Seeing influences from old school game philosophies implemented into halo 5 is always nice. It's nostalgic, intruiging, and presents an uncanny spin on the new gameplay mechanics that we've grown used to in the previous years.

And that's being generous. Moving on i want to adress the issues that come along with this sort of map philosophy, more specificaly how it can hinder design progress in new directions.

I don't feel it's neccesary to point out the issues with applying old design formulas to new games, just like it's not neccesary to explain how new design formulas wouldn't work with old games. It's all too obvious that playing quake on H5's Colesium wouldn't be the best idea.

I want to instead encourage those of you who are stuck in the past, to branch out and instead introduce somthing fresh to the scene. Somthing we are extremely malnurished of at the moment. Leading by example will help the community adapt new technuiqes and design philosophies. We could use your skills in other, more desperate areas.

Notice this is not an attempt to discredit the validity of ones own preference. I want to encourage the community to move in a direction that i think will be most fruitfull. 343 have their eyes on us, but they need to play it safe. That leaves us with the burden to inovate, so please lets lead by example

I don't know how many lobbies I've run with people complaining about the halo movement mechanics or weapon power instead of giving actual feedback based on Halo 5. And no I will not play on (or give feedback on a map going off of) older Halo settings unless it becomes a thing 343 wants to push.

The ATN lobby puts you in a unique position of having a TON of maps to test, and with an eye towards matchmaking, it makes sense to not test something that won't happen. Also, I agree that feedback of the sort: "This map would be better without sprint" is worse than useless.

Still, don't some forgers deserve the chance to test not just the map but the sandbox as well? A big part of the custom games settings are tweaking all the little levers, and recapturing the feel of classic halo is very much something people are interested in.

As someone who seems to be forging exclusively Breakout and script-based maps this time around, I'm definitely all for exploring new frontiers. But, more towards the point of the thread, I think that learning from and incorporating mechanics and elements from past games is healthy for the series. We don't need to discard old ideas just because they're old, and the ability of a forger to bring someone else's design style in her own creation demonstrates a skill as a level designer that I wish I had more of.

So I guess... there's a lot of Forgers all over, why can't we have both?

In my case, i'm not commenting on custom games, testing lobbies etc. Although i think i mostly agree with duke.

But i'm not saying we can't have both, i'm expressing a desire for new formulas. We already have remakes, old school type maps, and even decent maps that blend well with the new halo 5 mechanics. I want to see new maps that push the bar of what we are used to. We have a wide range of talented forgers, some of which i don't see break out of there comfort zone/ what is socialy acceptable.

Map remakes, and H2br starts... That's it. All other settings left intact

People should test away if they want but I don't think it does anyone any good when people are complaining about sprint, ground pound, Spartan charge, weapon pad usage, or X weapons being too powerful in Halo 5. Those are the settings we play with in this game and that's how I personally test maps on. Now if someone wants to try something different and creative I welcome it but it should be playable by a provided, not customized, game type. There are exceptions for mini games and what not but I don't tend to test those. Trying to make halo 5 into halo 3 is just not helpful in my opinion. Like it or hate it, by taking movement and weapon power, etc. as is, you should use those to sculpt how you build a core map.

Now on that point, I am willing to test some new game modes that may not be in Halo such as oddball, KOTH (of it become possible), warpath potentially, etc. it's more of the Spartan abilities/weapons abilities that I think people trying to change being detrimental

When i first read the article i'm pretty sure this was the case. Now if there was no sprint, spartan abilities etc, i think that would be a better idea. Still, remakes don't have to be tested, they just have to be 1:1 and look realy good
