What do you guys think of the beta so far? Personally, it is hard to feel the game out when all you can play is domination/strongholds. I really wish it had taken ideas from other RTS games. More specifically, Command & Conquer. C&C has almost infinitely more potential for strategy, which is the whole concept behind RTS games... I want to spread my buildings out, build walls, turrets, and construct mini bases wherever! I'm mainly referencing C&C because I have the most experience in it compared to other titles. True base customization, is the deal breaker to me. It seems that if I want to spend my resources on fortifying my base like crazy, I should be able to. The same goes for if I want to spend all my resources on a grand army and rush the enemy base right away. It is a flexible game, yet Halo Wars seems much more stiff than I was expecting for a second title. Overall, domination mode seems fine and all, but I want to play a straight up conquer mode where I have to destroy my enemy completely to achieve victory. I don't see that being possible in HW2 because of the lack of strategy involved... It seems like the most shallow RTS game available! From what I can gather about a slayer mode, would be that you are constantly spawning soldiers and vehicles and sending them out to die, and the bigger army wins. There doesn't seem to be ANY strategy, just rushing out units to battle.
It is definitely worth a try, but the beta is very restricted. I will say the commander mode options seem fairly successful, and intuitive. My day 1 game is Tiberian Sun, and it makes Halo Wars look like butt (functionally speaking) and it released in 1999.
Reminds me of Battle for Middle Earth to some extent, which isn't a bad thing. That game was fun, if not overly strategic.
I find it to be quite slow-paced. Before being a console kid, I played Starcraft 2 almost exclusively. So I was quite excited to try out Halo Wars 2. I went in the game with expectations that it's gameplay will be similar to SC's with constant counter attacks, switching between macro and micro, early harassment, etc. But from the couple games I've played, it's mainly just rushing your armies to the different objectives. I don't think my base got attacked even once. I guess it would be difficult though to have it like SC since that was a PC game and it's easier to play an RTS with a keyboard and mouse. Still, Halo Wars 2 is pretty fun and I can see myself buying the game.
Played one match and I think I'll wait for a PC beta. The framerate is awful, input lag very noticeable and I forgot how slow using a controller for an RTS is.
