From the very beginning, community creations have been central to the Halo experience. From stacking up grenades underneath an unsuspecting Warthog to multiplayer movie-making, the Halo sandbox has always been fertile soil for millions of moments and memories created for, and by, the fans.

In 2007, Halo 3 upped the ante with the introduction of a map manipulation tool called Forge, and quite literally changed the game forever, enabling a cascade of creativity, from new map and unique game type experiences to interactive art – all created by the community itself.

When Forge was redesigned from the ground up for Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One, it opened the door to even more inventive community-created content, pushing the boundaries even further to give players more power and control than ever before, and removing as many constraints as possible to allow for the creation of incredibly high quality maps. From the stunningly beautiful maps created by WyvernZu, to the hilarious mini-games from TurbTastic, we’ve been continually blown away with the countless crazy and creative experiences that Halo fans have made. As a famous Spartan once said, however, “I think we’re just getting started…”

Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re bringing this same spirit of creation and collaboration to the PC later this year with Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition for Windows 10. Best of all? It will be absolutely free. In addition to the evolutions already present in the mode on Xbox One, Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition for Windows 10 will include some exciting new features designed specifically with PC users in mind, including:

    • Keyboard & Mouse Support – For the first time ever, Forgers will have the option of using a keyboard & mouse allowing for more precision control than ever before.
    • Increased Resolution – Support for multiple resolutions including 4k.
    • Test and Play with Friends – Enlist the help of Friends to help build, test, and play your Forge creations on Windows 10.
    • Build on Windows 10 and Publish to Xbox One – Experiences built on Windows 10 can be published to and played on Xbox One, opening the doors for countless new experiences to be enjoyed by players all over the world.
If you’re already finding yourself excited about the incredible possibilities that are opened up by expanding Forge to the Windows 10 platform, trust us, you’re not alone. 343 Industries UGC Director, Tom French, and his team are already chomping at the bit to get these new creative tools into the hands of the community.

“Forge on the PC will finally give the mouse/keyboard editing precision the community has always been clamoring for. On top of that, an updated and optimized UI geared towards mouse interactions makes a lot of the inputs in Forge easier/faster than before.

Since we released Forge in Halo 5 we’ve seen so many amazing new things come from it – from weird mini-games we could have never anticipated to meticulously crafted maps that are even approaching the visual quality of internally built maps. The team has continued to wonder what we’d get if we could put Forge in the hands of as many people as possible, and making it free on Windows 10 literally gives the chance to anyone who wants to jump in and try their hands at building a cool new map for Halo 5. I’m excited to see what the future content from the community will bring!”

    • Tom French, UGC Director, 343 Industries
We’ll have a lot more to share about Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition on Windows 10 later this year, but look for even more exciting updates coming to the Forge experience in Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One in the coming months – including new environments, advanced file sharing capabilities, new pieces, palettes, props, and much more.

I wonder what the minimum requirements will be.

Just because I spend a lot of time trying to make my maps look nice doesn't mean they don't have any gameplay value. To view maps in matchmaking and call them purely 'aesthetic' works is not only insulting but completely false and inappropriate. When making a map, presentation is a large component of making spaces memorable. Having a map that just plays well only satisfies gameplay requirements and does not achieve anything beyond that. My favorite maps tend to combine both art and design.

There really isn't anything like playing a game with a high-resolution low detail image. That's why I love my Super Mario Brothers in 2K

This is from Frankie, via Neogaf:

"I agree. However for folks wondering why we don't "just" port the whole game - realtalk:

While I personally believe it's an evergreen masterpiece of whimsy and wonder, it would be a year old by the time Forge released, and given the architecture, cloud, matchmaking, etc etc etc etc differences between platforms, it would be neither trivial to port, nor uncompromised in that process, given it was designed with targeted Xbox One perf in mind to begin with.

Both audiences deserve better than that, as you'll see with Halo Wars 2 onwards, which was designed with Xbox AND PC in mind from scratch and makes the most of each platform's relative strengths.

