Microsoft is partnering with Saber Interactive and Innova Systems to develop a Halo Online for the PC, but right now, it's a closed beta only available to Russian players. There's no campaign mode in Halo Online, which uses a "heavily modified" version of the Halo 3 engine so it'll run on lower-end PCs.

Here's the setting, for those interested in the possible lore impact:

Halo Online is set on a secret UNSC space installation called Anvil, where Spartan-IV soldiers train together in war exercises to sharpen their battle skills and test experimental technology.

As part of a Q&A, the company answered what are probably some of your first questions:

Could this come to America, Europe, and elsewhere?

Right now our focus is on learning as much as we can from the closed beta period in Russia. Theoretically, any expansion outside of Russia would have to go through region-specific changes to address player expectations.

Will it ever be playable on an Xbox One?

Halo Online was built from the ground up specifically for the PC. There are no plans to bring Halo Online to the Xbox One.

Is this supposed to represent the future of Halo on the PC?

Halo Online is a learning opportunity for us as we explore ways to welcome new fans to the "Halo" universe. We're excited to release a "Halo" multiplayer-only PC experience tailored for Russian gamers.

When might Halo Online actually be finished?

Halo Online is a learning opportunity for us as we explore ways to welcome new fans to the "Halo" universe. There is no definitive launch date at this time as we proceed in our closed beta period in Russia.

This is purely speculation but perhaps the game's regional exclusivity is a controlled experiment to examine the monetization system of the game. If Halo Online meets their return on investment projections via the micro transaction system then could potentially see a global release for this game. Essentially there are two beta trials occurring right now. One to make sure the game functions and is in a playable state. Second to monitor how profitable the game will be using a free-to-play model. If the game doesn't meet their profit expectations we could see Halo Online having a subscription fee or a possible one time retail cost.

A Halo PC game would lend itself to community modding more easily as hardware restrictions would be penetrable again. What would that mean for us? Possibly stripping up campaign assets and creating custom levels, game types and more. We shall see...

They can actually fix that pretty easily. It's pretty much the reason why it's in beta...

They are dead set on this whole sprint thing huh?

I don't think it'll be that big of a problem on PC, but that's just me. This is just my opinion, but if you go back and play Halo 3, it's noticeably slower than recent games, so I can understand why they're modifying it in that regard.

On console, you have analog input for movement, whereas on PC, you'd only have two speeds - crouching and not crouching. With the introduction of sprint, you'll have three, which is common in games on PC. I also don't think it will be nearly as frustrating on PC since you can actually aim without acceleration/aim-assist. I think sprinting actually makes sense for this version of Halo. We'll have to see though.

Edit: Alternatively, they could go the CS:GO route and have three speed modes: normal, walking and crouching.

Remember folks this is PC.. people are going to mod the hell out of this. I downloaded the files and started up the engine and tested out all the maps and its really smooth. the br spread seems a bit more but hard to tell without shooting someone

It has to have the community behind it for the mods though. If Microsoft came out with a Steam workshop equivalent, it could be big. I don't know if they're willing to do that though.

I couldn't see any reason why they would do that. I think they want to force all this stuff in the game. If it has mod support I couldn't see microtransactions work the way they want them to.

That's why I emphasize the need for a steam workshop equivalent. I'm going to assume you don't game on PC but the steam workshop allows content creators to make stuff for the game within the limits provided from the devs. For example, in Counter-Strike: Global Offense, people can create skins and maps to be used in the game. The skins are then adopted by Valve for official use in cosmetic micro-transactions. The same goes for DOTA 2. A lot of the time, these funds are actually used to fund eSports events!

Creating a workshop makes it easier for the content creators to make reasonable mods for the game while still providing hacking countermeasures.

Okay sounds interesting. Would a map editor be possible as well? (or is it to much for this "workshop" thing?)

