I'd mind auto pickup a lot less if it wasn't combined with a waypoint over the carrier's head. I think that makes CTF MUCH less dynamic, and removes much of what I love about the gametype. A big part of this is having to maintain defence whilst making an attack. With a waypoint over the carrier, you are much more able to push forward with your whole team and not worry so much about base defence, because if someone grabs your flag whilst you're all out of base you can see exactly where they're taking it and cut them off. There's much less of a reason to keep an eye on/presence in your base, which makes it much less enjoyable for me. I loved the teamwork aspect of having to balance pushes with either a solid defensive presence, or making damn sure that no enemies push past and get behind you when you're all pushing.

That said, I don't think Ragnarok is the best basis for praising auto pickup overall (or rather decreasing criticism). Big maps like that generally involved solid runs anyway, so dropping the flag was less instrumental than on smaller, arena type CTF maps. Those suffer more from auto pickup imo.

I dunno, I think the waypoint is also what made MLG flag on Adrift so awesome. It keeps people on top of the action, makes the cap harder and allows the viewer to realize holy crap, they're about to score...it builds excite. As well, you don't want to let them pull your flag, even with the waypoint, because you need it at home to score so you still play some defence. This is related to MLG flag though, not MM..where flag at home is off, so I can see your point there.

That's all very well from a viewer excitement perspective, but I place gameplay value above spectator sport potential, especially when we're talking about regular MM where viewer experience is irrelevant.

I'm never too sold on the whole "keeps people on top of the action thing." Call my cynical, but to me that just translates to making the game easier even if you're not paying a proper amount of attention. You should be on top of the action because you want to win, not because the game is constantly prodding you saying "Hey! Do this! Go here!" I sometimes feel like they've put Navi in this game...

Adrift flag would suck without waypoints on. It's awesome with them on.

That's essentially the way I'm looking at it. Paying attention isn't relevant when the map design allows for convoluted escape routes which are hard to track. You could argue that's a problem with Adrift's design but it's what we have to work with. There isn't any arena flag so we can't really argue the merits of tracking the flag carrier that was easier on Midship, or even the Pit. I guess you could say that Solace flag might be more interesting with waypoints off, but even still I don't know I would agree given the level of clutter on that map.

Furthermore, defence isn't exactly an exciting position to hold. Now, as someone who has played team sports for my entire life, I completely understand the necessity for a defensive position in a truly competitive team sport, however I don't necessarily feel that it works in CTF quite right when the waypoint is off. Something like hockey/football, you'll always have awareness of the location of your objective, which allows the defence to engage in the game in more interesting ways without having to necessarily sacrifice that defensive security. In hockey, the defence can shoot from the point, carry and be physical. In football they can force a turnover and score.

Essentially what I'm trying to say is I don't think defence is necessarily being abolished but its position and roles are changed slightly. Rather than sitting entirely in your base (you zone/endzone) the entire game (yes, I get that is a bit of an exaggeration), you are now given a bit of that "arena" feel, where you can keep track of your objective easier so your defence can now be a bit more offensive, while still keeping track of your flag and playing for the stop when the necessity arises. You'll now be more likely to stop the flag near their base, then counter cap as a defender of the flag than you ever would have just sitting in your base trying to prevent the steal/keeping track of their direction.

Also: with the removal of dropping, you no longer have the option to sacrifice location security for speed, which promotes slow, covered routes 90% of the time in flag if there isn't any waypoint over your head.

This is mostly applicable to 4v4 flag, but even bigger flag (like Ragnarok) isn't exactly fun to just creep up a side unawares.

Not at all. That 40 sec game Sharp mentioned earlier was a very rare spectacle. I enjoyed every game our team went into, especially when both teams were well-coordinated.

If you ask me Big Team Slayer needs extended. I barely have time to enjoy it before the game is over.

Big Team needs CTF, not just Slayer.

    True this.
Dominion is probably one of my favorite gametypes if I'm going in with a complete team.
Agreed on BTB objective variants as well.

I would prefer a separate Big team objective playlist.

i agree on separate playlists... otherwise you'd have a lot of silly voting issues... (ragnorakragnorakragnorakragnorakragnorakragnorak)

also, where the hell is our fileshare stuff?
i would laugh/facepalm if they dont add that...

it would basically kill all forge forums if they dont add it in.

Im doing the campaign at legendary now, mission 8. (Flying part = AMAZING!) Do not proceed, if you have not played the campaign.
But i just had to stop by and ask how the soundtrack is called when you enter the large arena to destroy the Composer (From the crade... = Chapter)
Here is the video to it, i swear i heared an halo 3 soundtrack in there, mixed into it.
Sounds amazing, back to mission 8 now, the campaign is coming to a close very soon i assume!

just did my first proper foray into forge and I may have found where they hid the precision movement.

Don't know how useful it will be for everyone either but if you hold an object and then look straight down or straight up is move a lot slower.