You misread my post. I wasn't saying anything about you, I was complaining about 343 and what they see forge as. If I wanted to say something about you, I would mentioned you by name. Don't get so defensive.

This has always been the case but is obvious now that the only excuse for poor art is a lack of talent. Poor selection of skins is no longer a credible excuse.

Ssshhh. Don't tell WyvernZu. It'll make it even easier for her to make most of us look bad. ;)

In a way I kinda wish they didn't tell me, cause now I'm too excited for PC to continue forging on Xbox.

Also, finally a reason to sell my xbox, thank god the migration to has been ultimately fixed by the thing holding me back.

we cant really make assumptions of the quality of it until further information is givin, overall i dont have alot of respect for 343 as a whole, but the team in charge of forge, knows what we want. it could go either way but id like to stay optimistic

we all want this, however, i HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt this will be available, to push textures through to halo 5 xbox one, halo 5 would have to have been designed to do this from the beginning, as locking down textures on a retail xbox has always been impossible on halo, at least from halo 3 and onward.

This is the right mindset to be in, Ive never had a chance to be a pc gamer, this is a good way to find out which is my better muse

I have a feeling it might be something relatively high to make sure the game runs at a consistent 60fps because the game psychics are most likely tied to the frame rate (which is stupid but common in video games) after seeing the lack of splitscreen.

I honestly just hope this port doesn't turn out to be a disaster like Gears of War or Quantum Break did on PC. Hopefully something somewhat smoother like Forza 6 Apex.

So, you don't want to participate in testing lobbies?

The included testing mode will be good for kicking around with friends but your target audience is still Xbox One players so you will need the console for proper real-world testing.

Don't you need Gold to Forge? Could it affect the ability to publish to the Xbox One? Nokyard makes a good point.

Yes this was on page two but i have to point something out.
Every computer, every smartphone, every single piece of equipment that connects the the internet, sends and receives information you don't know about. There isn't privacy issues with Windows 10, in fact why don't i take a pic of my balls and let the people "spying" on me see it. Guess what, it's basically just data about what version your computer is, what you've been searching, and how you've used your computer, they take this and direct ads more clearly towards you, and they also use this to fix issues in their OS. Google is even worse, they control basically the whole internet with their ads. And your search history is catalogued and used to target you a lot more than Microsoft does..

Microsoft states explicitly they don't use this data inappropriately.

In fact you're better off upgrading cus as Win 7 and 8 gets older, they are easier to "get into". Windows 10 has up to date virus/spyware checking.

So think twice about accusing a company about privacy issues.
Of course this is simply my opinion.

Actually a game loop ties everything but the physics engine to the frame rendering. The physics engine can run multiple times with a single game loop pass (cite: http://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/ExecutionOrder.html). The most common reason that frames slow down is that rendering is overloaded and cannot finish in a pre-allotted amount of time. This is why too many objects slow the frame rate or there are too many animations to render the frame rate slows.

Halo 5’s Windows 10 debut to include 4K support, free online multiplayer
"This limited free version of Halo 5 won't include the game's single-player campaign, nor will it include multiplayer matchmaking with random opponents. However, Microsoft representatives have confirmed to Ars that the free Windows 10 game will support unfettered online play with anyone on a player's friends list. That means players can create or download a Forge map and invite anyone else playing the Windows 10 version to join in and play to whatever "kill count," time limit, or other win condition they've set. Even better, Microsoft says that this friends-only multiplayer mode in Windows 10 will fully support mouse-and-keyboard game controls."

      And your point is????

At this point,my next phone will be an iphone rather than android. As much as I hate Apple, at least they want to shift the ability to decrypt exclusively into the hands of the consumers so that they won't get bothered by the NSA/CIA/FBI/BATF/DoD/HS/TSA/DeputyDawg because it won't be possible for them to help.
