    Distance
    Created by Zombievillan

    Recommended Players: 2
    Required Gametype: Smackdown

Welcome to Distance. This week's 1v1 Smackdown map (for Round 2) is a perfectly-formed asymmetric beauty created by the fabulous Zombievillan. A veteran of three tournaments now, Zombie has become quite an exciting forger to look out for, especially when it comes to asymmetric layouts. Not only does he craft an entertaining playspace, he never fails to entice with his aesthetic designs.

One of the faster playing maps, Distance demonstrates what players can accomplish with some quick reflexes and a twitch sniper. The layout runs over the top of itself in certain areas, but never fails to force player movement at the right moment with the usage of drop downs and one-way routes. To enhance the already quick-paced design of the map, a set of two way teleporters allow players to jump across the map and surprise their opponent. One must always be on their toes playing on Distance.

One of the more surprising factors to Distance is that despite having been in the works for many, many months the aesthetic theme still remains somewhat unique. The map employs the use of white window strips to break up the floor and accented color lines for baseboards around the walls. Zombie's persistence utilizing pieces in ways many others choose to avoid always gives his maps a unique appeal.

What happened to this? And the FHF article that was supposed to run over a week ago?

Is this just going back to throwdown style where we have nothing but 2v2 maps featured and contest announcements for the next two months despite all the promises?

Just to be clear, I have no issue with this being featured. Just the lack of anything else forge related going on.

Checked this out in forge. It's a pretty interesting design. There's a few minor things I don't like about it, like the GL pedestal and the Camo jump across the death pit. The two snipers are cool, but they spawn at the same time which I didn't like.

There's a 2 by 2 unit wide pillar near the red sniper than players can use to manipulate the radar with and another 1x1 unit wide pillar near gold Sniper as well. That's 2 out of 2 maps so far with borderline map/radar manipulation... What gives?

Also, am I wrong or weren't maps not supposed to be "auto-featured"? Is every one of the Smackdown maps going to be featured?

    Not too shabby Zombievillain. Congratulations.

I see the staff smuggled this one in there. That's kinda silly.

Congrats nonetheless Zombievillain. I'll check this map out later.

May I add, I was under the impression these weren't to be featured myself. But don't fret forgehubbers, this was voted by staff as the worst of the chosen maps. That's why it's in the earlier rounds. The rest of the maps are sure to blow your minds, lol.

At schnitzel, don't leave so quick. I have braced myself and am ready to take on all of the heat & critiques I have been anxiously been anticipating, and I'm not being sarcastic.

At nooch, I'm confused on what you mean about radar manipulation. Wouldn't the radar haters like to be able to do that? I'm not being a smart aleck, I really am just curious.

At isao, are you saying they smuggled it cuz its bad?

No, because I haven't seen this until now. I don't have any judgment about the map at the moment.

I like those y larges and the window floor accents :) They're unique, which I think is pretty hard to do at this point in Reach's life. I don't really like those two snipers, though. The same spawn time? .. sounds like each player can get one. Doesn't sound like the sniper will be a big impetus for movement. Which ... may actually be intended.

This isn't true, don't let Zombie's modesty fool you. This is a great map. Its position, or any other map's position in the tournament has nothing to do with how well it was received.

Never been a fan of 1v1 Grey/Arena maps, I'll just leave it at that. They become very monotonous after a while.

I can't believe it. Schnitzel just congratulated a friend of the staff for a feature.

If you try to abuse the 2x2 pillar, you'll find that there's a jump in the middle of the path. An easy one, yes, but jumping forces you to commit to a certain direction, and when you do that, your opponent can easily back pedal and get you within range. There's also a wall that allows for some very easy nade banks, and the pillar is small as it is, so it's not an issue.

The 1x1 is way too small to cause any real issue; you might get an annoying battle every so often, but its benefits far outweigh the negatives in this case.

I think it's been said before, but so that it doesn't look like we're dancing around the subject, I'll say it again. We stated initially that maps would not be featured solely on the basis of being in the tournament, which is still true. In past tournaments, featuring maps was a very effective way to get maps distributed, which is also still true. So now we're at an impasse. We want the maps to be distributed with as little confusion as possible, but at the same time, we don't want to feature a map we found not up to traditional feature standards. Basically, it's an all-or-bust situation.

We worked on our maps with that knowledge in our minds; if we couldn't put forward 8 feature-worthy maps, then none of them would be featured, at least not instantly. Some could be featured later on, but even that risks the integrity of the tournament unless we limit our selection to one or two maps, which wouldn't be fair to all the other authors, community included.

To summarize, yes. All of the maps will be featured, but not purely because they're tourney maps. Rather, they will be featured because we collectively feel that they are deserving, and it also provides a consistent tournament format.

Why would the radar haters enjoy map/radar abuse? Exploiting the maps is one of the reasons why people did not like enhanced radar in the first place. Are you implying that the radar haters would love an abusable map just so they can ***** about it and say "I told you so?" Sure, there might be a of those few around here but I would hope most people can be mature enough to simply discuss it (as opposed to ignoring it).

Both of those pillars are still borderline, in my opinion. Just the fact that it CAN happen, even though it's "annoying", says that not much was done to prevent map/radar manipulation in these tournament maps and that there will be probably be more broken scenarios in the rest of the tournament.

It's just as easy for the manipulator to back pedal as it is his opponent. They only thing saving these pillars (more so the 2x2 near Red Snipe) from total manipulation, in my opinion, apparently are grenades and the Sniper Rifles somehow, not the little jump you mentioned.

Sorry to have to make you repeat yourself.

This just seems all too fickle. I understand that these maps are not being featured because they are in the tournament, but at the same time you said they are being featured because it provides a consistent tournament format. Seems contradictory.

So all the maps in the tournament are going to be featured, even though at the beginning of the tournament they were not supposed to be. I wonder how many of the tourney maps are staff maps that the staff have collectively decided amongst themselves that they think are "feature-worthy"...

What I don't understand is why featuring a map is considered the best way to distribute it to contestants. IMO, a sub-forum in the Smackdown section could be where all of the tournament maps are released. Of course it is too late for this now, but for future contests it might be a better option.

Map looks great as always Zombie. I'll download and check it out.

Hey, c'mon Noochy. Calm down. I seriously wasn't being sarcastic bro. I thought you were talking about the 2x2 pillar between gold snipe and 1x1 pillar. But it's hollow so you can jump through it making it possible to trick somebody using their radar. That's what I thought you meant by manipulation. I will say that it's possible to fight through that one though.

On another note, I dont see the big deal about the features. While I had the idea they wouldn't be featured, they would have been front paged anyway so the publicity is all the same. I could care less if it made it. I have enough features to save a third world country without my tourney maps even being counted. With that being said, I don't even think this map is feature worthy, lol.

At schnitzel, I appreciate your maturity bro, but I still want your opinions on the map. I'm sure you can give me that without losing your cool.

    Thank cluck, good friend.

I know you weren't being sarcastic. I was just responding to your questions. I'm as calm as it gets dude. Sorry if my tone came off otherwise.

No, the hollow pillar you are refering to is fine. I was refering to the pillar near Red Snipe made out of 4 brace larges.

    I saw this may somewhere.

    I remember the layout.

But I do remember loving it.

Congrats ZV. I didn't know this was up for Smackdown but seeing as it is now I am fervently satisfied with it.
    Awesome :]
