It was highly underrated. I loved Mario Kart just as much as anyone else, but I really love Diddy Kong Racing. One of the great things about it is the facet that there were Go-Karts, Hovercrafts, and Planes. So each level could play differently and it added more variety. I still play it on my original (modded) Xbox from time to time. I would be so happy if it got a console remake!
