How does one go about properly scaling a remake from Halo 3 to Halo 5? I mean I want to make the gameplay as accurate as possible, and I know there are differences between the base speed and base weapons of each game.
tl;dr of what everyone will say: You can't because... -Halo 5's utility weapon has less range -Halo 5's movement is faster So if you upscale for the movement it makes the utility weapon's range seem more pitiful, and if you downscale for the range then the movement will seem waaaaay too fast.
Neither did Halo 3. It's just that all of the other weapons sucked in Halo 3, so it resulted in a tolerable balance. Not sure if this will produce the result you're looking for, but it may be helpful. http://www.forgehub.com/threads/valhalla-remake-a-look-into-my-build-process.150271/
I personally think remixes fit Halo 5 wayyy better than any direct remake could for reasons already stated. so basically... MIX IT UP!
If you want it accurate, you can either stopwatch time the walking distance of each area in a map like some people do. I prefer to use a default placed hill marker in the older games, two controllers for split screen and write down the length, width and heights on the map from that one hill. Remakes take dedication to do accurately. Unless you are up to the task of Basically being OCD, watching pro videos for lines of site they used and jumps it may not end up the same. I am curious what map you would be thinking of? I just finished a forerunner variant of midship using measurements for a lot of it. I think a re-skinned old map is much more fun to do with the proper measurements of the original map. Here is an old video of it as I need to do new video and screenshots. http://xboxdvr.com/gamer/Fame28/video/17977386
That midship remake looks fresh. Alright everyone, thanks for the replies. I'll figure something out.
This. If you use some type of forge object to measure the distances what you'll end up with is a remake that is exactly to scale as the original. If you're planning to pair the map with a "classic" gametype with movement speeds that mimic H3 then by all means this is the best way to go. However, if you want the map to be more accessible and not require a gametype then the stopwatch method is the best way to go. This is my preferred method.
I couldn't agree with this more! All the maps have already been made... A few times. A remix is so much more fun, like I hate Viking in the BTB playlist, not that it isn't great, but rather the fact that I've played the same map for a decade. A remix is heavily inspired by the original, but with a new feel and new twists, so you have that good vibe of the original, but have fun with the new changes. A great example of this is Weeeeemann's "Artifact" map, which is a remix of Relic from Halo 2. It has a variation of the main structure, the elevated sniper tower, the portal and the downed pelican, but it also has all new terrain, some caves, small islands, and a lot of fitting trees for good sight lines.
