I paid for the map pass, and I didn't feel hard done by when people got them for free. I wouldn't have cared if they'd just let everyone keep them, or if they'd taken them away after acknowledging the mistake. What I don't appreciate is being treated like an idiot. Did they actually expect people who saw this go down to swallow this "our plan all along!" crap? I know she didn't make the call, but as the person tasked with fronting this farce, bs angel's name has never been more appropriate. Admit you screwed up, do whatever you deem appropriate/is legal to clean up your mess, and move on. It's not that hard, so why are they playing this stupid game? This attempt to save face is false economy.
I'm sure that along with the actual map files there's a hidden license of some kind or another that was included with the purchased maps but not the free maps. As soon as the trial period is over, those without the license can't play the maps online anymore.
@ Pegisi while you may not have felt done wrong I was a little miffed that by buying the map pass I had actually spent more money than I would have had to. I don't have a ton of money to put towards gaming so hearing that I had actually wasted some of it because they ****ed up was rather frustrating. If they hadn't fixed it I would have lost a lot of trust in giving them my money. I agree though that they shouldn't be telling us that it was planned when it's so obviously a cover up.
Yeah, I'm with peg on this one. I see Shoe's point as well though. i was glad I was able to get the maps for free. I was able to cover them in videos and release them quickly which i otherwise wouldn't have done, and frankly with DLC coming so quickly after a game's release I don't think it should cost ten dollars anyways. The stupid part is that this was clearly a ****-up, and that now they're selling it off as part of the plan, which will most likely result in me not buying the maps at all when I otherwise would have. That is unacceptable. Oh well, I have enjoyed the maps so far for the most part, but this is ridiculous.
Idk. You're entitled to your opinion obviously, but I'm pretty damn poor and I still don't mind. I think a fair number of people who got it free knew full well they were exploiting a glitch, and if I'd gotten it this way then it certainly would have been true of me. Thus I'd have considered myself to be stealing it on some level, since I was taking it for free knowing full well that this isn't what they intended. I'm not condemning or judging those who did get it free whilst knowing this, not at all, I don't really care. But the practical fact is that I would have been stealing it on some level. For me to then be pissed off is effectively me saying "I'm pissed off because I wouldn't have paid if I'd known I could have stolen it." That doesn't really sit right with me. Again, not judging people who did get it this way, but I don't feel comfortable acting hard done by for other people benefitting from a mistake.
I see your point, I just didn't want to be told that I payed more than other people for the same pack. In all honesty I don't know why the map pack is out so quickly anyways. Overall, this was a mess. Hopefully the next pack will go more smoothly.
Peg, I should have said it more clearly. I know bsangel didn't actually choose to do all this stuff.. should have said Microsoft or something. I don't mind losing the map pack itself, I mind 343i thinking I'm stupid enough to buy this. Pretty sure 343i can't limit our use of the maps offline. Most likely, no Crimson DLC playlist and no Customs, which isn't a huge deal since you can't forge on them. Honestly, I wouldn't have paid for the map pack, and I wouldn't have paid for the game. It's a fluke I have both for free...
And hopefully with smaller arena style maps. I'm really digging Harvest right now. CTF on that map is superb.
Because they're brazenly selling DLC as just part of the game experience now. It's no longer an optional thing for hardcore devotees that is developed separately, well after the game is out; it's something they work on as part of the main game project, and it's ready to be sold the day the game ships. They only sat it on the bare minimum amount of time necessary to make it feel like something other than a complete gouging of their player base. Pegasi pointed out to me that in one of the pre-release videos, they actually said they used one of these maps to do base testing of CTF for Halo 4 prior to release... I mean, wow. That's about as explicit as it gets. These maps were done and ready long ago. They only didn't include them in the game because they want to get that sweet DLC cash, and their customers are so used to ponying up for maps that nobody's batting an eye.
So it's for sure going to be taken back to those who got it for free, huh? Damn it... Thing is though, everyone's talking about how 343 is ****ing up big time by doing this and how they're losing their fanbase, but we all know it's Microsoft that's making them do this. If 343 had their way, we would all probably be playing these maps for free. Microsoft ****ed up in the first place with the free download glitch, and now they're trying to cover their asses. None of this has to do with 343. I'm sure 343 wants to give us more details, but M$ probably has them by the balls.
Logical issues. Microsoft is screwing up =/= 343i is not screwing up. It's possible both are doing a bad job. Microsoft is undoubtedly screwing up, though. How do you guys think Microsoft could have handled this better? I'm trying to see whether you guys have different justifications for the same logic..

Well, I feel a little better that my MSP wasn't a waste. I can also see why some people who got it for free are pissed right now. I can though smile when I imagine Frankie getting chewed out by some Microsoft Executive after their blunder.
It was Microsoft's blunder not 343i. They were just the ones that had to play it off as their own little plan so that they can still earn some money from whoever managed to download it for free.
