Seeing as the done/WIP option wouldn't work maybe give forgers the option to put there map as open to reviews or closed to reviews. Also when a forger updates a map reviews may be removed or something as they may longer be relevant. Or even the reviewer could be informed of the changes and asked to edit their review of they wish to show what they think of the changes. This would not only discourage irrelevant updates but keep map reviews up to date.
I don't see why I should bother. First of all, I don't understand how the current review system works. What's in it for me? If I take the time to review someone's map, they get a free review, but what do I get in return?
Hmm. A rising tide raises all ships. I hope your response is a little sarcastic otherwise my response would be "are you twelve?"
I'm not being sarcastic. You want people to provide a service, right? Then you should be thinking of ways to make it worth their while.
The reward is the maps being better. If you leave a review of a restaurant you've been to, do they give you a reward?
They made you a map. Is that not worthwhile to you? You don't like playing maps? Hi. This is forgehub. We make maps here. Welcome.
It all depends upon what you're overall goal is. There ARE benefits. Assessing various aspects of a map requires and facilitates learning, which improves your own projects. What you say may help another forger learn something knew, or YOU may learn something from them if they provide a counter point to yours. If you demonstrate that you're knowledgeable about forging, forge maps, level design, scripting, game design, etc., people will notice that and want to see what YOU make. The people who's maps you review are exponentially more likely to review your maps in the future (assuming your reviews are constructive). Interacting with others who share the same passion as you opens doors. Most maps submitted by well known forgers are the product of collaboration with other forgers. Many times there's not even a direct involvement, but something another forger said months ago may end up playing a large role in shaping a project. Just like virtually everyone else, I started out as an unknown. I submitted maps that received zero reviews, zero comments, and zero downloads. The primary way I started getting 'known' was by leaving extensive, detailed feedback on peoples maps. I'd always highlight strengths, AND areas I felt could be improved, being sure to offer practical suggestions. Without the interactions that happened as a result, I'd have a fraction of the knowledge I do, and be a fraction of the designer I am. The value I received from reviewing other peoples maps is really immeasurable.
I know you don't want to hear it. But if a map has made it to Forgehub, then I can probably download it anytime I want. If I like the map, there's nothing stopping me from downloading it and making the improvements myself.
The dude is saying there's no point to leaving reviews unless there's a reward. That's stupid, you leave a review so that you can contribute and they can grow. The second you create a reward system is when people start spamming half ass reviews to get rewarded. You gonna scold me now and take away my books or what. --- Double Post Merged, Jul 9, 2017 --- I've actually done this before as well. Nothing wrong with making some tweaks that will improve something as long as you're not passing it off as your own.
Okay there are some good points. But there are lots of different ways to learn. And I am not personally interested in building a reputation.
True. That's also not what he's saying. Now who's stupid? If your feelings are hurt, think about it. Moderators?
I wasn't either. It was a byproduct of my desire to learn. I had a very strong drive to learn. At that time, there wasn't much written about level design in Halo. I clearly knew less than other people, so I knew I needed to interact with them, get to know them (if only through forums) well enough to solicit their feedback and soak up their knowledge. At the beginning I knew I didn't know what I was talking about (lol), so I risked saying something idiotic and looking like a fool, but it didn't matter because even if someone called me out, I knew I would still learn something from it. I respect the fact that you don't care about building a reputation. Anything gained from a desire to be known will be worthless, because it means that your own worth is dependent upon others. Something of worth won't come from a feeling of worthlessness. Knowledge comes from curiosity. If learning is what drives you, take every opportunity to learn. Sometimes that means moving out of your comfort zone (I know it did for me).
"don't see why I should bother. First of all, I don't understand how the current review system works. What's in it for me? If I take the time to review someone's map, they get a free review, but what do I get in return?" Did you lose your bifocals or was reading comprehension not taught in school when you attended.
Was thinking about some of the feedback today and how rottentomatoes allows its users to choose between two options, "want to see" and "not interested". A quick review like this might be more engaging for people since users won't be encumbered with all of the requirements behind a standard map review. Users can click the 'approve' or 'needs work' buttons without being forced to provide any more information. What do you think?
I like the idea of a "highly recommended" option. The second you implement two choices like that, either being good or bad, everything that doesn't have the good review looks like ****. So even if the map is decent 4/5 or 7/10 it would get the "needs work"button and fall in line with every other map. I am all for having a "Highly recommend" and leaving it at that. Also, can we please get a rep system like Beyond
This thread exists so we can improve the system. Personally, I don't leave reviews unless they're great for basically the reasons multi said. You shouldn't be rewarded for leaving a review, I agree that's stupid. If I'm going to be honest, I don't want scrubs to leave reviews no my maps anyway, because they prob don't understand the design. I don't believe a new account review should hold as much merit as a veteran anyway. Even some vets don't know what they're saying honestly. But that's what this thread is for. Improvements. I like the idea, just not the wording, cause he's right, that'll mean basically every map is either good or bad. Popularity system for both maps and users would be great.
