the top one. You can obviously thrust away at any point and if done right you can get some cool movement opportunities from it... hope this adds a lot to replayibility. Anyways, it's coming along. Slowly @school @thatdamnhurricane Oh and I need a name preferrably latin-ish that us gringo 'Muricans can pronounce easily
