Since Chris Nolan has been brought up, I'd like to mention The Prestige. Absolutely phenomenal film. It's been a while since I've seen The Book of Eli, but I remember being very split on it. One the one hand, it felt like a very solid post-apocalyptic action movie, but on the other hand, at the time I was a very... shall we say, combative atheist? (I'm still an atheist, I'm just a lot more chill about it.) So the overt Christian themes put me off a bit. I do remember Gary Oldman being pretty great in it, so overall I'd say I liked it more than I disliked it.
Okay just saw civil war. I appreciate all the depth they tried to give the plot to build each of the characters motives but I thought the movie had a lot of issues. The big fight between all the heroes pretty much felt unbelievable to me. There was such little conflict or tension between them, theres no way they'd all begin fighting over the issue at hand. More likely just stop and actually talk about what was going on (very unkind iron mans character to go by gut emotion). Honestly, it ruined the whole fight scene for me, it just felt really cheesy and forced to fight over an issue that small. Also the fact that the opposing heroes literally were casually to each other going "we're still friends right?" didn't help. I don't know if it was poor choreography or the lore reason being "they were holding back because they're all still friends" but even the fighting in that whole scene AND the end one felt pretty poor compared to other marvel movies. I thought the "bad guys"motives were pretty lame holistically. So his family died a year ago, suddenly he became a super villain and gained all this secret information just to set the avengers against each other and then killed the 5 super humans that were in cryo because he didn't care? Come on now gimme a break. Also, iron man should not have flipped out like that against the winter soldier and just started blindly attacking him. Despite the video, the entire movie building up to that was showing how the winter soldier can't control himself when being used by the brainwashing technique, everyone including iron man knew that. I thought the whole blind rage thing was really really stupid honestly, totally opposite of Tony Starks character in every movie leading up to this, where he's usually the logical and calm one. Also, is it just me or does iron man get weaker every single marvel movie he's in? In the first two he was a waking badass with fifty guns coming out of his armor from every angle. In this movie he used 2. In the other movies he fought much (physically) stronger enemies and much more people at once, but his armor constantly took damage from literally every hit in civil war so that something went wrong. He was getting his butt kicked by captain America, isn't captain supposed to be the weakest avenger? He's certainly not stronger than iron man in suit, at least not until this movie. And iron man was always portrayed to have better fighting skills too. I thought Spiderman, ant man, and The panther were all excellent and probably the highlights of the movie. The rest I honestly didn't like. But I am a huge Iron Man fan boy and I hate when he gets down played. Am I being too critical? @SecretSchnitzel @MartianMallCop @Given To Fly @A 3 Legged Goat @Xandrith
I didn't feel like Iron Man's character was out of place at all, he's consistently become more and more emotional/conflicted from the conclusion of Avengers-Iron Man 3-Age of Ultron-here, so I think his rage made complete sense. I thought he made the most sense out of all them. You're right about some of the other character's motivations feeling flimsy as hell though.
@MultiLockOn -Zemo was able to have the Hydra info because Black Widow made all of Hydra's info public in Winter Soldier -Captain America is pretty swoll. Did you not see how he pulled back a helicopter? Not the weakest avenger. That position belongs to Hawkeye. -It was the point of the airport scene that they didn't want to fight but felt like they had to. The situation could have been avoided if they talked it out which is the point of the scene. The whole point of the movie is about the failure to attempt compromising, and not giving into vengeance. -Zemo's motive was because superpowered people caused his family to die, he hates all of them. He killed the supersoldiers because of that to - Tony just saw his parents die in a video and the man who killed them is right next to him. You would be pretty pissed too. (If you have a good relationship with your parents). You are right he shouldn't have logically lashed out at him, but that decision wasn't made logically. -agree about Ant Man, Spiderman and Black Panther.
Additionally, Zemo was a Sokovian secret agent of sorts, so he definitely had the smarts to do the **** he did. And Cap the weakest Avenger? Nah. Dude can punch a hole through a tank I'd wager. He's not Hulk strong, but he could probably arm wrestle Thor. Hawkeye and Black Widow are the only non-powered humans on the team. Personally, I liked the 5 Winter Soldiers maguffin. It was a great red herring. If the movie had a flaw, it'd probably be the plot hole of "what if Tony didn't come to Siberia", although I'm sure Zemo wasn't counting on everyone coming there to begin with. Dude made due with the situation that presented itself.
I understand WHY the movie attempted to explain iron mans rage, I just thought it was poorly developed. I understand they've been trying to make him more emotional, but it was still out of character. And I understand what the movie tried to make the conflict to cause the whole hero fight, but that felt really stupid and underdeveloped. Captain America, of the avengers with super powers, is among the weaker ones yes? Isn't that cannon AND the way the movies presented them? I feel like anyone else would've had less issue with that helicopter as well. Just saying, iron man should've pushed his **** in no problem. I think this movie could have had a lot of potential with a different director.
I dunno, anyone really. The character building was weak. Iron man was out of character. The villain was weak. The fighting scenes felt poorly choreographed. I didn't notice any scenes with particularly great music choice. The conflict was honestly just lame. As usual, RDJ does awesome with what he's provided with, I think he's the best actor of the bunch. The camera is definitely starting to show his age though
Out of character!? Do you even Marvel, brah? I'll give you this though, the villain wasn't anything special or really memorable. Then again, outside of Loki and Thanos, Marvel Disney doesn't have access to their A-List villains because the majority of them are attached to the Fantastic 4 and X-Men franchises, which Fox owns the rights to. :/
Bro no one is a bigger iron man fanboy than me lol the way they portrayed him in this movie was awful. Both emotionally and in terms of how combat capable he is, it annoyed me the whole time.
Are you a comic Iron Man fanboy? Or a RDJ Iron Man fanboy? Personally, I found his portrayal well in lines with the Tony Stark of the comics and of the movies that they've developed so far. Tony Stark actually has a lot of emotional baggage he keeps buried deep, not to mention countless character flaws such as his vanity and rampant egotism.
Idk he was already stressed out, on thin ice with Bucky and Cap, and just watched Bucky maul his parents right after RDJ had a fight with his Dad that he never got o reconcile, I think it was fair.
Did you even read the comics, Multi? (Iron Man bullshit you're talking about) Zemo is one of the most unique villains from Marvel. It's his brain, which is his most powerful weapon, and not a gadget or a superhuman power. Civil War would have been a standard type of superhuman movie, if they would have had to fight against those superhumans. Luckily it delivers us with something fresh and different: Serious good versus good (Last part was damn serious. Period.) This movie would have been an absolute masterpiece, if it took the last step and... you know what I'm talking about. Unfortunately, Marvel has got some plans with all the actors for the future, and they already signed all the contracts, so they didn't dare to end it like they should have, logically. But damn, what an outcry it would have been. Schnitzl, are you freaking serious with Zach Snyder? Last good movie from him was Watchmen (I think Man of Steel was great to watch, too, however I think I belong to the minority with that opinion), and that's from 2009. The Russo brothers did a fantastic job with Civil War and I am very glad they are directing Infinity War I+II. After Winter Soldier and now Civil War I have no doubt, they will succeed greatly in their next mammoth project. And what is all the fuss about? I'm always happy and grateful to watch a Marvel movie, since, even though the movie might be mediocre like Thor2, the overarching story is being told, and it's so exciting for me to see what's next and how it all leads into the "big finale". Cheers.
