A few weeks ago we featured a book called Community Evolved which explore the past decade of Halo's fan community and features interviews from respected members that have made significant contributions to it.

ForgeHub has been given exclusive permission to share one of its chapters with the public. The passage we are sharing is intended as a preview experience only and does not contain all of the forge related content.

Nicholas Alexander, better known as WARHOLIC, is a community cartographer and the current administrator of ForgeHub.

I graduated from Penn State University and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus in painting and drawing. I always huddled over my sketchbook when I was younger but never realized it could be a career path for me until my senior year of high school. I'm looking to fuse both business and artistic passion like I once did with an art gallery where I worked. I've just got one problem: my passion for Halo is greater than everything else and I can't understand why.

Halo was the first game I bought with the Xbox console and much like purchasing the NES and playing Mario for the first time, I fell in love. I became a part of the community the moment I signed up to ForgeHub back in 2011 and started submitting Forge maps and participating on the forums. I had zero experience with level design and was releasing some pretty sophomoric material to say the least. But even with my nascent design skill set I was rapidly learning via apprenticeship from 'Waldo the Lemon' and a handful of other designers.

I first became involved with a community role when The Halo Council website started up - I was left head of the Forge department. I had a lot of fun there. About two months after the site closed down I was selected as a Community Cartographer. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Community Cartographers, it's an official community role that works directly with 343's sustain team to get the best content from the community implemented into matchmaking. I remember being excited to enter the group at a time when energy and motivation was needed the most.

After learning the ropes and helping implement some successful playlist updates, I helped improve the diversity of our team by bringing in some talented forgers in the community. I wanted to expand both creative and intellectual resources for our efforts in Big Team Battle. That's when I reached out to PsychoDuck. He is an extremely talented large scale Forger and happens to be the leading proponent behind the successful YouTube channel, The Halo Forge Epidemic (THFE).

After Insane54 stepped down from running ForgeHub, a few others took over the reins; the domain was eventually put up for sale. I had plans to start a Halo website that would have a map submission page and a private content management system for the Community Cartographers. When ForgeHub.com became available I couldn't let my fond memories of ForgeHub and its rich history get abandoned again. If I passed it up, no one would be crazy enough to attempt to salvage it again, and the years of sumbitted content would be lost forever. Now, the objective isn't to restore the website, its about restoring the community inhabiting it. My only intention is to bring this community back and hopefully I can achieve that in some capacity.

The best part about the Forge system is how accessible it is to nascent level designers. You don't need a background in programming or access to advanced game development software. The user interface is intuitive and the ability to jump in and out of game mode allows us to test and adjust the levels and distances of our topology in real time. They system's largest drawback is un-optimization; the building pieces we are given are not adequately optimized to the efficiency needed to minimize frame rate latency and this has been a constant challenge for forgers from the beginning.

"The hardest part about getting a community to build for your game is making their experience worthwhile."

Despite how positively or negatively Forge maps are received in matchmaking, people should remember that the content generated by the community is free and obtained through mechanics of crowdsourcing. Developers do not pay for services rendered while receiving hundreds upon thousands of individual contributions from the community. Where developers are limited by fiscal resources and number of employees, we are not.

    war2.jpg
One thing that bothers me [interviewed pre-Halo 5] is that they aren't investing enough in this area. We should be getting better tools to create and they aren't taking full advantage of the content we are capable of delivering. Think of the thousands of Forgers that are committed to create new environments for the game while the developers don't need to spend any additional funds to hire or employ these people. The hardest part about getting a community to build for your game is making their experience worthwhile.

The benefits of crowdsourcing content completely outweighs its absence. There is no cost to use community generated content other than employing individuals to harvest it and to maintain the tool set. Our greatest contribution as a community is the content we can deliver. With the right tools and the means to distribute said content we have the potential to achieve unimaginable results.

    WHERE TO PURCHASE
A hardcover copy of the book, Community Evolved, can be purchased online via Lulu.com for $28.

Interesting to hear some background on how Forgehub developed to what it is today. I remember visiting it back in Halo 3 and being pretty intimidated by the format of the site. It has definitely changed and improved a lot since then. You have done a great job on improving the community WARHOLIC! I look forward to seeing the community grow and improve even more.

