SO episode 2 was pretty good. So far overall I'm please with the series. Next episode looks like we get to see the Covenant. Hopefully they don't look retarded.
Looks like there training to be ODST? His brother was in ODST armor and there throwing up before missions for no apparent reason (drop pod training?) but the odst armor looks better, still not sure if the marine armor is training armor or not though.... Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn - Part 2 - YouTube
It's officer training, not ODST training. CAMS is essentially West Point. The vomiting is a side effect of the cryo training process, which is also the cause of Lasky's blisters/sores. Apparently the cadets are given some kind of injection, briefly put into cryosleep, and then rapidly thawed and and thrust into a combat exercise to simulate a rapid deployment. As far as the armor goes, they wear padded training armor during their exercises and are firing what look to be hardcore paintballs. I've said it before and I'll say it again... hot damn is Silva fine.
I love how the boss lady (cant remember names to save my life) pretty much congratulates the guy after the fight "See me fight just then " "There may still be hope in you yet" all that disobeying is forgotten you got in a fight in the cafeteria GJ!
I lol'd at that. Not because she was funny, but because that was just soooo awful. I'm your squad commander yet I'm going to act like the school bully? Also, in the class room why was like all of Lasky's squad (except Lasky, because he's so "edgy") around the hologram thing? Yeah that's how to have a lecture, have a group of people stand around the thing the other students need to see. Student in back: Hey teacher, could you like raise your voice a bit and tell the other students to sit the **** down. There are other students in this class than the 6 people who show up on camera. Also, best way to rally your troops to tell them that what they're doing is worthwhile. "Just look at Sullivan. This morning both his parents died." Sullivan: "Wait...what?" YOU HEARD ME YOU HAVE NO PARENTS BATMAN I made up the last two parts but you get what I mean. I didn't really like this episode. Fair amount of inconsistency. The end of the first episode showed something landing, yet in this episode which appears to take place several months later (if they are now near the end of training) and nothing has been made of what landed. It's like the two episodes appeared out of order. Nothing was really expanded further from the first episode. What "classified" thing is Sullivan keep staring at. Yes, those are UNSC troops fighting in what looks like a dilapidated parking structure, we get it. Why is Vickers' so pissed off at things (other than because he is ginger and has no soul). Is that girl from Narnia Lasky's love interest? Wait until prince Caspian hears of this, he's gunna be pissed. I hope the third episode shows a bit more action (any would be good) and less forced humor.
Lol, Frankie Cameo! @Pac My thoughts exactly. I think Chief shows up in the next episode? Just a hunch though.
The second episode wasn't several months later dude. It's within the same week at most, if not the next day Early wake-ups is standard for most ****ups like dissobeying orders in a training sim. So the thing that flew in and parked up in space (did not actually land if you were paying attention) may not have been noticed yet and even if it were they would hardly let the students find out would they. Why else would Commander Black be staring into space looking concerned about something as he sends ODST troops here and there. And for what Sullivan is watching, it's leaked battle footage of soldiers fighting an unknown/unseen enemy that use a weapon that emits green and purple light. Something like that would obviously be above a mere students classified clearance so how else would they build up the fact that something big is happening outside of the school except through leaked footage. He is watching the footage because he is interested in watching fighting and wants to know what the higher ups are hiding. As for why Lask turned around and started wailing on Vickers, if he had told you that your mother wished you were dead instead of the son that was the 'real' one (IE: not a skinny whiney emo little *****, seriously watching that guy stare off into the distance thinking -deep- thoughts is giving me flashbacks of Dawson's Creek *shudder*) would you not turn around and beat the **** out of them too?
