Anime that are good and not for masturbation purposes: Baccano! If you want more I can keep going for a while probably, this one isn't as restrictive as the "doesn't have 8 year olds in it" list. EDIT: as clarification on the matter, I wasn't denying discussion of it, I was making the point that Teen Titans is not anime, I never said we won't talk about it, we just need to keep the majority of the discussion based on Anime. It doesn't hurt to have a little side comment in your post talking about Teen Titans, at least in my opinion it doesn't.
I keep meaning to get Ergo Proxy but I am worried that it will just be a sort of weaker Ghost in the Shell wannabe, kinda like how Vexille wanted to be Appleseed. Thing is dude I like anime that makes you actually think for a minute, not just flashing a pair of **** or child panties. Fan service ruins anime for me because it makes people think that it's only for weirdos and freaks, and they don't see it as a medium of film but rather as a genre in itself when in fact that are many genres within it. I've read y'alls list of favorite anime and I did not recognize a single list in it so I will tell you guys my list and tell me if you have even heard of these because if you have not I will be dissapointed in your lack of knowledge of what actually made anime interesting for people outside of Japan. No particular order just as they come to me. Akira Berserk Dragonball, Z (not GT though I do have it) Gits Appleseed Vampire Hunter D Blood: The last Vampire Patlabor Mobile suit Gundam through Gundam Wing (after that the main characters started looking like 8 year olds) Trigun Rurouni Kenshin Neon Genesis Evangelion Armatage And so on. Like I said earlier most of the anime I watch came out in the 90s at least in the states and 2009 is about the time that I really stopped paying attention to what was coming out because I was not seeing anything that looked remotely interesting anymore. And Sarge, Hellsing is good, Hellsing Ultimate is better if you like darker and more gruesome and slightly more sexually charged but not in the gross pedophile or hentai way. Though Ultimate is still unfinished with no sign of being finished anytime soon.
Watch it on an anime streaming site for a few about 5-8 episodes, that should be enough to get a good feel of it without getting too far into the story. The dub is pretty good as well, just so you know. (Ergo Proxy that is)
OK I just had a look at the Hellsing wiki page someone linked and they are up to 9 in Japan now? WTF? last one I heard about was 4 back in '08 and then nothing for ages. Off to madman.com.au I go. Things I found there: http://www.madman.com.au/news/evangelion-3-0-release-date-confirmed-for-japan/ And then some stuff from Funimation: http://www.funimation.com/appleseed-xiii
Yeah, the Hellsing Ultimate OVA is taking FOREVER to get all of it out, but it is so much better than the older series. As for You can (Not) Redo, that's taken a while too, just not as long as Hellsing. Speaking of things taking a while to come out, Mardock Scramble parts 2 and 3 should be coming out some time this year... I hope EDIT: I've heard of everything on your list but Patlabor. And I believe it is Armitage, not Armatage. I like it when I meet people who refer to it as Rurouni Kenshin instead of Samurai X. You just made me happy.
Patlabor is fairly old. It's from around the time of X and The first English dub of Akira and Ghost in the Shell movie. Patlabor movie trailers: 1 Trailer - Patlabor 1 - YouTube 2 Patlabor 2, The movie - YouTube 3 AKA Wasted XIII WXIIIatlabor The Movie 3 Trailer - YouTube There may have been a TV series as well but I have had no luck finding it. As for Samurai X, that was the name given to the OVAs of Rurouni Kenshin. They were good but I still enjoy the series more.
I'm probably one of the worst culprits when it comes to watching anime because of potential fanservice but I still like Bebop very much and it's one of my favourites by far. I don't jack off to fanservice either. It doesn't feel right. It's like a form of comedy to me as I find all the awkward situations rather funny. Some fanservice animes come with a decent story too, like Strike Witches. I didn't expect Railgun to have minor fanservice in it, I was legitimately watching it because I thought it looked awesome.
Ah, I've seen a few older anime like that (all the ones you listed it being made around) the plot for it sounds like a few anime that have come out after that though, and the animation style is a little dated in my opinion. @Sky: Same here, I watched Bakemonogatari because the story is genuinely engrossing, the fact that Shinobu is adorable was just a plus. EDIT: Also, this current cycle of anime starting up around now, is kinda disappointing, the only one I've liked so far was Campione.
So what if the animation is dated. So is the animation in Bebop and Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Doesn't make them any less good.
No, it doesn't make them any less good, it just makes it harder to watch coming from the quality of animation nowadays. There are some things that are fine to watch even if they are dated, like Dragonball. In fact, in terms of just the looks of the anime are fine, if that's all that was dated I would be fine watching it. It's the music/sound design and VA's that bother me the most about older anime. ESPECIALLY in dubbed anime, older dubs are absolute garbage. (for the most part, there are others that are tolerable like Dragonball, Bebop, and Trigun.) EDIT: I just finished Zetman, and boy it was good. If any of you like superhero movies or stuff like that you'll probably like it too. Instead of being one of those anime where the superhero just fights the badguys this is how he becomes the superhero. It's got dark and gritty elements to it similar to the Dark Knight (Batman movie) and is full of muddled definitions of good and evil. I wouldn't go into it hoping it would be a happy ending, hero saves the world, gets the girl kinda thing. It does get a little confusing towards the ending, but it works out.
Discussion time: Where does everyone watch/download their anime from? I have a few different sites but each one has better quality versions of different series. No links of course.
Well as far as streaming goes: JustDubs Animefreak Crunchyroll and when I can't find a series on any of them, I google "watch (insert anime title) online" Downloading wise, i used a torrenting site when I still downloaded them, I still do for stuff like the Bluray rip of Fate/Zero or stuff like that, but other than that I just stream stuff now.
I use AnimeSeason or WatchAnimeOn. They usually have what I'm looking for. As for downloads, I use BakaBT. However, I don't download anime often.
well, I might as well say I used Demonoid for my torrents. No point in withholding that bit if nobody else is.
I think it's ok, as long as we don't link directly to the site. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is finally getting an anime adaption! I previously read some of the manga when it was in Shonen Jump, but never finished it because it was cut. I'm pretty psyched.
I just read that they plan on making a new Sailor Moon series in 2013. Sailor moon 20th anniversary I don't even want to think of what this will cause, the revival of My Little Pony brought forth the bronies...
Haha, Sailor Moon. I remember there being controversy over satanic themes portrayed in the anime. I would like to see more of the older anime remastered. Not like Dragon Ball Z Kai though, with only a couple of scenes redone. That was disappointing. Top 10 Fantasy Anime: Spoiler 1. A Certain Scientific Railgun 2. Bakemonogatari 3. OOOOOh, something some of you might be interesting just started up, Sword Art Online. If you liked the theme and setting of .Hack then you'll probably like SAO as well since it copies a few things. Basically its in a Virtual reality MMO game and stuff happens that makes it so if you die in the game you die in real life and the only way out is to clear the games massive 100 floor tower, you cannot log out and your ingame avatar is changed to look like you in real life. Also, removing the headset you wear to play the game will kill you. @Auburn, why is that list pretty much only newer series'?
