I feel like I'm talking to two year olds on this, steeling is bad. Stealing maps is also, still bad. Or did yall not learn that in ****in elementary school?
Still waiting for you to provide an instance when someone has claimed that they made someone else's map.
I never said that anyone did, that doesn't suddenly make stealing maps okay just because it hasn't happened yet.
We never said anyone in this thread did, just that people do. That's why I don't see the point in this thread. If anything you're all just picking sides for no reason.
just because you vandalize a statue before you steal it doesn't change the fact that you stole it. Just because you made some changes to a map before you post it without crediting the original author doesn't make not stealing either. Hell, even if you don't post it, even if you keep it just for yourself and nobody ever sees that version of it, it is still stolen.
I disagree with this completely. This is exactly the reason I've been engaging in this discussion. I'm not disagreeing that stealing is bad. I'm disagreeing with what people consider stealing. I honestly don't even know how to respond to this definition of stealing because it seems so unreasonable to me.
Someone already stole and reused a map from me, with my non-prefab assets still in it. I'm flattered.
just like @a Chunk said, this kind of thinking is part of what got me to make this post. According to this way of thinking, if someone says "hey grab some of these free cookies on the table" and I grab some free cookies and then I put some sauce on top of them, and then I say to my friends, "if you want you can have one of these cookies," I have now stolen said cookies. Or if I buy a car and put an aftermarket muffler on it, now I've stolen a car. I'm sorry but I just can't I agree with this point of view.
I'm sorry but those examples of stealing or not-stealing in the real world are so bad. You guys are funny. Taking credit for a map you didn't built yourself is stealing and bad. I agree. But that's about it for me. Prefapping other people's junk is just as bad as you want it to be
https://janefriedman.com/idea-theft/ My take on this whole debate is summed up pretty well in this blog post. It's about writing, not Forging, but the comparison holds. Pay special attention to the Creative Commons philosophy at the end of the post. By leaving files open Forge is adopting this mindset, and it's a good thing.
Okay, I should probably weigh in on this since I'm pretty sure I was the one that started it. First off, prefabs were never even a discussion point in my case because this happened far before we had access to the prefab system. I love prefabs and I'm 100% in support of the new system. i have no idea how the prefab system got mixed up in this so I simply won't speak on it. But map stealing? Its not great. Just for a little background information: a few days ago I posted on the waywo and told everyone about my map Freakshow being stolen/repurposed without my knowledge. The forger saved over my map, used my assets and claimed it as his own. This is new info I just found out yesterday, but he posted it on twitter as his own map. Now we can look at this situation in two ways: legally and morally. Legally, he did nothing wrong. I have no copyrights. Freakshow belongs to Microsoft, 343 and the Halo community. I know that, and Im sure most people arguing that map stealing is wrong know that as well. Morally though? Its a pretty shitty thing to do. It isn't some backstabbing "you killed my brother" moment, but it is a ****-ish move. I spent a long time on that map. Building, testing, polishing. It was my first map to get a feature or even gain traction in the community. So to see some bizarro stolen version of it in the content browser wasn't great. Especially because it does not have something like "Original Creator: WeedCough" in it. But was I mad? Of course not. Its forge, I do this to relax, not stress out about plagiarism. I posted about it on the waywo because I was curious if anyone had heard of this forger, or even if anyone else had their maps stolen by him or someone like him. People seemed to think I was stressing out or really mad about it, I guess i have trouble getting my tone across correctly online. It really wasn't a huge deal lol. I reported his file because it took two seconds and kinda made me feel better at the time. One of the things that initially drove me to finally become a member of forgehub was aspect of sharing my art with the community, and I stand by that today. Hell, Im a filmmaker, so I am all about creative collaborations. I brought up the example in the waywo thread about the forger who reached out to me about creating a racetrack within the gates of freakshow. When he did this I was excited as hell and happy he actually took the time to ask. No one is arguing that legally he should ask. It comes down to respect. Respect for your fellow forgers and fellow creatives, who just like you take time and effort creating this stuff. just my two cents.
Think of this as plagiarism, not so much stealing. It removes credibility from the person using your ideas. If you put your material out there, people can and will take it/change it. It CAN be harmful. In any situation, it just so happens that my situation, was that a CC took my map, made horrible additions, lights, and added framerate, and proceeded to show it to 343 because that CC thought it was better. I was outraged. It discredited ME. not the person borrowing my map. Then my map was disqualified from MM. Is there a connection? I think so. Tread lightly.