No. All sorts of context clues say that's wrong. First of all, Lasky goes from screw up to capable leader of a team in 1 week (not counting that whole fainting thing)? They clearly say they are doing their last training exercise, which means unless their entire training was a week long means this second episode must take place months after the first, or at the very least a month (army boot camp is about 12 weeks or 3 months). The obvious intention of showing that was that the craft was landing. It was well within the atmosphere and going down. That's like showing an airplane near an airport. Sure it could be just stopping by but most likely it is going in for a landing. Also you're assuming people know about what was in the sky. Nothing has been revealed at all about what General Black was moving troops about and looking worried. I'm not saying the students should know about it, I'm just saying nothing further was revealed about that, whether that is some comm chatter in the background or some slight reference, there was nothing. It's generally not good for continuity of a story if you introduce something in 1 installment and then completely ignore it for the next installment. Again you're assuming. That could be footage of them fighting insurrectionists, nothing is explained about it, which is part of my complaint. Nothing in two episodes has given that any context. Also I don't know where you're getting "enemy that use a weapon that emits green and purple light". I looked at the clip over and over and the only thing I see that matches that description even remotely is that at 3:19 there is some green light on the wall but it certainly isn't clear that it came from a weapon. While that prediction that it is the Covenant makes sense, they haven't hinted to it at any point in the two episodes. Again, assumption. If you're going to fill the gaps in their missing logic with your own that doesn't make the scene any better. Yes, obviously he enjoys seeing what the UNSC is up to. Obviously the UNSC doesn't encrypt files all that well if a kid is seeing it, though I suppose someone could be sending them to him. ...I didn't ask about why Lasky beat up Vickers. That was obvious. I asked why Vickers seems so pissed off all the time.
If you payed attention to the 'battle' in the first episode you would have heard Vickers tell Lasky that he is "Not in charge anymore" Meaning he was in charge at some point before the series takes place. So he was already a capable leader but something happened (Probably his brother dieing) to change his view point of the war wich is causing his current rebel streak. It also shows that it was not thier first training that we saw in the last episode and that they have already been at the school for some time. Also proven by the fact that they already know how to put their gear on and **** that is what is covered in Basic training or your first few weeks at a school like that one. Ok, I'll admit it could have landed, and perhaps the higher ups do know about it but since we are following the story of the cadets why would we have to know everything about it? We hear what they hear. This is something you really need to pay attention to background chatter for. For instance after Lasky's little stare off on his ledge again as he heads back to his quarters he walks past the warthog and you can hear a radio transmission from it that says something about "threat level red" When was the last time you saw a normal human able to toss another human fully laden down with armor, ammo and weapons across a hallway? The reason the 'kid' is seeing them is because he is supposed to be some super smart hacker type. Why else would someone who's stomach sticks out much farther than non existent chest be in the military? (seriously look at him when they are in the wetsuits just before the operation in second episode) They could have done a better job explaining this definitely but how much do you want them to set up in the first few episodes without it being super obvious? And Vickers is angry all the time because he is an asshole and that is his character. I'll bet the major turning point for Lasky will be when Vickers agrees to 'Follow" him as Narnia chick put it. Yes I'm making a lot of assumptions but until the rest of the series is out how can we do anything but? At least I am making informed guesses.
All that, "you're not in charge anymore" implies is just that. At some point before Vickers said that, Lasky was team leader for some drill. That doesn't say anything about how capable he was. What can be inferred by his actions of running out of cover with no plan and disobeying a direct order is that before that point he was not a capable leader. Any other reasoning for Lasky's supposed lack of conviction is just speculation as it isn't directly explained or even indirectly explained. Just because you believe the story to be clear by you filling in events as you likely see them doesn't mean the story itself holds water. I can make up all sorts of reasoning for the parts that aren't explained well enough but that's the whole point behind criticism isn't it, I shouldn't have to. That would be a good explanation if they kept to that. They clearly don't as there are numerous moments when events are shown with no students watching (the space craft in the sky, the few scenes with General Black, etc). All I'm saying is if you use up screen time in your first episode to foreshadow some future plot element, your second installment should at the very least further that in some way. "Threat level red" doesn't really count as that doesn't give any context to what the threat is about. Those kind of things give the audience an idea that there is something going on behind the main story being told. I suppose they could be going for the approach of hinting at a bunch of unrelated "behind the scenes" things and then link them together eventually but that still requires a lot of give and take from the writers of the episodes as it does the people watching it. ...I saw a guy fall down, not get "tossed". He could have been shot, he could have been pushed, an explosive could have gone off propelling the person, all things that aren't shown in the clip. lol, it doesn't work like that. "Some super smart hacker type" is up against other super smart people. In the halo Canon I have a hard time believing some kid, no matter how gifted, is cracking ONI encrypted files, especially ones that might be detailing engagements with the Covenant. There is actually quite a lot of ways characters in stories can be given a lot of context to explain their personalities. ...k The point I was raising is the weaknesses in the story. By arguing these weaknesses by "assuming" what you believe to be true that doesn't say anything about the weaknesses of the story. It becomes an argument about what you believe they meant versus what they actually said. Basically what I'm saying is you chose to argue my criticisms of their story by pointing out what you believed they meant to say. I'm saying they should have said those things in the first place, as is the point of critiquing something.
