AN OPEN LETTER FROM FORGEHUB REGARDING THE 2V2 CONTEST

As the owner of ForgeHub and the creator of the 2v2 Throwdown Map Contest, I'd like to apologize for the recent events that have come to our attention regarding the perceived mis-management of this contest and would like to address all of the concerns raised with as much transparency as possible.

    WHAT HAPPENED?
During testing for the 2v2 Throwdown Map Contest, improper testing conditions were applied to the map 'Orxgens', which was forged and submitted by thefro3po. As will be shown later in the article, this was totally unintentional. The judging panel had every intention of applying fair and equal testing conditions to all of the maps that were entered into the contest. Unfortunately, in the case of Orxgens, the version of the map that was tested had been updated after the submission deadline.

    HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Once the submission deadline had passed, all of the submitted maps were saved via 'bookmarks', which meant that updates could be applied to a map file after it had been saved. Furthermore, if a bookmarked map file was deleted by the forger, the bookmark would be rendered 'Invalid'. With no intention of wrongdoing, the combination of these circumstances lead us into our current predicament.

WHY DIDN'T WE SAVE THE MAPS LOCALLY?
    - With 145 map submissions and 100 local storage slots, we were unable to 'locally' save all of maps onto a single profile.
    - The convenience of being able to 'bookmark' all 145 maps onto a single profile seemed more attractive from a logistical perspective, as saving maps locally would have added a considerable amount of time to the process.

Despite reasoning that seemed logical at the time, we recognize that this was a poor decision.
All of the issues we encountered would have been prevented if we had properly saved all of the map files 'locally'. For this, we are deeply sorry. This will not happen again in future contests.

WAS 'ORXGENS' MODIFIED PAST THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE?
Yes, Orxgens was modified after the submission deadline.
Without any intention of wrongdoing, the map used during testing was modified past the submission deadline by the original author. Due to maps being saved via 'bookmarks', all updates applied by the author automatically transferred over to the version we collected. The author updated the map after the deadline in an attempt to address feedback that was posted on his map page which, you can read below.

Before the Submission Deadline (Midnight of March 1st)

The following feedback was posted on the Map Thread for Orxgens:
"I fixed your lighting issues to an extent" - purely fat (March 1)
"I think you should take the Railgun off a weapon pad and drop spawn it. That many shots is going to break the map in Doubles. I'd also suggest you reduce the amount of lights on your map because you have framerate drops, most noticeably in the space area." - A 3 Legged Goat (March 1)

    After the Submission Deadline

The following changes were made to the map by the author, and addressed within the Map Thread:
"I ended up changing the Rail to three shots, I don't like taking the weapons off of the pads, but not being able to change the amount of ammo is quite the downfall for sure" - thefro3po (March 2)
"Just deleted a massive amount of lights and re-positioned others." - thefro3po (March 5)

WAS THERE EVER A VERSION OF ORXGENS PLAYED THAT WAS MODIFIED BY THE JUDGES?
Yes. Please read on for the explanation.

The version of the map that was used during contest testing all the way until the finalists (Top 5) had been solidified was NOT modified by the judges. All modifications and alterations were made by the original author of the map. We've searched through Game History on Waypoint to verify this.

March 2nd (the day after the submission deadline)
    - There was an unofficial playtest on Orxgens (Waypoint Link). Note that if you look at the top left corner of the map image, it says 'PARALLAX'. As will become evident with the subsequent links, maps show up this way after they've been deleted by the original author.

    March 7th
    - First judging session occurs (Unfortunately, for some reason the Game History on Waypoint is unavailable for a stretch of days in March (Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C, Exhibit D), so there's no record of our first official judging session for Orxgens.

    More Tests on Orxgens
    March 18th - Waypoint Link
    March 24th - Waypoint Link
    March 25th - Waypoint Link
    March 27th - Waypoint Link
    March 28th - Waypoint Link
    March 29th - Waypoint Link
    March 30th - Waypoint Link

As can be seen by looking at the top left corner of the map picture in each link, the map being used was last updated by thefro3po. The judges did not make any alterations to the map during contest testing. Testing concluded when we reached a top 5 decision on March 30th. One more note regarding this - click This Link for proof that the Game History shows the last person to modify a map as the author (Matclan shows as the author of this map, which was originally forged by Shifty).

