From the very beginning, community creations have been central to the Halo experience. From stacking up grenades underneath an unsuspecting Warthog to multiplayer movie-making, the Halo sandbox has always been fertile soil for millions of moments and memories created for, and by, the fans.

In 2007, Halo 3 upped the ante with the introduction of a map manipulation tool called Forge, and quite literally changed the game forever, enabling a cascade of creativity, from new map and unique game type experiences to interactive art – all created by the community itself.

When Forge was redesigned from the ground up for Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One, it opened the door to even more inventive community-created content, pushing the boundaries even further to give players more power and control than ever before, and removing as many constraints as possible to allow for the creation of incredibly high quality maps. From the stunningly beautiful maps created by WyvernZu, to the hilarious mini-games from TurbTastic, we’ve been continually blown away with the countless crazy and creative experiences that Halo fans have made. As a famous Spartan once said, however, “I think we’re just getting started…”

Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re bringing this same spirit of creation and collaboration to the PC later this year with Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition for Windows 10. Best of all? It will be absolutely free. In addition to the evolutions already present in the mode on Xbox One, Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition for Windows 10 will include some exciting new features designed specifically with PC users in mind, including:

    • Keyboard & Mouse Support – For the first time ever, Forgers will have the option of using a keyboard & mouse allowing for more precision control than ever before.
    • Increased Resolution – Support for multiple resolutions including 4k.
    • Test and Play with Friends – Enlist the help of Friends to help build, test, and play your Forge creations on Windows 10.
    • Build on Windows 10 and Publish to Xbox One – Experiences built on Windows 10 can be published to and played on Xbox One, opening the doors for countless new experiences to be enjoyed by players all over the world.
If you’re already finding yourself excited about the incredible possibilities that are opened up by expanding Forge to the Windows 10 platform, trust us, you’re not alone. 343 Industries UGC Director, Tom French, and his team are already chomping at the bit to get these new creative tools into the hands of the community.

“Forge on the PC will finally give the mouse/keyboard editing precision the community has always been clamoring for. On top of that, an updated and optimized UI geared towards mouse interactions makes a lot of the inputs in Forge easier/faster than before.

Since we released Forge in Halo 5 we’ve seen so many amazing new things come from it – from weird mini-games we could have never anticipated to meticulously crafted maps that are even approaching the visual quality of internally built maps. The team has continued to wonder what we’d get if we could put Forge in the hands of as many people as possible, and making it free on Windows 10 literally gives the chance to anyone who wants to jump in and try their hands at building a cool new map for Halo 5. I’m excited to see what the future content from the community will bring!”

    • Tom French, UGC Director, 343 Industries
We’ll have a lot more to share about Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition on Windows 10 later this year, but look for even more exciting updates coming to the Forge experience in Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One in the coming months – including new environments, advanced file sharing capabilities, new pieces, palettes, props, and much more.

I understand what you're saying, but changing app permissions doesn't go a long way, especially considering some of this stuff is programmed deeeep in the OS. What phone do you have that's locked down? Android? Hell no, great security but if you think you have any privacy you're insane lmao. Apple? No lol. Windows phone, obviously not. Blackberry? Even they build their OS on android now. "Privacy" means nothing to me honestly, they're not sitting there reading my emails and watching me through the front facing camera.

Considering you said flashed, I'm assuming you're talking about custom android ROM. Obviously that's always a possibility but that's 1% of 1% of phone users.

yup, wasn't entirely sure of the correct terminology. if he's that paranoid over privacy i will be dissapointed if he hasn't.

Damn guys, forge is coming to PC and you guys start about how shitty you think windows 10 is..

Quoting myself - "My phone is about as locked down as it can get considering how sharetastic it wants to be. "

Multi, I didn't realize you were such a conspiracy nut. Sure apps have a way of sharing your data, programmed at the lowest system levels but disabling them will lock that down. Now agreeably this could be re-enabled at any time and share your info anyway, but then again someone could just break my window and have a happy wander around my home.

What I'm talking about is that after disabling these data sharing settings the only way for them to grab data is to re-enable it on an update (do not auto update) or to hack your computer. Again not much different then picking your lock. How many times have you misplaced something in the house that you could tell if it was you and not somebody else who moved it.

For me the most important things is that my privacy not be "openly" shared. Again to reinforce the home analogy, I just want my door to close and lock as apposed to having it laying on my porch. It's a somewhat false sense of security but it's better than none.

One of the best things about the news here is that its entirely FREE. There are going to be a lot of new people outside of the console demographic interested to start making levels with this. Similar to the release of forge for Halo 5, we should see a new surge talent emerge very close to the time of its release. Seeing new people come into our community and making amazing things that blow the rest of us away has always been really exciting for me to watch.

My best friends son is a huge Minecraft kid and has always wanted to make Forge maps like his "uncle" If it weren't for the fact the my other best buddy and I surprised my best friend with a Xbone for his bday last Sunday this, soon to hit, service would have been his only way to get a chance to try.

There are tonnes of amazing people outside the gaming community that love architecture and or map layout and design, that feel no interest in killing each other playing fps games. Not that I've seen it as much recently but Halo Forge art had some pretty amazing stuff made in it, and I would love to see more of that talent being represented.

I want Halo meets Minecraft. If we could get even simple AI support in Forge I would love to see some basic Halo-esque story missions built. Actually more like Halo meets Project Spark except without all the sucking.

It's amazing how people can worry about their PC running Windows will lead to the loss of privacy while they can't wait to purchase and take home the latest and greatest NSA audio visual bugging devices. Stalin is only sad he was born 100 years too soon.

I so disagree. Without console and h5 they won't be making maps for halo. The whole forge will be more stand alone like Minecraft.

Unless you know something you aren't telling us.........

how is the forge going to be stand alone like minecraft when you can publish the maps you make to xboxone for use in halo 5?

personally i'm hoping they evolve this into a game creation tool for PC.

for anybody interested in privacy, this is worth checking out

I took this at face value "advanced file sharing capabilities" but then I had a thought, could this finally be the group object import/export feature we were told about in January?

      Uh...

      Snowden...

And the only way to lock down your phone is either install your own os and know what you are doing...

Or crush it with a hammer.

Forge is like a dumbed down version of toolkits like Unity and UE4. What would be nice is if this PC version more like Unity where you can import meshes and textures, and generate more complex lightmaps. So basically you can make maps whose visual quality is on part with disc maps.

      Blender

I use blender and unity and the only issue I have had is reassigning axes in the import phase.

The entire purpose of forge is to eliminate modeling entirely. In fact I decided I needed to create a forge like editor to rapidly build maps for my own game. Once I decided to go down that course I then decided to make it an offering in my own game. I would have released the map editor by now but I have side tracked the last five or six months to protect my IP.
