AceOfSpades submitted a new map: Aerocrest - Remake of the Halo 3 map by Rorak Kuroda and Vyctoriouz Read more about this map...
Had a quick look through and would like to suggest a few adjustments. 1. I would remove the teleporters. Having put so much effort into the layout and aesthetics, the teleporters will be used way too often. The players won't feel like taking the long stairs to get to the higher grounds. 2. MORE FLAGS! This one large flag at the side of a castle really adds to the atmosphere so maybe consider adding a few more around the map? 3. The top mid section of the map is a little open and bland. A few crates here and there to add a bit of cover maybe? Also the lighting could be improved in that area. Whilst there are torches on the wall, add some invisible lights to bring the interior to life. 4. This is a rather small nitpick but for the grenade launcher position, could it be moved to where the cylinder is? It may just be my OCD kicking in, but there's something off with where it's placed. It's just a nitpick haha. - Overall, this is one of the best [If not] THE best castle maps I've seen so far. It definitely gives the Eichenwalde vibe from Overwatch. Pop me a message if you decide to add some of these suggestions and I'll play test a few times.
1) No 2) Um. 3) NO 4) nah Aesthetics aside, This map holds up as much as it could from the original in 2009
1. The teleporters were and still are an integral part of how the design plays out. They're not going anywhere. 2. If framerate allows it, I might be adding more aesthetic details throughout the map, including another flag or two. I was starting to get framerate drops while flying around the map, so I'm leery to add too many more details. Currently right around 1100 objects, so I'm right on that cusp. 3. Not about to just add lazy cover, though I have purposefully left out one wall piece from the original at top mid. I feel like there's not much some here and there cover would really add to the gameplay of the map, probably just slow it down. Not something I want. 4. The original had a sword in the same position the grenade launcher is. Tried the sword out and did not care for how it played in Halo 5 on this map. The power weapon position next to the stairs was kind of a defining feature of the map in Halo 3, so I'm sticking with that position. Basically, I'm not really looking to make any design changes to the map, as my intention was to replicate the gameplay of the original as much as possible. Appreciate the feedback though. I'm really glad you think it emulates Eichenwalde, because that's precisely the feel I was going for.
Glad you read thought it! If any changes are done to this map give me a shout as I'd love to feature it. Whilst I know it's a remake, don't be afraid to try new things. Like you said Halo 5 mechanics are different so it might bring something new to the map! Whilst it's already beautiful, it can still become better
Correct, but the changes suggested are without warrant. If you haven't played the map, don't suggest changes that alter gameplay. The teleports are crucial in circulation, and adding crates is never a good idea. It's lazy cover, which diminishes gameplay, and provides "ring-around-the-rosey" encounters. Overall, it's just a silly suggestion, especially without understanding how the map plays. Or the original for that matter. Any artistic suggestions are fine, but there is no reason to judge the design based on a quick look through, or for that matter, even a few play tests. Always remember, if you are critiquing a map, you need to understand it.
LOL he made the map in another Halo game too and has played the original from Halo 3 as well as this iteration.
Not only this but if you're going to add cover on a castle map at least suggest something midevil themed like some balistas you can take cover behind or perhaps a battle torn area with some makeshift cover, instead of.....Crates? In most cases you want to redesign rather than add cover, and like others have said it defeats the purpose of a remake, at that point its a re-imagination.
Hey I just posted your map on Rorak Kuroda's Facebook page. I'm interested to see his reaction, you did such a remarkable job recreating his map. Anyone would be honored to see people remaking their work even though they left the Forge community. I miss Rorak now...
Love the back to back core features!! More please! Seen this map around, looks neat. I'll have to check it out
Except I can distinctly remember Given, Multi, Vyctoriouz, and Kuroda along with myself playing this map plenty of times throughout the life of Halo 3 because it was regarded one of the best custom designs in the games, and was frequently used during custom game sessions. There's a difference between a "high horse" and wisdom.
