Agreed. That window seemed to be about twice as long as it really needed to be. It's so frustrating getting a bulltrue and then dying, or shooting a guy, seeing his corpse start to crumple, and then getting killed by the DMR shot flying out of his knee. I understand that to compensate for latency there does need to be some kind of window, but it sure felt like this one was far too long (similar to the constant melee kill-trading that went on in Halo 3 and still happens a lot in Reach - remember pre-patch Halo 3, or any previous Halo game, where being quick on the trigger was rewarded by living?? Boy do I miss that).

I agree 100%, this would definitely be my ideal control scheme. They could call it "Classic" or something since it doesn't include the changes like Sprint being on the left click, taking crouch off that saddens me much. There are definitely enough people who like having the more standard Halo controls like this, and will put up with the inconvenience of having Sprint and AA on the face buttons.

Precisely. You have to draw the line somewhere, the game has to be able to say "sorry, the connection is just too bad, deal with it." You can only account for latency so much before you start breaking the game itself to do so, Reach proved this as far as I'm concerned. This decision utterly broke Infection, it's either a betrayal-booting fest as it used to be, or has booting turned off and becomes a greifers heaven as it is now.

I'm definitely concerned about moving crouch, too. I've been crouching with that stick for literally over ten years. It's going to be hard to adjust. I hate to bring up that old argument-starter, but it kinda feels like another way they're trying to appeal to COD fans.

It also has Jump on A, which is a shame because other than that it's a nice setup.

Melee on B? Reload on RB? No thank you. I think jumping and melee attacks require more precision with the right analog stick than AA,sprint, or reload because you most likely won't be aiming at something with the latter. It doesn't affect you as much to take your thumb off the right analog to perform these actions (with the exception of JP in reach, but i haz onza :p). That's how I've always seen it anyways, face buttons for the actions that aren't as dependent on aim/precision.

    Customizable controls would be ideal.

Ooh, so it's actually closer to default (IMO), it sounds like. That might be the choice for me, as a longtime default guy. I'd much rather learn a new reload location than a new jump or crouch.

EDIT - Never mind, it will still screw me up because they moved melee. Argh. I need to pore over these things for a minute.

The multiplayer lead that was on the MLG commentary with Walshy said that they really wanted to see people's reactions to Bumper Jumper's layout and gather some criticisms; it is subject to change.

If it doesn't, I'll probably stick with Recon. X to sprint isn't really that weird if you play Bumper Jumper on Reach, so I don't have a problem with that and I would find it weird to try and Ghandi Hop with the B button on the default scheme.

there are control schemes where crouch is on the left stick. and in the control options it still has an option for toggle crouch, as it has always had. well at least had in halo 3, i cant remember if it did in halo 2. except now the default seems to be that toggle crouch is on instead of off. i'll probably play with recon and turn off toggle crouch, so it'll be like classic style crouching.

i also use the "tactical" control scheme in cod, which is crouch on RS and melee on B. many "better" cod players seem to choose this so they can drop shot easily (which i do not do, i just hate knife on RS).

    Edited by merge:

wasnt default melee always B? im probably wrong because i hardly played reach and ive played halo 3 a lot more since reach has been out. i know it is in halo 3 though

I think melee used to be on the B button in default, but it was moved to the bumper for Reach, which I'm now very used to. I suppose I could backtrack. I'm just wanting as much continuity as possible - the more key functions move around, the steeper the learning curve is going to be for this game. Also I've just gotten to where I prefer having it on the bumper - it's nice and efficient to have all my means of attack in a very small area on the front of the controller, that being the two triggers and one bumper.

oh yeah, i remember the RB melee/ X reload now. that actually was convenient. i could always just use the recon controls and remap melee on my onza. if you really hate using the face buttons a lot, i would recommend getting one. it essentially has two extra bumpers that you can remap any button to one of them as well. it takes some getting used to, but once you do it can help a lot. and its cheaper than the standard microsoft made controller.

i have the tournament edition, its 10 bucks more but has some more cool features like adjustable resistance sticks.

I want an FPS that plays like an RPG. Where your playstyle, not your choices, impact the way you interact in the multiplayer sandbox.

I know that seems OT, but it was brought about by all the changes 343's making for Halo 4.

IMO, every single control setup is completely horrible, except default. Bumper jumpy is screwy with Nades on X and AA on LT, Recon is a bit poop because sprint on X (Should be LB, with AA on X) and I couldn't care less about the rest.

Looks like I'll be using default.

I don't know what HoN is and I haven't played DotA.

But presumably you would play and there'd be a set system of attributes (read: perks, probably) that automatically attribute themselves to your multiplayer character. So if you're sprinting around constantly, you might end up with maybe a 2% faster character after a while or something. There's no choice involved.

Balancing it (past the core gameplay of figuring out what weapons are on the map, the map design itself, etc) in title updates and such would simply be a matter of nerfing the more powerful attributes down to manageable levels. Even if you figured out what the "goals' you'd have to meet to get an attribute were, you'd still have a shitton of work to do to get there and the subsequent powerful versions of it. By then, if it were truly OP, it'd be nerfed.

Just something that evolves organically, and as such, would really limit player abuse and lend itself to balancing.

Sprint on X isn't hard at all. As a Bumper Jumper/Sprint guy in Reach, you can simply tap the button to engage/disengage sprint, and because it is pointless to use sprint mid-combat anyway you really don't lose any offensive potential by moving your hand from the left stick for a half of a second. It's easier to sprint on 'X' than jump on 'A'.

That being said, if settings stay the way the are now, I'll be on Recon me thinks. I'll be very sad to not have jump on a bumper, but that bumper jumper setup as of now is just bad. If they fix it up (preferably in the way I outlined above) I'll be using that. Pressing in sticks will always be crouch/zoom.