I can't say for sure how they would implement an editor for Halo Online, if they actually choose to release one, but Valve provides an SDK, which is harder to get into but has a much more comprehensive set of tools. With it, you're basically able to edit everything from geometry to audio. Since Halo Online is focusing on micro-transactions, I don't know if they'd open that up if they wanted to charge for map packs. Microsoft will probably want them to get away with as much as they can.

I don't know what to expect since they used a heavily modified Halo 3 Engine. Forge Mode isn't exactly guaranteed.

It never did get completed and the project eventually fell though but back in 2005 there was a promising software being developed by halo fans and coders called Prometheus. I remember seeing screenshots of it that I cant find now but it was basically like Valves SDK and was planned to have the ability to compile map BSPs and radiosity in halo custom edition. They now have some tools like OpenSauce that can do so many things in Halo CE

Seeing these people create amazing software like this is why i believe that giving PC gamers a new engine will open up a whole new world of mods

There's also another open source Halo clone being developed called Project Contingency. Nothing that substantial yet though.

Remember the Halo Online gameplay trailer we told you about last week? If you go to watch it now, you'll notice that it's no longer there: Publisher Innova Systems had it taken down over a copyright claim. And we're unlikely to see another one anytime soon, as Microsoft has issued a DMCA takedown notice to Github, forcing it to remove access to the game files and a new launcher.

Modders have been poking at Halo Online ever since two of them, Gamercheat13 and Lord Zedd, got their hands on it and helped YouTube user Noble create the aforementioned video. One group was even working on a launcher called ElDorito, which provided "a framework for the game to be playable, as well as a custom console with a plethora of features we believe are necessary to the game," according to a team member.

But yesterday, Microsoft dropped the hammer. "We have received information that the domain listed above, which appears to be on servers under your control, is offering unlicensed copies of, or is engaged in other unauthorized activities relating to, copyrighted works published by Microsoft,” it wrote in a DMCA notice sent to Github. Github, understandably, has complied with the demand to remove the files, while the ElDorito team is "a bit spooked" and has put the project on hold.

Interestingly, while the launcher has been deep-sixed, the actual game files were, at last check, still available. The Halo Online Wiki notes that it can't post the link to the download, and so interested parties will have to look for it elsewhere. But "elsewhere" is a hyperlink that leads to Pastebin, which contains another link leading to Mega; and on Mega is a 2.1GB file called Halo Online.zip. I can't verify its contents (and, for the record, you **** around with it at your own risk), but it's reasonable to conclude that it's the unauthorized build of the game that started all this business.

Halo Online is hardly the hottest thing to happen to online shooters since 2Fort. In fact, it's built on the old Halo 3 engine so that it can run on lower-spec machines. But it's also, for now at least, only planned for release in Russia—and as we all know, nothing makes people want something quite so much as not being able to have it.

I am thinking about all the Youtube Halo Online videos they made in the past week to gain more popularity and make hype. :)

I've always wanted a Halo game that combines all the maps and game types into a single unified engine. Halo Online is the closest thing we've seen come to that and I can't wait to hear more from the modding community. El Dorito team is truly amazing: standard Halo settings, forge mode...

I know this is copy pasted from PC Gamer but just an FYI, Gamecheat and I think Lord Zedd too had nothing to do with the "cracking" of Halo Online. https://twitter.com/Gamecheat13/status/583789226845741057

But yeah Microsoft should **** off already, this is the closest thing to actually having Halo 3 on PC and they expect PC gamers to sit around and not do anything about it after begging for the past 8 years for a new Halo game on PC? Its not like the game even costs money, its ****ing region locked and full of retarded pay-to-win elements.

Microsoft takes it down because they don't want advertisement? That's all I can see from that. The community is doing the franchise a favor and they blow it outa the water.

Been playing some. Game is atrocious. It's got **** strafe and horrible spread, and they somehow managed to remove descope, add sprint, make aiming even easier and adding perks to Halo3.

I guess it'd be cool if modders picked it apart and made a decent game, but it wouldn't ever get big because it wouldn't be officially supported and be at risk of cease and desist if anyone were to try to run tournaments.

      I'd rather just play Makeshift.
