So, I was working on a map tonight that I have been working on for some time. I was really proud of what I had done do far. And then -BLAM- hit the fan. I was doing some scripting and long story short, I got it wrong and found myself trying to delete an item that was scripted to On Spawn: Despawn. You see, I was trying to script it to not be there in the beginning of the game but appear when triggered by another item. Well, you probably see the problem. When I would trigger it to spawn using the other item, it immediately despawns. So, not knowing how to delete it, which I still don't by the way, I went into map tools and selected to delete all objects on the map. Before doing any of this, I conciously told myself, "Do not save this!" Well once I saw it didn't work and there was one item on the budget, my thumb decided it had its own agenda and hit the quick save button. I immediately panicked but there was nothing I could do. I guess for some odd reason my subconcious mind said to press it since it has become such an automatic habit for me when I forge. I save obsessively. Anyway, I lost everything and am having to rebuild from memory which really sucks. Especially because I'm working with rock chunks so it's physically impossible to rebuild exactly the same. I don't think it looks as good as before, but here's to hoping I can still produce a good quality map. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you think we should have the option to toggle the quick save feature on or off to help prevent this type of issue?
That sucks Wally, but I agree with No God Anywhere - you don't need to version every little change, but keeping the past two or three versions is usually a good idea even just for corrupt files.
I would like an undo/redo option that can go back and forth a few steps. I do stupid stuff all the time. This last year... Ugh. lol. If my brain is halfway working, I remember to use the safeguards I've figured out to keep me from housing myself. If possible do things in ways that make it almost impossible to mess up. Locked myself out of the house too many times so I started locking the door with the key from the outside instead of turning the lock before closing the door. If I don't wanna forget something I put it on top of something I must have when I leave. In Forge, I do the save as option a bunch and I'm thinking of always using the start/menu button to save (avoid quick save)... That way I kinda have to think about what I'm doing. It's not a pain as long as I remember the consequences of being a dumbass!
I don't. I guess I didn't communicate that as well. What I meant is I am quite frequently quick saving the map I am working on; not saving as a new map each time. It's a habit like reloading my weapon after every enemy encounter even when it's not empty. That's why I wish we had the ability to turn off the quick save feature if we don't want to use it.