BUT I THOUGHT YOU SAID THE JUDGES PLAYED ON A VERSION OF THE MAP THEY HAD MODIFIED?
After Orxgens reached a finalist position (Top 5), I was responsible for preparing maps for the 2v2 playlist. We made an alternate version of the map with the Camo and OS placed on Weapon Pads, and found that it played better with those adjustments. I handed in the final selection of maps to 343 with the adjustment I noted above shortly afterwards.

I had to make adjustments to all of the 2v2 maps to properly hand them off to 343. Maps that go in matchmaking must undergo a series of refinement checks to ensure that the general population will have the best experience possible. That requires a full inspection of the map including other changes such as player containment, name location volumes, decals and other aesthetic touches for player orientation. The changes made to the 2v2 maps in no way impacted their placement in the Throwdown Map Contest.

    March 1
    - map submissions due midnight
    - Goat recommended to update lighting and railgun (dropspawn) fro3po's map page
    - Match with aPK and Warholic (midnight) - Orxgens (unofficial playtest, not all judges present)

    March 2
    - Chunk bookmarks all 2v2 maps
    - Railgun changed on map by author

    March 5
    - Lighting updated on map by author

    March 7
    - First judging session occurs

    March 30
    - Prepared 10 maps for matchmaking, fine tuning and other necessary adjustments made
    - Top 5 maps established
    - Alternative version of Orxgens with Weapon Pads tested - Waypoint Link

    March 31
    - Maps sent to 343 for playlist

    THE VERDICT
Since the version of Orxgens used in testing sessions was modified by the author after the submission deadline, we have no choice but to disqualify it from the Map Contest. On behalf of all the judges, we wish to express our sincerest apologies to thefro3po for our failure to properly save your map. We're embarrassed and disappointed at our own lack of foresight, and deeply saddened by the fact that it's resulted in this disqualification.

I like maps that feel like actual spaces. I'm an art guy and I personally value strong art direction.

Design is a science that you can learn, and while some people have natural aptitude for it, it's more grounded in quantifiable facts and data relative to the nature of the game, therefore it has a more obvious ceiling. Whereas something like art direction is based in creativity, ingenuity and expression, and is therefore boundless (until you run into framerate). The personality of the designer shines through and I appreciate the people who go the extra mile in this area.

But at the end of the day, most of us are building "Core" maps to actually play in the game. Now that Forge is as powerful as it is, we no longer have to put Gameplay ahead of Art Direction. THEY ARE EQUALS!

This poor community is absolutely cancerous. I mean, I've scoffed at people saying things like that in the past, but wow. rip Halo for real

I'm pretty blunt so I am sure my initial dispute with your claim seemed aggressive but from past experience dealing with this type of ****. When
you don't offer constructive argument back to me. I will call you out. I know how this **** goes and I called it someone got banned. Deservedly, because nothing constructive was offered. I still believe nothing I said was untrue and reading everything that followed just proves my point more. I was told I should apologize. I shouldn't need to apologize for trying to prevent ignorance. I will however apologize for calling you rot. My personal experience with people who have taken this position and responded in a similar way is why you received such a response. Also, art is important but just like a beautiful women they eventually need more to them than being attractive.

Thanks. While it definitely appears that we have our differences based on a single thread's worth of interaction, I suspect that overall we agree more than we disagree.

My apologies for not being clear. Conflict and communication breakdown is inevitable between creative people in all fields, because we so often tend to express ourselves without the use of words.

I suspected that some of the wrath thrown my way was caused by others before me who may have held a similar, yet not my exact opinion.

