Well, Halo 5 is out and, yes, I caved and bought it.

While the game is a drastic improvement over the beta, and better than what I had originally anticipated, there are still a few minor things I'm not entirely satisfied with. I could sit here and rant about what I feel could have been done differently, but that's not the point of this thread. Here's the point: We have an unprecedented amount of control over custom game options compared to past Halo titles. So, what are we to do with this new found freedom? Personally, I would like to see a more classic Halo experience flourish next to the new one created in Halo 5 through the use of Forge and custom games. I imagine I'm not alone in this, and want to create a sub-community around a universal set of gametype settings that cater to a more classic Halo experience. Legacy Settings.

So, what are Legacy Settings? The basic idea is that they are gametypes that have disabled the new Spartan Abilities introduced in Halo 5, and tweaked the existing settings to compensate for that change. Here's the question, though: What do we change, and how? This is where the community will come in. Because I want these to be universally accepted settings throughout the community, I feel their creation should be a community collaboration.

The first step is to create new movement settings. Halo 5 has all new movement mechanics that the game was designed around. When you take away these new mechanics, what's left doesn't feel "quite right". You feel sluggish. I have created nine Legacy Settings beta gametypes to try and tackle this problem. Each gametype focuses on a different variation of the base movement and jumping settings. I would like to open these up to the community for testing. Since there is no fileshare system yet, I have created a Google Doc displaying the names of the gametypes and their respective settings.

-Legacy Settings Beta Gametypes- Phase One: Movement

I would like to invite anyone interested in playing/supporting/designing for Legacy Settings to create some of these gametypes and test them out with friends. Once you have played them, please leave any feedback in this thread. I will use this feedback to further tweak and change things, and release new versions of the gametypes as time goes on. Hopefully this will be finished by the time Forge comes out, and we can have two distinct communities coexisting, designing, and playing side by side with each other.

When creating each gametype, please disable the following:
    -Thruster Pack
    -Spartan Charge
    -Ground Pound
    -Stabilizer
    -Sprint
    -Clamber

Starting Weapons: Battle Rifle and Magnum OR Assault Rifle and Magnum.

If anyone has suggestions for changes, please let me know. This is a collaborative effort, and I want the settings to be widely accessible and accepted. This first phase is focusing purely on movement. Changes to damage tables and health will come later, but please do not refrain from suggestions about those as well.

A few things to keep in mind:

-This is not to see how well these settings play on current maps.
-I have been using Pegasus as a test bed due to easily made measurements for speed, distance, and height.
-Please focus on the handling and feel of the gametype itself when engaging other players.
-These first betas are testing movement only.
-Things like starting weapons and radar will be separate variables when the settings are finalized.
-These settings are not meant to replace standard H5 settings, but to be an alternative to play and design for.
-All suggestions and feeback are welcome.

Posted this on HaloCustoms but I want to hear your opinions on here too:

"Just a question but are there any gripes against the stabilizer? I personally don't believe it really would negatively effect gameplay on a legacy style map unlike sprint or clamber. I feel it could be a unique addition to legacy settings, should it not negatively impact anything. We can even adjust the duration and gravity effect of the stabilizer if need be."

My main problem with Stabilizer is that it makes jump shots too easy. In classic Halo, if you were gonna stay behind cover and jump up, you had a split second to make the shot. With stabilizer, you have an easier time doing this. Admittedly, this is a minor complaint, but the point is to make Legacy Settings as close to classic as possible given the current sandbox and engine.

What about increasing the gravity of the stabilizer so players drop faster while it's active? I know legacy settings are supposed to emulate classic Halo but I still want to see some more opinions and thoughts on this. I'm by no means trying to defend the Spartan Abilities, I'm just wondering if we can still add something in that would positively mix things up just a tiny bit, so its not exactly like playing every Halo game prior to Reach (with faster TTK) with every new game that comes out.

EDIT: I should probably clear up a few things as I contradicted myself in this post. Bear with me when I explain this because I'm terrible at explaining things: What I meant by "mix things up" is by evolving what the last good competitive Halo title (Halo 3 in this case) did, similar to how Halo 3 was a smooth evolution of what Halo 2.

Regarding gameplay, Halo 3 evolved what Halo 2 did by giving us on-map equipment, better balanced weapons, etc.. Halo: Reach negatively "evolved" what Halo 3 did by giving us loadouts, bloom, static health and armor abilities. If done right (should it not impact the game negatively), stabilizers complimented with Halo 5's sandbox and new weapons could possibly, in a way, give us a true bootleg evolution of Halo 3.

Either way this was just a thought. Stabilizers still aren't classic Halo whichever way I try to explain it so I leave it up to you guys for an opinion on this.

Right. But by that logic, you could say the same about any of the Spartan Abilities, which many people do. Because of that, you gotta draw a line somewhere. Legacy Settings are meant to be as simple and close to classic settings as possible. Don't get me wrong, I totally understand what you're saying, but it just doesn't align with the goals of creating these settings. Sorry :/

I'm actually not a big fan of stabilizers in general, even in regards to the 'normal' Halo 5 Gameplay. I feel it just disrupts any momentum I'd had previously. Same goes for real life, that's why I stopped taking my prescribed daibdngasdjjbf ;B;KJASDdjkbgsajkdbjssDGFJSBGFKJSDBFGKJDBFGSDKJSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I typically call it Classic Slayer, and it's all abilities off, no loadouts - map weapons and power ups only.

I would recommend a something like this:

Classic Slayer - True classic settings
Classic Slayer Evolved - classic + stabilizers, clamber and sprint?

