...a large number of signatures on this forum are used for that purpose. Myself, zombie, and Dax alone on this page use it for that purpose. It's also an expression of uniqueness for members. There is nothing to gain from removing them other than some screen real estate. The complaint that it is "distracting" is a minor inconvenience that is very easy to get over. Losing it would anger a lot of people who use the space.
If the goal is to prevent signatures everywhere, then would it be better to give users the option to block signatures? Or set limits on the amount of text / pictures that can be placed in a signature?
How about this for a solution to the signature debate - text sigs are allowed, just no images. That way forgers can focus on advertising their maps if they so choose. I know this was done on HaloCustoms recently and it worked out just fine.
How bout no sigs at all and instead we have a portfolio section where users have all their maps listed? Members can express themselves more than enough with their profile pics.
Honestly I don't see what's wrong with keeping the images. Nothing wrong with having some differences between other forums. I think we used to have a setting in user's CP that they could turn off other member's sigs. If that option is still there than there is no problem. If it isn't than that is something to add back in.
Actually you can toggle off sigs, I can't see any sigs or avatars in the forums. I sometimes forget I have one, but I do use it & like it.
Then this is kind of a waste of a discussion. Members that don't like to see sigs can choose not to see them. Members who like to see them have the option to. Everybody wins. We can make it more apparent of this option to choose I suppose for members that didn't know they had that ability. Best of both worlds as it were.
How about back to the quote notification idea? Will that ever be possible? I think that is a very solid idea.
I'll add it to my tech suggestions list in the staff discussion. That way we can refer to it again when we start making more technical changes around the site.
Some kind of map portfolio? One page I can have pics and descriptions of all my maps. Didn't titmar do that as a blog and it ended up being stopped for some reason? I think that's a cool idea.
don't get rid of sigs but do enforce more stricture use of them, the way some people set them up can be really distracting and portfolios would be a great way to organize your maps.
I don't like that some people are saying simply do away with signatures. I, for one, love making and showing off signatures... And I don't really get the desired attention when posting a thread, other than criticism, really. That and the GnA section is gone. Dunno, just wish people cared about GnA, used to be a big thing here. If not, guess that's how it goes, just gotta say that that's a big deterrent for me. tl;dr is there a way to emphasize GnA? I get this is a halo site but it's a ****ty halo site if you can't get some graphics in too
Even with sigs and avatars diabled, I still think there's just too much wasted space on the forums. This isn't just an FH thing, but rather my opinion of most forums. Too much wasted space. I want to consume information, not scroll for days. With sigs and avatars both disabled, I'm still only barely able to get two full posts on the screen at once, so long as those posts aren't lengthy. This is a problem, in my opinion. There is literally a third of my screen's real estate being used by blank, open space below someone's post, before the next one starts. A THIRD! I wish there was a way to turn that bottom bar of each post (report, reply, reply with quote, multiquote) into a vertical bar instead, and shove it to the far right hand side of the post, rather than adding more vertical space. Doing that, plus reducing the size of the Member Details info below the user's name, and moving some other stuff in-line, and you can easily double the amount of posts visible at a time. Check out this super ****ty photoshop I threw together real fast-
the shoutbox should read from top to bottom, in chronological order, just like those who read in english actually read. Having it any other way is completely counter-intuitive and dumb.
I don't particularly object to the change, but I disagree with it being "completely counter-intuitive." Ever used any SMS app ever? Or an IM/chat interface ever? And considering the chatbox is basically the latter, it's bang in line with an almost universal standard. I think there's logic to having content and then text, so the message box is at the bottom. And having the most recent chat nearest to the text entry, which will then become the most recent chat when submitted, also makes sense imo. EDIT: Wait. I totally misunderstood you didn't I? If so then I agree with you for all the above reasons.
