I know every Halo 3 map has been remade with Reach's Forge. But it's something I haven't accomplished yet. Plus, I see it as a send-off for Halo 3 (and all it's nostalgia.) Anyways, I'll be re-making either Rat's Nest, Cold Storage or Last Resort. Vote on the poll for which Halo 3 Map I should Remake!
Although Rat's Nest was/is my all time favorite (BTB) map from any Halo, I'd go for Last Resort. Rat's Nest has been successfully made before, and it's nearly impossible to give it the same UNSC look as the original map in Forgeworld. Cold Storage is a no no in my opinion, because again, you can't really set that atmosphere using the stuff from Forgeworld, and most maps on ForgeHub already have a similar map design, with overpasses, small corridors and courtyards. Last Resort is open, it's an outdoor map, it has interesting weapons and gameplay and there are a ton of tactics to be used. Go for that one. Side note: Please don't try to make an exact remake, I'd rather see you use your imagination and build it your own way, making it a better map in general, than to simply transfer the original map into Reach.
Well, I voted for Cold Storage. I was going to vote for Rat's Nest, but I have never seen a remake of Cold Storage and it was one of my favorite maps in halo 3.
I agree with REM, Last Resort. There have been a few good Zanzibar remakes, but I haven't seen a good Last Resort. Remember this though: Either make it exactly like the original or make a re-imagination. If you want to make it an exact remake but you simply can't because of Forge, we'd all rather see a really cool take on a last resort styled map than an imperfect remake.
Looks like it's leaning towards Last Resort. Keep voting! But I'm gunna start brainstorming for if I take on Last Resort. I'll say this right now. It's gunna be a re imagination. Im gunna need to make some changes if i plan to save some pieces. For example, one of my ideas was to make the big wheel half broken to save on pieces. I cant make the manual bridge (Ill try first) so that wont be the same either. Also, the building that used to house the energy drain will most likely have to be smaller or less detailed. Vehicles will change due to Reachs Sandbox. Weapons will most likely change. My goal is to make the map look and feel like Last Resort, while using some of the better things Reach has to offer.
Go for a last resort reimagination if those 3 are your main choices, and I agree a reimagination is probably the best thing to do. I've got a last resort remake I was working on a while back gathering dust because its a beast to do while keeping a nice look and low budget .
Your Camp Froman remake is the bare minimum. Sure, the map won't lag, but it looks half done. The giant wheel is not even there! I want something that actually looks like last resort. Not just as little pieces as possible. Plus, mine will be a lot easier since it's a reimagination.
Do tell what is the point of having the entire wheel? It is nothing more than aesthetic noise that has no impact on gameplay. Sure you can go and forge the entire wheel but you WILL run out of objects/budget. I'd rather have a fully functional split screen friendly map than one that is a burden to play on due to frame rate lag just b/c it "looks pretty".
Well seeing as there is a pretty good LR remake here, I think a strong re-imagination is the best way to go. Honestly, don't think you need the wheel or anything in this re-imagination; just take inspiration from the layout and buildings and design a new map from your own ideas that plays a lot like Last Resort did. I think that would be better in the end anyway, having a new map that plays like an old H3 map. It gives you freedom to make what changes you want and to try your hand at your own aesthetics.
rats nest, ive never seen a good re-make and it was a BRILLIANT map, i was going to go for last-stand but i dunno, id like to see them both tbh
This is the best approach for any attempts at remakes. More often than not, especially in the case of Reach, the maps do not or cannot translate either due to gameplay differences, forge limitations or both. In the end originality is the best policy when it comes to these things b/c we have all played the old maps and playing on them again won't be the same, and most of the time its worse, so having a completely unique design that captures the atmosphere and character of the classic map would hold up much better than just another remake. There is a time and a place for remakes and at the very end of Reach's life span certainly isn't one of them. Come Halo 4 remakes will be in higher demand in the first few weeks since everyone will be trying to fill their catalog of maps with the best classic so that they have that nostalgic feeling and really compare the new game to the old maps to see if they are compatible.