Anything beyond this and you might as well enable it all.

Did I mention I ****ing love clamber!!!

This is an awesome idea that I believe belongs in the Forge section of the forum. I say that because the only way that a Legacy Initiative will survive and grow is if there is a strong community backing via forged maps specifically for these settings.

I agree with you and can’t stress enough how very important it will be to standardize these settings across the community. If Halo Customs has agreed on 150% jump height and ForgeHub is trying 125% then we have unnecessarily divided the community, lowering the chances of a Legacy Initiative being successful. I hope you’re spearheading this across the board.

I think the ultimate goal should be to create content that warrants a Halo 5 Legacy Playlist.

I have contact with the staff of both FH and HC, and this post is on both sites. I could try to get Warholic to move this to the Forge thread. Maybe it'll get more traction there. But I totalyl agree with you. The only way Legacy setting will work is if they become standardized. If you could help me out and spread this to anyone you think would be interested or able to contribute by testing the different versions of the setting I iterate on, I would greatly appreciate it.

Awesome. I've got you back whenever you need a tester. Also I know fame28 potentially has interest in creating a Legacy Narrows. I think it would be neat if we could rally the community to create their favorite Legacy map (maybe we can get MultiLockOn to do Lockout 8D). This would be a great way to get people used to the new forge by having them do something familiar. It would also cause a burst of content for Legacy Settings to allow time for more original content creation.

Once the settings get hammered out I commit to do at least one map for Legacy Settings. Also, it might be worth reaching out to GodlyPerfection to see if he has any Legacy plans cooking in his Forge Product Team, or if they are only focused on generating new Vanilla settings content.

The Gold Pro Team are planning on getting things in order for classic settings. We are waiting for forge so we can go abit more in depth, with things like maps, scripting, a CE like spawn system, as well as improve on placements/timers etc. Then chat with the forgers who have done stuff in the past. I imagine it will be better to design around 2 v 2.

Id say just play the game as it is for now. Let the meta of the game develop for another few weeks before deciding to alter it, so the forge delay is handy in that respect. In Halo 4, Gold Pro/Unity had Thruster Starts for a long time, then eventually we realised it was **** (another get out of jail free card) as the meta of thruster starts developed, when we thought it was going to be an uber cool strafing technique.

You arent going to get an agreed upon "Legacy" settings I think, classic Halo is different for many. I imagine on multiple starts, legacy is Halo 2/3 style BR starts, 3 min timers etc, whereas I would be looking at buffing the dmg so we get 4sk pistols, 1 min timer power ups, vertical based asym maps etc.

This! Halo's core is movement, verticality, and the simultaneous empowerment of both the individual and the team. Buffing the pistol to a 4sk will increase its utility and thus further empower the individual off spawn, and the combination of 60s power ups with vertical, asymmetrical maps will create huge movement incentive and expand the movement/combat skill gap by rewarding players who possess extensive map knowledge and movement mechanic mastery.

If that's the direction Gold Pro is going in, I can't wait to help you guys test. I've developed a few vertical asyms in Maya 3DS that I plan to convert over to forge in December.

Enh, I like Truster. Clamber and Stabalize isn't really a problem to me either. I do with Ground Pound, Shoulder Carge and Sprint (sadly slide goes with this, never had a problem with slide either)

I think to just throw them all out thre window is a waste, as some abilities are absolutely fine and improve map traversion and add gameplay without truly taking away. And the best blend for a classic setting would be one that embraces elements of Halo 5 movement options also.

Thruster, Clamber and Stabalize are all easy to balance abilities that do not really remove anything. When making classic settings, I don't feel a barebones full classic is the best way to go.

    You're missing the point.

But for the record, I'd argue that all the abilities take away from gameplay.

    I'm nit
I'm not missing the point. I just don't feel removing everything is correct. I dont think emulating Halo 2 is the best option either.

I honestly care little for Clamber or Stabalize. Thruster adds alotnto gameplay, in theory. The key is to find the middleground.

I have strongly protested againsts AAs and sprint and alot of the stuff that we had since Reach. But I don't feel the likes of Thruster are an issue, and there comes thes problem designing for a classic style is all well in good but how classic should legacy be?

And I do not believe full classic is the best option, and to allow full on classic to become the norm that classic style maps are built to when it isnt how I feel a classic style gametype should be reflected in Halo 5. I forged for classic Mods in H4 and if I entend to do so again I would like to chime in my opinion for how the norm for classic-esque games modes is handled.

The original point of Legacy settings was to be as classic as possible. This is the problem, though. Everyone likes different aspects of the game. Everyone's definition of classic is a bit different. Some want to experiment a bit more and combine new elements with old ones. Finding something that can be widely agreed upon and enjoyed by many is the goal here. On that note, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the topic.

I will say that most of the Spartan abilities in H5 work because they work together. They can be chained together to create some very unique and creative movement options and to execute some neat combat maneuvers. I do not think that many of them have great potential on their own, however. Thruster, for example, can be a very panicky option. Clamber, when not chained with other movement options, becomes a crutch for jumping. I strongly believe that most of the abilities work only in tandem and create several problems on their own. This is why I would suggest that keeping Legacy settings as a classic alternative to standard settings is the best option.

Well that's what legacy settings are, they replicate the Halo 2 style gameplay for those who prefer it. I think thruster has potential, with the right tweaks...everything else I couldn't care less for. I'm okay with Legacy settings being barebone, and GP having a few more bells and whistles.

But why is legacy linked to Halo 2? Many people have different ideas of classic why is why something like this will difficult to pull off.

GP will be as far away from H2 as we can make it.
