I know most of the posts in here aren't serious, but I think forgers are overly negative about 'donut maps'. They produce a very distinctive style of gameplay, but can still work really well when done right. Forgers just have this thing about not liking map styles that have been used excessively, or are deemed as unoriginal. The problem isn't necessarily that donut maps are bad. It's more a matter of the fact that a lot of the people that build them are pretty inexperienced in forge and level design, and don't know how to make an interesting donut. It's a problem of the specific designs being bad rather than the general design style being bad, and I think sometimes people lose sight of that.

The problem with a donut isn't that you run around in a circle, which can be said of virtually every single map. The problem with a donut is when you can sit in the middle and spin around in a circle watching people spawn on the outsides. With this game's awful spawn system, that's no bueno.

As you suggest, that's just as much the fault of the spawn system as it is of the fault of the map design style. I really don't think this spawn system makes it impossible to have a good donut map in this game though. It just requires a design that allows spawners enough options. A linear donut map that only allows players to go right or left on one plane is going to suck. Spawners needs to movement options to multiple elevations, with some of them having restricted lines of sight. Regret suffers from some instances of poor scaling, spacing, and lines of sight, but is probably closest to getting it right in H5.