I did not initially respond directly to your posts because I do not engage in debates with people while they are still hot-headed or "triggered" as you put it. However, I believe I stated my position more thoroughly afterwards. If you still find yourself in opposition to me, that's fine so long as you respect my opinion as one that exists within the Halo community. Some enjoy the game as more of a sport, and some enjoy it in a more laid back fashion. I see no reason for there to be a battle between these two factions.

Whatever opinion any of us may hold, or whatever group we might find ourselves in, no one gets to say that Halo is "our" game. That is the epitome of arrogance and elitism, and the nurturing of it has potential to destroy community.

On the contrary. If you're a fan of Halo post Halo 3, Halo is not your game. And you're part of the issue.

I've been a fan of every game since CE back in college. I could just as easily say that you are part of a "problem" because you may view the game differently than I do.

But, I won't. Because I don't consider an alternate viewpoint of a video game a problem.

There is absolutely no reason anyone should be at odds with anyone else about this until someone decides that the game as a whole should be experienced "their way" only, and all others be damned.

If factions within a given community put up walls, they are destined to starve. Obviously this has happened within the Halo community many times, and I'd hate to see it happen here.

Alternate view points aren't the problem. Bad view points are the problem.

In a game like Halo where small details can make or break the entire experience (ie bloom / h3 br spread) you can very much have the wrong opinion when it comes to game design.

If you think Halo 5 is headed in the right direction, you have the wrong opinion.

      just my https://www.google.com/search?q=2+c...UIBygB&biw=1920&bih=979#imgrc=uLFWVskWwprkaM:

I can't tell how late to the party I am, as I've only briefly glanced through this fun house of a comment section, but as someone who use to care ONLY about aesthetics, I must disagree. Anyone who knows me knows I'm really big on making things 'pretty' and that mindset practically crippled anything I made throughout Halo 3 to most of H2A game play wise. For a long time I didn't care about what was known as 'competitive design' because whenever I would load up one of these recommended competitive maps, all I would find are a bunch of cleanly placed blocks, most of the time featuring no actual theme other than 'cleanly forged.' Yawn. Boring. I immediately dictated it as a 'bad map' however I had no idea what I was talking about at the time.

Do maps that feature full aesthetic themes often offer better visual immersion then maps that are made up of cleanly forged geometry? Duh. If I'm playing on a well made farm, I'm gonna feel like I'm on a farm, but If I'm playing on a map that's made up of expertly placed blocks that play into the game play through the careful measurements in geometry... well, I'm still just playing on a bunch of blocks. Visually. And that's the thing. In my opinion, visual immersion and gameplay immersion can be two very different things, and like how millions have stated before me, getting them to blend is ideal.

Referencing Purley's example, lets say we have 2 girls walking down the street. Girl A is smoking Hollywood hot, however has little to no personality, is a gold digger, and hasn't seen Star wars. Girl B is... well, she's not the type of girl you're going to see getting a job in a Victoria's secret commercial- but she's kind, thoughtful, and would actually care about what you have to say.

Guess what- Girl B is better. Even if she's not as 'hot', she's more memorable and will provide an overall better experience then the Girl A, because similar to forge maps, gameplay is more important than aesthetics.

Striking a balance between Girl A and B, (allow me to introduce Girl C) one who is caring and thoughtful but also beautiful and visually stunning is obviously the best of both worlds and who we all fantasize to find, similar to the maps that can play well and look great. However, even if a map doesn't look great visually, if it's gameplay is stellar then it is simply a better map that an aesthetic map that harbors a slew of gameplay errors. Why do we keep looking back on games from the past with nostalgia? The graphics were crap! I wasn't immersed in Halo 2's Zanzibar! No way in hell did it look 'real'. But it played well, therefore I enjoyed my time there, therefore it became memorable, and therefore the map's true beauty came out, because the content of the product will always out way the visuals.

Just like girls, or any human being, you have to look past how something 'looks' in order to be able to see the true beauty within. Same applies to forge maps.

The discussion is cool, but let's please refrain from attacking people with one preference or another. In the end, all of us have fun manipulating pixels on a screen, and no one is a problem if they like it one way or another.

      Jesus christ that comparison lol
