So, I recently dropped a new map, and in my struggle to think of one, wondered if there were any particular naming schemes y'all like to follow/how you decide on a name for your maps. For example, I like to use religious words for Covenant stuff, and long, elegant names for forerunner maps.
I usually name it after what it is supposed to represent. If it's all original, think of a word that is relevant to the map's look or function.
You're doing it all wrong. You pick the map name first and then build a map from what the name creates.
My cat whispers the map names in my ear while i sleep. I wake up, can't remember them because i was sleeping, then grab whatever the 2nd or 3rd degree of separation is of the map's main feature from thesaurus.com.
Hereafter is a good name. It's too bad that some scrub took it and never finished the map, so now it's just floating out there in the void. One of these days I'm going to just take it like I took Storm Peaks.
my big project, which I've set on the backburner for a while so that I can work on some things that aren't as enormous of a task to cmplete, is a Star Trek map, with lots of sliding doors and a working engine core, where two opposing teams try to take over the ship, essentially. Anyone want credit for coming up with the name for this? Hint: I don't want it to just be "That Star Trek map this one guy made" LOL
I usually build maps in groups so the group typically has a naming scheme. I had a group of Forerunner maps with a Greek Mythology naming scheme so they were named Moros, Ares and Poseidon. My Vex themed maps are inspired by creatures that control time, hence Chronology, Gatelord and Timeframe. If the map isn't part of a group, the name is always relevant to the theme. Ex. Nautilus is an underwater map and the creature it's named after is a sea animal. I also have a tendency to do combo words (Raijin Break, Gatelord, Dust Palace, Timeframe, The Glow, Dreamscape, Soulrift, etc)
I named a Covenant themed map Devotion, because their ships sometimes have those awesome names. A few days later I found out on a halowiki page that there actually was a Covie vessel called Devotion in the fleet of Particular Justice or something. It's whereabouts are unknown is the only thing I remember. I hope to be original but usually go for the obvious. I always use the searchbar on the homepage to check first though. If I see the same name I drop it. Port Coral - A sea fortress. Cirrus - Forerunner map in the sky. Jaguar - Mayan overgrown temples. Celestial - Map on a frozen moon. Exhibition - A modern art museum. Like I said, pretty obvious.
I don't see why not. It's not like you're known for having original ideas. There's no forge law stating that you can't use a preexisting map name unless it's already in matchmaking, but it'd be pretty shitty to use that name - one of a map I've already shared publicly several times - when you're part of the reason I stopped working on it. In the unlikely event it ever gets released, I fully plan to keep its name.
It's been in waywo several times and Multi probably showed it to you before. But whatevs Forge is dad, Halo 5 sucks, 343's gay etc etc
I don't care what name maps have... Just don't use a "phrase" or more than two words.(with acceptions) Or put "the" in its title. Shouldn't bother me, but it does.
