Life of Pi was really good. It seemed very true to the book but it's been a while since I read it. Regardless, it's my favorite movie this year.

@Peg, cool I never heard of that. With the full selection I really dig Netflix.

I'm a little disappointed about the recent reviews for the Hobbit. Looks like I'll have to go see what I think for myself... soon, my precious, soon.

As for a recent movie I watched? Lord of War. It went way beyond what I expected... it's very a unique mash of sort of half documentary and half hollywood action/explosions/stuff... what a weird combination. Let's just say I really liked it for its creativity and message. Would recommend it

Edit: Am beginning Looper right now, then the Dark Knight Rises later (I haven't seen either)... I'm very much excite.

I'm contemplating getting Apocalypse Now... would anyone recommend it?

I'd definitely recommend Apocalypse Now, if you've got the 4 hours to spare. Not in any negative way but it is an exhausting movie.

Something I feel I have to recommend is Disneys "Wreck-It Ralph".
While I'm not a huge fan of anything Disney & Animated, It has a really wide range of audiences, mainly gamers. The references are pretty damn hilarious, and there is ALOT of them. There are even some references for the older retro gamers. Be prepared for a moral of the story about 'Friendship', Like I said it is a Disney animation. But the humour totally makes up for that.

I'm sure some of you may heard of it or even seen it but if not I reeeeaaally recommend it. I was laughing ALOT. Especially for a Disney that kinda comes off as a kids film.

Imagine an AlcoholicsAnonymous meeting, for depressed video game villains...

If that isn't enough to make you want to see this, then it probably isn't for you, but I think alot of you may actually enjoy it.

    Here's a trailer.
    http://youtu.be/87E6N7ToCxs
    -----------------------------------------------

Just saw the Hobbit aswell. Amazingly done, and far more book accurate than LOTR was.
They even threw in alot of extra stuff to fill the story out, with an explanation of what Gandalf is up to during his "AFK" moments from the book. However I won't give it a final opinion until all parts are released. Part 1 seemed more innocent and even funny at times, but I was expecting that.

Make sure you watch Apocalypse Now Redux. The "original" version wasn't the director's original vision for the movie and is pretty clearly inferior as a result.

Meh they used alot of the main references in the trailer. There are loads more you just gotta look for them, The second half of the film focus's more on the storyline than the gaming references, but even so the whole film is hilarious and alot of the films setting is one massive Mario kart reference.

While it was an amazing idea by Disney, especially focusing on the ' Bad guys' instead of the good. Considering they actually had permission to use known game characters I think they could've done more with the idea of seeing aload of our favourite villains instead of turning into a standard Disney film. Still funny as hell though. I was really hoping to see 117 walking around in the background to be honest. It's a shame but I didn't expect Disney to get everyone.

You don't have to downplay the kids aspect of the movie. Kids movies, especially Disney movies, can be entertaining even if they don't contain inside jokes for adults and older teens. I may be mistaken but I think a lot of people on this site enjoyed Tangled and were not afraid to say it.

Still haven't seen Tangled but my girlfriend keeps saying I should.
No I understand that, I just didn't want to promote a film that doesn't fit with any other mentioned genre here. I was hoping people will watch it for the references, and then realize that it's actually a brilliant film on its own, just like I did.

Now I know that the members here aren't afraid to admit that Disney films can actually be really good, I won't downplay it next time.

Just for the record, the villain in Wreck-it Ralph is by far the best antagonist from any Disney film. Ever. (In my opinion of course). But I won't spoil it for you guys... :)

Those reviews are complete horsecrap. Their reasons for not giving the film high grades, are because "there isn't enough character development" and because "the movie is too long". Both reasons are just plain retarded. Sure, the movie is longer than most other movies, but it definitely didn't feel long to me, leave alone too long. People may call me biased because I'm a great LOTR-fan, but I really did like the movie the way it is and I think Peter Jackson did a great job with this movie. It has similarities with Lord of the Rings such as some of the songs from the soundtrack being re-used as well as nice little references to LOTR for the people who watched that trilogy already, which are things I really appreciate. But it also has a lot of fresh new stuff and PJ realized that he had to combine the two (new and old) in order to make this into a movie on its own, yet connected with LOTR. As for character development, it's the first movie of a trilogy; no **** they're not making the characters go through a full personality change just yet. And was it really any different in The Fellowship of the Ring, a movie that blew the world away and was and is considered a masterpiece?
I mean, sure you may not like it but at least have solid reasons on why not to when writing a critical review. Honestly, I think people that whine about The Hobbit for such reasons should just stfu and gtfo. It's definitely a great movie and worth watching. I recommend it for sure, especially to LOTR-fans.

I heard it was very fan-fiction-y. Too detailed and too "Peter Jackson'd." I can't see myself hating it since I really liked the book. I'll let you know what I think when I see it (should be soon).

Hobbit Reviews said it would be too long? Really?
The first film was just under 3 hours in length I believe, and when it finished I was literally sitting there thinking "Wait... That's it? We have to wait another year now?"
Not because I was disappointed with the film, Because time flew by when I was watching it.
After that, I knew why they had to split it up into a trilogy (Besides sticking to the LOTR feel). Because they wouldn't be able to fit it in just one, or even 2 films.
Bearing in mind that The Hobbit was an easy read, some considered it a kids book. In comparison with LOTR which was alot more detailed. In order to keep the same LOTR feel to the film, I imagine they had to make up for the lack of details from the book, and improvise. But I for one loved the film, and cannot wait for the next part, and the CGI on Gollum was literally amazing. So much more human than before. I actually felt sorry for him at one point.

I think the main difference between LOTR and Hobbit is that there is a sense of urgency in LOTR, If they fail, everything will die basically. In the Hobbit it's more of an adventure to reclaim some land... I wouldn't say it's "Fan Fiction-Y" Just alot more innocent, as sauron hasn't started ****ing **** up yet.

Main difference between film and book though is probably the fact that you also get a look into the start of LOTR, with how Sauron (The Necromancer) comes to power and gandalfs involvement with it.

it was about arcade games, Not console games, and its better to make new villains then add onto old ones, making a contradicting storyline.

It's not like any of the game characters were part of the story. The actual villain for the story, (A made up one, not an already existing character) was awesome. He made half of the film what it was. They made up a game called "Sugar Rush" that resembles Mario Kart an awful lot but everything is made of candy. Like I said, The old game characters and the references are all just in the background and one liners.

And while it's true that it's based in an arcade, Theres another game in there called "Heroes Duty" that's like a knockoff to Gears of War (I think). They kill "Bugs" in the game, possibly a reference to Locusts, and it looks an awful lot like Gears.

While that isn't a huge stretch, it was more of a reference to the rail FPS games you find in arcades. They even handle the rail shooting a particularly clever way.

That said, I was very very let down by the movie.

Fair enough. Well I'm not gonna sit here and defend Disney any more than I have already. It's only Disney, and as far as animation goes it's one of the few good things that has come from them IMO.

It's a shame you didn't like it, I watched it with my girlfriend and we weren't entirely sober at the time, so perhaps thats what made it funny, but we both said we still really enjoyed it.