lol I never said the story wasn't weak. It could be a hell of a lot better but would you really want them explaining the backstory of every cadet there? We would still be doing training sessions and other combat drills or class room stuff instead of next episode being the point at which **** starts going down. Somethings in movies and TV shows need to be assumed otherwise viewers start to feel like they are being bashed over the head with things that can otherwise just be hinted at. (like how every Metal Gear Solid game has to explain what a metal gear is every 5 minutes) Lasky would not have been put in the position of leading the team if he did not show the capability to do so before they started field training. Sulivan may be the super smart hacker or knows someone who is or some **** like that but he is getting footage that he should not be seeing. His reasons for it we don't really know but do we really need to know his reasons? My guess is when **** does start going down he'll be the one to recognize what it is out of the students. Everything that is in the series is there for a reason, some left hidden to intrigue us into doing exactly what we are doing. They could have written a better story and maybe even done a little bit more back story but what do you really expect from a microsoft run project... And I'm not saying that I'm right, I'm just saying what makes the most sense based on the information available. That said I am usually right about these kind of things. Maybe we will get more of the other cadets back stories in the Halo 4 campaign. We already know Lasky is there.
What's stuck between a rock and a hard place? What happens when an immovable object meets another immovable object? This thread.
They set how long each episode is. The first episode was 19:20, the second one was 16:43. If they arbitrarily set how long each episode is they could certainly fit in more content, especially when it is important in getting the audience invested into what they're seeing. I'm not saying we need 10 minutes on each character but so far Lasky, Sullivan, and the Narnia girl, and the asian dude are the only ones I know anything about. As most of their audience is probably just waiting to see how Master Chief is portrayed there has to be a lot of importance given to the main cast to counter act that anticipation for what little action the chief may get. Granted it's a fine line between too much backstory and just the right amount where you're invested in the characters but so far I don't feel like they've hit the correct ratio. From the looks of it all it takes is to ask the CO. Lasky could have just been assigned team leader or could have asked for it, none of that is clear. His capability to lead can only be judged on his actions as seen in the two episodes. In the first episode it was extremely poor, in the second episode he showed cleverness as well as the ability to hold his teammates trust. It does matter, that is all part of establishing character. As well as his reasons for doing so. "Microsoft run project" is a meaningless statement. They are just the bankroll. They hire real writers, real production crew, real actors, etc. I can expect whatever I want to expect, again the point of criticism. It's only 2 episodes in, it could get better, it could get worst. The point of discussion is to point out what faults and what positives exist. "I'm usually right about these kind of things"...you're usually right about Halo live action videos? Extremely doubtful. And Sarge, as waylander said, the point of this thread is discussion of the series. We are doing just that. If you don't like reading it, ignore us and continue on with your day.
Microsoft run project in the fact that the main reason it exists is to hype up their next game to try to sell more copies. I doubt any of them or even the guys at 343 put in any more thought than that. If they did the production would be bigger. The uniforms, equipment and even the writing and acting would be better. And by "I'm usually right about these things" I meant guessing what will happen to the characters as the story develops in a series. Not always mind, but often enough that I can be confident of my guesses. Anyway all I was trying to point out to you earlier is that there is information there that could point to a different interpretation of the story thus far than what you thought. Never said it could not have been done better. That said I'd rather find out more about Lasky and the Narnia Chick than some super skinny secondary character so I'm glad they are not delving too deep into Sulivan's story, same with Disappointment to Asian Daddy boy. They could Flesh out Vickers personality and back story a bit more. There has to be some other reason he hates Lasky so much beyond just Lasky ****ing **** up for his squad.
I'm trying, I really am, but I just don't find this series enjoyable at all. I will keep watching because it is Halo, but I wish Neill Blomkamp was involved. Also, is their motion tracker not really a motion tracker but just linked to some gps type thing in their helmets? If so, why wouldn't they remove their helmets every time?
