Ok so I've built a massive vehicle. This does not involve that new vehicle welding glitch. Scripted only, one switch goes forward, one turns left and one right. It's taken me a weeks worth of free time to make it turn and now that it does I've it a dead end. Basically I've created wheels and scripted them to turn on command. Problem is once the vehicles turned 90* the wheels want to rotate a different way because they are aligned differently to the map. Pitch becomes roll or yaw for example. The only option that looks remotely right is the tool setting to have rotation set to object. But this only seems to work with manual rotation and not scripting rotation. Hope this made sense. Have I hit a dead end?
yeah at the moment you can only change movement to local axis, and not rotation. I think you're screwed...
Think I know what you mean, it could move in all directions but wouldn't actually turn? For this particular project it does need to turn. The only perfect sphere, I think, is the soccer ball which I had worked with earlier in the week. I made frames around it so the ball could stay loose but not roll away then used scripted block to push the vehicle around. Came with its own problems. The vehicle is quarter the length of Parallax lol. I'm using huge cylinders as wheels which are welded to pipes as a type of axel. I maybe got carried away with size but managed to have it moving so far... If it wasnt for the rotation issue it would work fine.
Upgrade to hover technology. Sci-fi! Not sure if changing ideas does you any good at this point, but maybe that might avoid a dead end. I would like to know more about what mechanisms you're using. It sounds like you're using separate normal mode physics objects that are mechanically linked. If so, which objects control the movement? Or is it one object that's controlled with position/velocity/rotation scripting and you just need it to look proper?
Its made up of five separate welded groups. Four of which are the wheels. I couldnt just script the main part of the vehicle to move because A) It becomes dislodged and untidy and B) I can't have the switch that sends the message welded to the structure its commanding to move. The switches are welded to the main part of the vehicle, which is simply set to normal physics. The wheels are the moving parts which are told to rotate.
Little update - I got it working! I used the new wheel idea and blended it with my first idea and it works like a charm.... however, the glitch that groups all groups together when exiting/reloading a saved map means it will not work for a custom game... this really is a dead end. Unless it gets fixed with this update or perhaps someone understands this glitch and knows a way to prevent it from happening.
I really want to complete the map before making a video, a wee showcase. I contacted Tom French about bug fixes in this coming update and it sounds like the one preventing me from proceeding might be patched, Ill need to wait and see. If it's patched ill push on and get the map complete. If not Ill make a video of what I've done so far.
