People need to stop saying Plasma caster is bad! It's very useful, if you know how and when to use it.
I spent a good (more like unproductive) 30 minutes on H5 forge for my first time, exploring random things. I don't know if I have zero mental capacity to forge now or I need to spend a wicked amount of time learning this, but I commend those who have already completed maps, let alone aesthetically pleasing ones.
I think it took me around 2 days of just ****ing around with ****, making random ugly things just to see how all the new stuff worked and to get used to the controls.
Decided to stick with the forerunner theme, started my center structure: I already had the layout planned out, I'm just trying to mix in the theme along with as much natural terrain as possible to make this more of a level design than a forge map. This is still more of a block out. I intend to return for more details & atmospheric changes.
i've reached a point where i would rather look at my map than do the tedious job of finishing it. it's too hard to build lol
Man the lighting on parts of my map just looks straight up bad. Like on one part of the map I stand in my spartan turns completely black, and there isn't even a shadow where I'm standing. Any tips for lighting/shadows..?
Don't feel bad. Most of my first couples hours was spent looking through all the different pieces... I didn't even figure out how to rotate any pieces until my third or fourth session in forge. Honestly, I just started playing around for a couple hours... freestyling, having fun. It's only a matter of time before you learn the pieces and the controls... have fun and put in the time. You'll be alright.
I just started work on this potential Clue map (don't hate me plz) already just cause. If Clue doesn't work out in the future then I will likely turn it into an aesthetic map or maybe even a puzzle map of some sort? I have some really cool ideas in store using some intricate scripting for secrets on this map and possibly set them as a precedent for potential future Halo 5 Clue maps as well. The theme is a jail, obviously, but I still have yet to actually build the prison itself so here's the prison yard so far... P.S. It feels so nice to actually be able to add in little details that you couldn't before in forge.
Been lurking on here a lil bit since Forge was released. Pretty hyped to see what you guys are producing so early into things <3
I agree the Grenade Launcher was good, but we finally have a power weapon that truly requires skill and thought to use. Grenade Launcher was too easy to use, in my opinion. Pretty much every power weapon is now.
Balancing the Ease vs Difficulty of Use for a weapon is interesting... Go too far in difficulty range and you're setting up what is essentially a barrier to entry, making the weapon so difficult that players are discouraged to even try mastering it. Go to far in the easy range and the weapon is too forgiving and is essentially broken, leading to players preferring it over other sandbox options (case point BR vs Pistol). While the sandbox should be difficult to master, it shouldn't be so difficult that the shorter distribution tail of players (there are far more "unskilled vs skilled players) would be struggling with it. I believe the Grenade Launcher was well balanced in this regard, as it was just difficult enough to make mastery a challenge for the above average player, but not too easy for how powerful it was. Halo 5 is interesting as it has weapons that fall into all three of the above ranges... You've got the Pistol in the sweet spot, the BR and Automatics in the too easy spot, and the Caster in the too difficult spot. All the weapons are powerful, and it can be argued whether a weapons Opt TTK makes it too powerful, or if it's really the ease of use.
I loved shooting the GL into a hallway & waiting for someone to run through & then let it explode there. We don't have a weapon to do that now. I'm so in love with this forge. I wanted to change the angle of the base compared to the center structure & make them closer to each other. It's so nice to be able to just group them shift & move instead of completely rebuilding them.
It's really the best forge we've ever had. Grouping, then duplicating a structure is the best thing ever. Terrain is awesome. Fog is awesome. Scripting is awesome. It's just so good.
I've been working on an experimental 4 v 4 squad design on Glacier that incorporates 2 banshees. I've been trying to create interesting interactions between banshees and infantry whilst balancing travel times, so I've created several intercrossing tubes that the banshees can fly through. These tubes are the only way for a banshee to cross between red side, blue side, and middle atrium, and are important for teams to hold to ensure their banshee safe access and to prevent hijacks. The first few tests I've run have gone pretty well, with an interesting dynamic between the banshees and players on foot. CTF has proven more enjoyable than slayer, and we've gotten some really good stalemates with each side trying to use their banshee to kill the carrier while players on foot try to re-capture. Unfortunately I've run into numerous technical issues in forge, most likely due to the high quantity of rings and cylinders I need for the Covenant aesthetic. My light map is hitting 100% at around 300 objects, and above that pieces often fail to light correctly. I've turned off baked lighting for all rocks for the time being in order to help prevent that, but it's been pretty limiting and is hurting my ability to make the map readable. Hopefully 343i can fix some of the objects that do not light correctly in the next few updates.
Messing about with a smaller 1v1 map maybe 2v2 based off the centre room of an old quake map. *Edit - Sooo after taking this screenshot in theatre I went back into forge to continue working on my map but after the map loads up I appear to be trapped inside the terrain of the map cant bring up any forge menus or anything... anyone had or know how to solve this issue?
I had the same problem the first day forge came out. I think the work around is to get someone to join your game so they can place a few spawns for you. I think there is a post about this particular problem somewhere on this website. As for your map, it is looking interesting! Would love to see more pictures to get a better idea of layout.
