When I compare English VA to Japanese VA, the latter tends to be better. Dubs have the tendency to be poor and lack the amount of emotion that the original voices have. I feel that it ruins the way the character was supposed to originally sound as well. The only reason I prefer Baccano dubbed is because the English language fits the setting.

    Opinions are opinions though.

I like dubs, but there are some things that just wont be as good dubbed, an example being; Stein's Gate. I doubt it will be good dubbed if it gets dubbed. And, Guilty Crown isn't dubbed either.

To avoid bias, I watched a couple of dubbed scenes of Angel Beats. Out of the three voices I heard, the only one I found decent was Tenshi's. The others' voices just don't fit their character in my opinion.

EDIT: I also came across this funny ass clip.

It really depends on how far back you go. Dragonball has probably the most annoying set of voices in Japanese, but then it was recorded in the 80s when audio equipment was not as good as it is now.

A lot of the older anime suffer from the same thing. The newer stuff I think has the problem of the English actors not taking it as seriously as they probably should or have trouble knowing how serious to take it.

Hard to put a lot of emotion into one scene when the next is some boobs or panties joke.

Well only the first season of Strike Witches has been dubbed as far as I know and too be honest I don't mind which I'm watching. Each character's voice works well in both languages and they all fit the characteristics of the girls.

But I also agree, there are some things that need to be dubbed and some that shouldn't be.

Got to be one of my favourite moments of the entire anime. Aside from the ending.

Drifting on to a new topic, I think I might get a jump start on Darkness and begin reading the manga. Thoughts?

I just read the first two chapters and I'm loving it. Such a shame they tactically place things in front of certain body parts. Damn them and their cleverness. It's teasing me!

For the most part ;) There's a suprising amount of borderline stuff in the manga.

I just love that the story is actually getting somewhere though.

Drifting back to the dub topic, my problem with English VA's is that their voices don't match how the character looks, and as stated above, the lack of emotion. Sure some English dubs are good, but I would pick my Jap audio over Eng any day.

Borderline as in violating Japan's censorship law. When you reach the chapter where Rito inhales Celines pollen and goes haywire, pay close attention to detail.

    [cough]the reflection off Rito's eyes[/cough]

Does anybody have any recommendations? I might watch Another after i finish my current anime depending on what i'm feeling. Any hidden gems that aren't driven by fanservice?

    STRIKE WITCHES!!!

No joke, the story behind it is as good as the semi-loli fanservice.

If you just want a story that pulls at your heartstrings then try Puella Magi Madoka Magica. No fanservice at all.

    Two of my favorite anime, no three, are only good in dub IMO;
    Deathnote
    Baccano
    Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood)

The jap VA's for FMA just don't fit, and Isaac and Miriam aren't as ****ing awesome in Japanese. Deathnote is just really ****ing hard to follow in subs, and the dub isn't terrible. (Ryuk is really good)

    Now, as for a suggestion on a non fanservice driven anime... I have a few;
    Fate/Zero
    Dusk maiden of Amnesia
    Another

The first two are ongoing series' and the last is a horror one that finished somewhat recently. Of course I always suggest Stein's Gate and Darker Than Black to anyone who hasn't already seen them.

I've watched most of the first season of Strike Witches ages ago. it's not driven by fanservice, but there's still more of than there needs to be. I only had a couple of episodes left, so I'll finish that first. Thanks Sky. Also, ♥ Lynette.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia looks interesting, but I'm not a fan of horror. I love mystery though, so I'll watch of couple of episodes today and see if I like it. Thanks Aschur.

    EDIT: nostalgia.

    I'm ****ing psyched.

    Code Geass R3 Gaiden B

Not sure why they put crappy music in a trailer, but either way, I cannot wait for this anime to come out. Code Geass was the first anime I have ever watched and was the show that got me into watching anime. I could say what it is about, but I don't want to spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen the series ;).

Bakemonogatari, as the name suggests (to those who know at least a little japanese) is based around the stories of those afflicted or affected by monsters. (Bakemono - monster/ghost, monogatari - story/tale)

Nisemonogatari is about fakes and those who are pretending to be something they aren't, and how even pretending to be the real thing can be dangerous. Likewise the name reflects its contents, Nisemono - fake/faker, monogatari - story/tale.

Likewise, even the prequel is the same in naming conventions I would assume, though I never went to look up the meaning of its name. These two are pretty easy to know though, as long as you pay attention to subtitles and what is being said.

Regardless, everything related to bakemonogatari is worth watching or reading. I just thought I would spew some relatively random information.

I realized recently that anime has changed me as a person. While I was younger I used to be absolutely terrified of horror/thriller films but now I've come to really enjoy them, especially horror mystery or japanese horror movies. I think I just like japanese horror better than american horror. I've liked haunted houses and thing like that for a while, but only just realized it was anime that made me like them.

Also, I started liking jazz because of anime.

As for strike witches movie... meh, I'm personally more excited for Kizumonogatari. And any extension of the steins gate universe. (Robotics;notes)

I realized that Welcome to the NHK! really changed me as a person, before, I used to act exactly like Satou. Would completely avoid any sort of attention and social engagements. But now, I'm at least a bit more comfortable with them, some how.
Could just be age, who knows.
