It's very, very possible to design around Spartan charge. Plenty of things you can do to make it difficult to utilize.
Like rounding your corners. Like having windows or any sort of sight line that lets the player see the enemy ahead of time for prediction. Like forcing jumps that break sprint speed to kill charge. Like not designing tiny labyrinths with 90s everywhere. Like any sort vertical overlap that wouldn't allow them to charge at you. I have faith in you.
Fair enough, but even with all those changes in mind it's still very easy to build enough momentum to charge in CQC. I definitely agree that it limits those engagements, but I feel like it certainly does not factor them out. It's just an unnecessary nuisance.
Just a small question, when you say "Maps made before the date of this announcement are eligible to win if never posted on ForgeHub", are you able to re-visit said posted map, update and change it? Or would that be considered making a remake of the original map? If not, is it possible to update the map posted on ForgeHub, to the current version, and will it then be eligible to enter?
It's more of an honor rule. If you're just barely tweaking an existing map, itll be frowned upon. If you're actually changing it substantially you'll be fine.
Alrighty, thanks for clearing this up, because I am giving one of my maps a complete overhaul in the overall design, the way it plays and the sight lines on it.
Blaze has agreed to be our replacement judge! Here's the updated judge panel list: - SoldatDuChrist - MultiLockOn - No God Anywhere - Blaze
Please welcome @Blaze to be our 4th judge for this Forge contest. Really happy he was able to step up to the plate and help out at the last minute.
Copying this discussion over to this thread, since it seems like a more appropriate place for it. I don't think any weapon or powerup should be automatically excluded from 1v1's. Even something like Rockets can work. Obviously I wouldn't want to play a bunch of 1v1 maps that have Rockets on them, and it's not something I'd recommend. I've played lots and lots of 1v1 maps that had all of the weapons people are advocating against, and they all can and do work in a 1v1 setting. There's such a thing as overkill for sure, and people need to be especially aware of it in this game, but it's just not true that none of these weapons can work well in 1v1's. There's nothing wrong with getting 1 or 2 kills as a result of obtaining a pickup. There's also no such thing as a 'guaranteed kill'. If someone picks up OS, you should know it. You should be able to position yourself so there's a possibility of putting damage on them in spurts. If you're facing a person with OS straight up in a pistol fight, you dun goofed somewhere along the line, and you deserve to die. If people are bum rushing OS simultaneously, it's either because they haven't thought far enough ahead, or because the placement (or level design around it) is shitty. Typically in 1v1's, obtaining pickups is the reward for gaining an advantage over your opponent. There's nothing wrong with this, as long as that advantage doesn't make the match unwinnable for the other person. And even then, I'd have to blame the design, weapons placement, or ammo count for that. There are perfectly reasonable ways of using nearly everything in the sandbox.
Is the reason maps are not up because of weapon tweaking? Maps in their current state besides like Storm and Arcanum have some pretty bs weapons.
Which is why I'm not telling anyone to do anything. I'm always opened to being convinced that something can work, but let me entertain the conversation. If challenging the OS with a pistol is a mistake (as you put it) then youre going to need a weapon to melt it. Things like plasma pistols and plasma rifles seem like good counters until the OS is long gone and youre still getting noob combo'd off every spawn. The OS in a 1v1 is as much of a guaranteed kill as there's ever been in Halo. Especially considering we're not even using the AR secondary to melt it. But hell, if people can have some level design tricks to make it work I'm all for it. But I'd be willing to wager it won't happen and we'll end up with some really bad snowballing. I'll stand by my camo statement. For one player to be invisible in a 1v1 match is stupid idea in a hundred different ways. I don't want to see it on any map, it's just bad. Don't do it. It's dumb.
1v1 to me is about cool fights, and we should eliminate things that are not fair to fight against. In my opinion: Railgun because it's impossible to miss Snipers with Damage Boost because it's OHK Binary Rifle for the same reason SAW and SMG because they're just OP Assault Rifles Sword, Shotgun, and Hammer because they encourage players to camp Storm Rifle because it's broken Incineration Cannon because it's OP Fuel Rod Cannon and Plasma Caster because they encourage spamming Plasma Pistol because noob combo Needler because it's the Needler Camo because one player being invisible for 40 seconds is lame Speedboost because it makes your Spartan Charge even stronger Battle Rifle and DMR are just easier to use upgrades over the pistol with no specific utility beyond more aim assist at range. I'd rather see a damage boost on the map. I think these pickups work depending on the map and their placement (in no particular order): Damage Boost Overshield Sentinel Beam Grenade Launcher Assault Rifle Brute Plasma Rifle Supressor Boltshot Hydra Launcher Carbine Light Rifle Sniper Rifle Beam Rifle Rocket Launcher Scattershot Spartan Laser Again, what you use here will largely depend on the map. For example, a Carbine is too powerful on a map with a lot of sightlines because then you're just getting pinged by the guy constantly; but put it on a map that is mostly short to medium ranges and now the Carbine player has to be really good with it to find success. Or they'll stick to the longer ranges and play more predictably.
I think the brute plasma rifle is even better than the storm rifle, you can't miss with the grenade launcher even if you try, and scattershot is literally just a slightly worse shotgun, people will still be encouraged to camp I just noticed you have beam rifle listed as okay are you insane haha it's even easier to use than the sniper and has twice the fire rate
I'm gong to build on this and say I don't find any of those weapons outside the light rifle and damage boost fun to fight against. An argument could be made for the hydra.
Beam Rifle is fine with low ammo. The difference in aim assist between it and the regular sniper is negligible The other 3 are fine on larger maps. --- Double Post Merged, Aug 29, 2017 --- Well "fun" is an ambiguous term. The correct word would be "fair". The weapons I omitted are not fair in any situation in my opinion, but the others can work depending on the map. I also don't think "easy to use" means anything when it comes to putting a weapon on your map. The only thing that's not easy to use in this game is the Pistol.
low ammo means nothing. unfair is unfair also, there is no map large enough to make the grenade launcher and brute plasma rifle not complete bullshit well, maybe you could make a map that big, but then it would be the size of a btb map and the pistol would become absolutely useless and I still don't get how a shotgun isn't okay but a scattershot is. They're basically the same thing
Brute Plasma Rifle is a shield stripper that doesn't aim for you or get kills as quickly as all the other shield strippers on its own. I think that's a unique niche and it should be treated as a more valuable pick up. And I hope there are larger 1v1 maps being made. Everything I've seen feels like an exterm map and none of these pickups are going to work at that size.
3 brute plasma bullets + melee/1 pistol shot is a kill, which is much faster than any other "cqb" weapon other than the plasma pistol also, I don't know what game you've been playing but the brute plasma rifle has a **** ton of bullet mag
What weapons do you think are fine for 1v1 then? And again, i think aim assist is irrelevant. The entire game aims for you (until you strip shields and windmill over headshots) so i don't see the point in considering those values on their own. I only said I don't like the DMR/BR compared to the Pistol because they do nothing other than have more aim assist and range; you fight with them the exact same way as you fight with the Pistol.
