Forcing people to start forging their maps after the contest start date feels clunky to me because people can just prefab any previous map over to a new canvas after the start date. I think it would be foolish to assume people will be starting from scratch anyway.

Tru, most forgers are going to have multiple projects on the side that would benefit them, but I have faith that the judges will be able to spot these fairly easily considering everyone that would attempt this likely already showed their work to someone else.

Regardless, some people are going to have a head start. At least the start date will kill some of their available time changing over said prefabs and covering their tracks

I don't care if you start your map now or a year ago. As long as it's not posted.

    Seriously it shouldn't matter.

You can prevent snowballing by not putting stupid weapons on your map.

Which honestly comes down to every weapon in H5

Glad you guys ended up choosing to keep the judge panel on the smaller side. It will be really beneficial to running the lobbies efficiently since you can essentially swap out and exchange judges when playtesting to get more diversity with your opponents play style. Obviously you're free to come up with any judging system you want but what I've done in the past was conduct a verbal pass or fail system based on votes from all judges until we reached final voting rounds. Once we composed a top 20 or top 10 list we started to apply numerical values to our choices so that everyone is able to voice their opinion without being heavily influenced to comply to something they would rather pass on. Everyone should be entitled to their own opinion and having conversations together during the judging process will keep the panel informed if any serious issues are found regarding balance, performance, containment, and so on.

We've created a Trello board for you guys based on our previous Extermination contest. I think being organized is a great way to keep this process moving in a way that allows the community to follow along. Over the years, we've learned that the community loves transparency in almost every portion of this process so we chose to make our board 'public' and even streamed our playtest / judging sessions when we could. For many of you, if not all, this is the first Forge contest you will be judging so I'm not sure if you're comfortable with being open and transparent during the entire process. Obviously, that will be up to you so please discuss among yourselves.

Here is the link to the current Trello board for reference: https://trello.com/b/wOYlvriL/forgehub-1v1

Feel free to make changes as you see fit, this is what worked for us and hopefully this level of organization benefits you guys as well. In regards to applying point values to final testing rounds, we've done this a bit differently depending on the contest. Here's what we did with the Extermination contest:

When judges have narrowed all possible entries to a top 20 list, judges proceed in applying point values to each map so that we could generate a top 10 list which we would conduct further gameplay analysis on with a representative from 343.

After long discussions about the positive and negative attributes of each map, judges were asked to place the maps in 4 categories, each applying different point values to the maps. We also provided our selections to a neutral 3rd party as not to intimidate people from voicing their own opinion or to heavily dictate how others should feel regarding their preferences. Once all of the judges submitted their opinions to this 3rd party we composed an excel chart tallying the results to generate our final top 10 map list.

You can use this as inspiration or you can adopt something similar, obviously the number of submissions will dictate how you proceed so perhaps you may want to decide on what method you use at a later point in time. Remember, these are just suggestions.

I know you were explaining how the extermination contest went, but I feel the need to say just in case: Please don't make 343 a part of this.

It always strikes me as ironic how close 'apart' and 'a part' are in spelling, and how far away they are in meaning. Thank you for using it correctly. ;)

Speaking of DQs, what are the rules for disqualification? I know you can't publish the map, but what about posting pics and making it public for customs?

Why not publish it? Or do you mean publish it before the official thread?

    When's the startingpoint anyway?
