I was scrolling through loads of different maps last night hoping to get some inspiration for my next forge, when I came across an interesting user-made Quake 3 map. It really caught my eye, but I couldn't gather enough from the pictures so I figured I might as well create a Quake Live account and check it out in game. Only thing is, I have no idea how to load up custom user-made maps. I have the file with the map downloaded, and that's about it. Where do I go from there? Any help would be much appreciated
I assume you got the file from lvlworld? You can't open those maps, or any for that matter, into Quake Live. The reason is because you have to manually implement the map file into the original map database folder in the downloaded Quake 3 software folder.
Mhm. If you download the full game, there should be a "baseq" folder that has all the original pk3 files in it. You just have to drag and drop the downloaded file from there and it will appear in game under Skirmish. I think the game costs around twenty dollars if you plan on buying it. Multiplayer is barren, so the only options you really have are campaign and playing with bots. I never delved so far into the site, but there may be an option to install Quake Live. You could always try looking for that and going from there.
Well this is disappointing :/ Considering I only wanted to walk through the map to get a better feel for it, I think twenty bucks is a bit steep, haha. Oh well, thanks for the info Aubs [br][/br]Edited by merge: Wait what did you mean by this? I already made a Quake Live account on the website and was able to play that for free, but I'm pretty sure the selection of maps didn't include any user-created maps, or the option to find them.
I mean that there may be an option to install the game somewhere on the site that I never knew was there. If that is the case, there would more than likely be place in teh respective installed folder in which you could place custom map files to play. However, the chances are slim given you haven't purchased to pro version, but it would be worth a shot. I'm not certain, but you may be able to look at custom maps in the downloadable demo of Quake 3. Don't quote me though as it may have limited options since it's not the full version.
I had never thought of actually looking through the maps.. I've been using screenshots/panoramas/videos as well. I think I'll try what you're doing, Dax
