Lets start a Forgers appreciation Day once a week Lets face it we all (Forgers) fall into this trap at some point. We get wrapped up in our own creations that we dont take the time to give thanks to everyone posting content and support. And lets be real here this site could use a moral boost. I feel as though with this site ( and nothing personal as its just the nature of the beast) but maps go on the wayside if you are not well established already, are not doing an exact replica, or recreating or inventing a new minigame/race. thats a trap that all forgers go through because sadly we are all forgers and hence really look at validation from are own maps and not exploring others creations or at the bare minimum never comment on them. So lets change this. Lets try something and if it doesnt work out then hey at least we tried right. What im proposing is simple Every saturday lets go down the list of content being uploaded and pick a map or 2 or 3 or however many and try it out. after you have tryed it out come back to the forum and leave a note or some guesture that you acknowledge and tryed the users content. this will encourage and boost moral so much and will give forgers a reason to stay and continue to build their library. what do you guys think
I'm going to be honest here. Every forger here started at the same point. No one knew them or their forging capabilities. If a forger wants their work to be recognized and would like to be the best they can be then it would show. They'd spend time writing up lengthy descriptions, asking community members for advice, posting in the WAYWO thread or creating their own Wip thread. Doing these things, posting in the shoutbox or even contacting other forgers on xbl is how you get noticed. It's not our duty but their own. Of course you can drop a map and it might blow up but what I really like to see is the forgers who show effort and promise. When someone asks me to check out their maps on xbl i usually end up following their work until they stop updating me. A good example of someone who's map im looking forward to being posted and has evolved a ton is @Soldat Du Chene He's been trying to get a lot of feedback and has changed his map around a lot. I don't like asyms much and probably would have looked over his map previously but my attention is there now. He goes out of his way rather than just posting it up and letting it drop in the pages. Effort is key. Effort is what deserves appreciation.
I think taking the time to regularly contribute to site feedback is a good thing... kind of a "seeder" mentality that would be really good for the community. No god anywhere has a good point though, and calling out @Soldat Du Chene (gamertag Explorer Oak) is a good one... Just checked out Colonial, and damn! I don't know if not posting a WIP thread is a great idea though - if he hadn't messaged me and asked for feedback, I'd never have checkout out his map because I didn't know he existed... and that would have been a crying shame.
Wow --- Double Post Merged, Feb 13, 2016 --- Lol, thanks dudes, can't believe the reception. First Halo 5 map project i'm real motivated now!
If you are desperate for feedback I suggest signing up for testing lobbies. Be more proactive than just posting a WIP thread or publishing a map in the map section. Considering how much of a hassle it is right now to download a map don't expect other people to take the initiative and download a map and give feedback. This only really happens with maps that are made by people that are known for making quality work or maps that show a lot of promise.
I agree with the overall reaction to the first post. I've always been pretty strapped for free time, and therefore focused almost exclusively on forging. This meant I didn't have much time to playtest with other forgers, or even just hang out in lobbies and get to know people (if you can do this, you should). But even that won't necessarily prevent you from getting some degree of recognition. Given my situation, the way I approached getting recognition (and I wasn't even looking for recognition, I was only looking to get some legitimate feedback on my maps) was by offering constructive, detailed feedback on other peoples maps. I'd take a half hour to run through a map, and then post my feedback, and do this once or twice per week. Eventually people started paying more attention to my maps, because they recognized my name, AND knew that I had some idea of what worked and didn't work in competitive map design. Don't expect anything to happen overnight. It took me almost 9 months before I got a single reply on a map post.
Id be content with a Doju Appreciation day/week/month. Feel free to leave nice comments in my mail box. On a serious note, nah, you just have to go about feedback in the correct manner. Its the same with anything in life, you come into a new scene as a nobody, and have to work on your networking skills. Just pumping out map after map wont do this. There are lots of threads in here to mingle with forgers, develop partnerships, which leads to getting into skype/discord groups/testing lobbies etc. Who are these people?
If you openly develop a map, and post about it frequently people will respond. If you have opinions people will respond. If you are looking for responses write forge play by plays in WAYWO like Goat, or preach philosophies with weird buzz words like Fated. Be really arrogant. Be really encouraging. Be something that people will recognize. If you want to be established, then establish yourself. People know me and it's not because I put out content, because I haven't released a single map ever, and might not ever. It's not that hard to get feedback and encouragement if you put yourself out there and ask for it. And it's not just about your map, it's about you as a person. Be someone, and people will see you as someone. Could we be better as a community at addressing newer user's content? Sure. Would it be better for the growth of the site? Sure. But you say established forgers get a better shake as if it's hard to become established, when it's really not. We are a small community in the grand scheme and it's hard not to recognize an new poster in WAYWO who posts a couple of times a day. And after a bit you're established that's really all it takes. If you want the benefits of being a part of a community you have to participate in it. It's not on the community to notice you--it's on you to get noticed. So yes, your suggestion is great for anyone who's posted maps and not received feedback, but it's a bit of a slap in the face to established forgers and established map reviewers who already participate in the established community. Join the community, give feedback, and you will get feedback in return.
I think overall when i created this thread it wasnt meant to be a slap in the face, and im sure if you have followed me in any capacity you know my back story. It was meant to show an appreciation for those who have a hard time getting to that point. to help those out who may be in need of support. that bieng said im pretty content in where im at. Just food for thought at the dismissal of said approach.
Sorry. I'm in a cranky ranty mood today. It's not a slap in the face. It's just the way you worded it irked me. If you framed it a little differently, I probably would have supported the idea. But in the end, if the goal is to help new forgers, I stand by my point of establishing yourself. It might be a good pat on the back to new forgers to comment on their work, but ultimately they won't actually be helped unless the help themselves/establish themselves.
Other fools like me, who thought they knew everything and liked it when I typed stuff they agreed with. In other words, it helps to connect with people that share a similar philosophy, even if that philosophy is really narrow minded. Some people would call them 'Forge Cliques'. I wouldn't disagree with that characterization, but the point stands nonetheless. That doesn't mean you should say what you think other people want to hear. It just means you should provide feedback based upon an approach or philosophy you believe in, and find other people that share your mindset.
its sad but true not everyone shares the same view point on forge, so but to be honest here i share the view point of the outcast, i embrase it, like a golden chalise, i dont conform i freeform, thats just me
I'm all for everyone doing their best to give feedback to one another to make their maps play better, but this "forge senpai notice me" stuff seems silly. As long as people give feedback to others when they can and then the user takes that feedback to evolve their forge techniques and make a map to be more fun, I would hope that it should be satisfying enough for everyone involved.
I don't think it's sad at all. Differing opinions is what provides us with the variety we have with custom content. Nobody really conforms to anything, regarding design philosophy. They all form their philosophy based on what they believe plays best. I'm curious, though: What beliefs do you have, that you think being labeled an outcast suits you?
I just think its more of a shame that more then anything else nobody here would be willing to take a few minutes and look over these maps, granted i get that 450 maps a month is a lot to go over but its a shame that people feel so strongly against haveing one day to take some time out of their day and be, i cant think of any other word honestly other then decent. Id like to say i meant no ill will or hatred if it came across in these posts, nor was this meant to be a "notice me sempai" thread. Thought it was a good idea but its apparent nobody shares this view point, ill leave this thread be and let it die on another note, i dont think as a whole this community is for me, there are a good people on this forum but this isnt for me, i tried