I've never been appreciative of the pay-with-exposure model, especially when it's in a contest/competition form, where exposure comes only for the winner(s) which, when stripped down, the Community->CC->Matchmaking pipeline is. Since I'm benefitting from Forge and the Halo Sandbox as a test bed and community university of sorts in lieu of being able to get back into school for multiplayer design, the fact that I'm essentially being used in equal measure isn't as big a deal. That said, I'm surprised that you ignored that facet of the relationship, especially considering your background as an artist.

Honestly, considering the fact that they are building enormous prize pools for people who just play the game (extremely) well, rather than those who create and curate content for the game, I'm finding myself rather disappointed by my own involvement and the enabling behavior of those in positions of influence. "It's always been this way" is no excuse to let it continue either. Unfortunately, both the perceived and actual levels of "corruption" in the community content pipeline would not do well with money thrown in and would get much worse. Should the changes being introduced to that system address these issues, I would rather hope to see things change and people be properly compensated for their contributions.

Those things aside, it was nice to get to know a bit more about your background, Nicholas. Grats on your recent career move, here's hoping that leads to you getting your earned rewards.

      Edit:

"content generated by the community is free"
"they aren't investing enough in this area"
"don't need to spend any additional funds"
      "There is no cost"
      "making their experience worthwhile"

I say this because you seem to conflate the way things are with how they should be. It /is/ virtually "free" (relatively minimal expense, large reward), they aren't investing in the people, but the product, they don't need to spend any additional funds, and people enjoy making the content (worthwhile experience). It could still have relatively minimal expense to hiring industry professionals, they could handle the additional funds by putting the creators ahead of, or parallel to, those who play for show, and those who aren't just making things for fun would be properly rewarded.

Before anyone says I took that out of context, the context is viewable via the same URL this is, you're just lazy.

This interview was conducted well before any information regarding Halo 5's long term 'sustain' plan with forge was announced. I fully realize that the updates to forge in Halo 5 require additional funds.

When I stated that the "content generated by the community is free", that's entirely accurate. No one is compensated for the work they do in forge. If you asked me if I think compensation should be rewarded to forgers, my answer would be different based on the particular situation. For example, Valve financially rewards their community designers for the content they create for matchmaking.

Just providing some info you may have missed between the lines;)

I get that, wasn't ignoring it.

Also, I was referring to their in-house expense relating to those on staff who's job it is to interface with the community and provide us with the tools we have. Essentially their cost of teaching us to fish so we can catch food for ourselves and possibly share the excess with them, if you will.

I wouldn't expect something like the Grifball Map I submitted to be worthy of a large payout like what happens with CSGO, nor would I expect something that large for any Forged Content, because of the tools used and ease of creation we have relative to those tools; I would, however suggest that content put into the mainline that assists in increasing the longevity of the game, further increasing the opportunity they have to feed off of microtransactions and retaining interest in the franchise for the next release, garners some compensation for the creator relative to that assistance.

The man behind the flaming skull has been revealed.

Cool read! It totally took me down memory lane. I didn't know about the any of the behind the scenes stuff after THC died, but that timeframe held fond memories for me as growing forger.
I just naturally gravitated towards the Beyond Forums when I came back to forging and was surprised when I heard ForgeHub was the place where everyone was hanging out.

Awesome you decided to invest in the hub War, I appreciate the environment you've helped cultivate (I remember a less cultured experience in my Halo Reach days ;) ) you've really given a whole lot of people a place to express themselves and share their creative endeavors.

      Many Thanks

You are a handsome man nick. We need more faces like that heading the demographic to help progress gaming in the hopes of making it socialy acceptable and acknowledged as an intillectualy hobby as well a potential art form.

Nik, I've known for a long time that your dedication and passion to the community and Halo is really something commendable and of a different nature. I'm happy you've finally achieved this in an official capacity. You've grown into such a solid figure in the community and truly deserve this recognition. Well done!

@WARHOLIC is one of the few forgers I've seen who paints his maps beforehand. I really appreciate that kind of dedication.

Can we talk about how handsome he is though? Where are the nikemojis?

I'm kinda glad we don't get paid for putting maps to matchmaking because that'd cause the Forge community a lot more drama than we already have.

I think it is awesome you are an art major. I have a Bachelor of Music degree and what drew me to forge for the first time in Halo 5 is the artistic side of the process, essentially taking a blank canvas and turning it into a virtual play space.
