Definitely looks like it's firing up differently than the thruster from E3. Here's the E3 thruster: Spoiler And here's nice slow motion of the clip in question: Spoiler Personally, I think it's the jetpack. The model looks like a jetpack, and the thrusters I've seen so far look very different in terms of where they sit on the player model.
^ Just lol'ed so hard at that But if the jetpack truly is returning to MM, I'm going to be extremely disappointed, as will the better part of the competitive community.
I could see the JP working in MM if they made it reduce your sensitivity significantly. That would make sense (because you're in mid-air so you're not pushing off a solid to turn) and gameplay wise because it would trade-off the height advantage for a combat disadvantage. Or, y'know - if it made people explode if they get shot while using it. I've found myself wishing for that a few times in Reach lol
A Jetpack has potential to be a good gameplay mechanic... It's just that it's implementation in Reach was so god awful it left a bad taste in every one's mouth. So long as the height and fuel usage are handicapped, it shouldn't be too big a problem. And with the advent of trait zones in forge, maps can be designed to compensate for the jet pack more effectively. tl;dr? Stop getting your panties in a twist.
There's a difference between something being "a good gameplay mechanic" and being an annoying one which is nerfed so much that "it shouldn't be too big a problem." I maintain that JP is more likely to be the latter than the former, and even then I'd say that the most likely scenario is that it's just as/nearly as annoying as in Reach because it doesn't get nerfed enough.
Probably considering the things we've heard from 343i so far... But all the same, it should be easy enough to nerf with forge.
How so? Trait zones only offer (as far as I know) the ability to change the same settings as gametype variants, just specific to a certain area. Gametype settings as they stand aren't sufficient to balance the JP, all you can do is increase gravity which messes with more than it fixes.
We don't know yet if we can set it to turn off AAs though. Then again, the sense of not knowing kinda invalidates my argument... lol.
^ Agreed. I think gameplay is a lot cleaner without AAs. That isn't to say I never want to play with AAs. I just generally prefer a more classic experience. As for jetpack, I think we need a bit more than that lil' clip to render judgement. Although I'm not happy to see any rendition unless it was seriously redesigned...bad memories on Uncaged and Reflection...
I'd like more of a jump-pack, like a lot of other people are suggesting. Takes more thought to use and no obnoxious hovering over your head. It goes past that, but that's the general idea.
Mayyybe a lower flight ceiling, too. Although I didn't have a huge problem with the jetpack in Reach.
You should be able to get from jungle bridge to top mid, and no higher. It should be closer to an extra jump than the ability to glide around the map like the green goblin.
I'm fine with the jetpack, as long as it stays out of competitive and is available for custom games instead.
I'm all for customization and such, and would love to have the regular jetpack as an option for customs, but I assuming they're doing a one-off that can't be tweaked and will be incorporated into matchmaking. With that in mind, I'd want it to essentially be a portable jump pad like people here are saying.
