Exactly. I just couldn't stand being stuck with a pistol/ar for weeks while everyone else who plays 24/7 rapes me with their DMR/BR/CC.
Hmmm, maybe it's not Halo, but I do hope it stays scifi-ish enough. Maybe instead of a more arcade style sci-fi it'll become more like crashing on ruined planets and where stuff is seriously deserted and vegetation grows over. Yeah, the only way I can forgive this **** is if they give me a very dark campaign like ODST but not too much a feeling of being alone. How about a dark campaign but with still plenty of allies?
You're a space-marine stranded on an alien world shooting plasma bolt weapons at aliens and an ancient evil. Sounds sci-fi enough.
...I think you're looking for Dead Space then. I don't think Halo has ever been "dark". Unless you're talking about the general lighting or brighter multiplayer model designs. Btw, I have a hunch that helmet we've been seeing in these videos is just the starting one and we'd be able to buy through points/credits whatever different helmets.
ODST was kinda dark, but overall I definitely agree. Reach was the closest that Halo got to "gritty," and it still wasn't what I'd call dark by any means.
however, reach captured a mood much better than halo 3 did. You really felt like you were in a struggle at times.
Oh yeah definitely, Reach had the 3rd best campaign for exactly that reason imo. But then, Halo 3 wasn't exactly a high point for the franchise in terms of atmosphere and style.
tbh, i'd say H:CE had the best campaign because you didn't know what you were expecting. Plot devices like the cinlusion of the flood and first falling on the halo rings were brilliant because we wern't expecting it. And we were on our toes. Thats the reason why CE was the best. Right place at the right time, most importantly. ODST was second best because it had a fresh outlook and was a reshape, and a storyline that didn't oversell itself. The best bit was the atmoshpere and the soundtrack. And i'm stuck between 2 or 3 for the worst one. 2 was much much longer and had arbiter missions, but halo 3 had more character development for johnson. Reach just edged past those two because it was fresh, and although you knew what would happen, you got so tied up in it you didn't expect it, and when the deaths happened you felt a real emotiional connection to them (besides kat) George was a perfect example of it.
Lol, nope. Maaaybbee George (he's the guy who sacrificed himself on the Corvette, right?) gets some sympathy, but that's it. Besides him, I was glad everyone else died. Such boring characters.
theres more thought to the deaths than you think. Carter - Captain - Went down with his ship Kat - Brains of the group - Shot in the head Noble 6 - Lone wolf - last man standing, died alone Emile - CQC guy - Stabbed Jun - Stealthy sniper - went missing george - heavy weapons - went out with a bang :O
i thought halo 3 had the best campaign of any halo game, followed by odst, then reach, then halo 2, then CE. and Kat's death hit me the hardest, she was the only one i liked. Carter's was pretty good too i guess. i hated jorge though. and jun didnt really go missing, he went with halsey

...how do you figure that? I imagine VGChartz uses NPD group like every other business analytics group. Also wood wonk, Halo CE last huh...never seen that before.
nobody ever agrees with me. its partly because i played CE after i played halo 2, so i already knew the flood would appear at some point and stuff. but still, i thought it was the worst. missions like the library and at least one other, i forget which, got so repetitive that it was a chore to finish, i wasnt enjoying it at all. and i just really enjoyed the sense of epic-ness in halo 3.
This is heresy to many, but CE's campaign hasn't aged well to me. I loved it at the time and played it a few times through, but when Anniversary came out I was surprised how dull it was by current standards. I don't mean dull in the sense of "not enough action," though that's a part of it. What really hit me was how mechanistic a lot of it felt compared to Reach or Halo 3's campaigns. e.g. the level Halo. The opening encounter where you help the marines survive a few drop ships is amazingly lame: a ship lands on one side, you kill the few covies it drops off. A ship lands on the other side, etc. Wash, rinse, repeat. Then you spend a while driving around finding small, short-lived encounters and getting lost/waiting for waypoints to help you out. There are better parts, granted, but I think most of Reach's campaign levels feel more cinematic, action-oriented, and alive than a lot of CE's do. And that's not even getting into the fact that Reach doesn't have a single level I dislike as much as The Library. Add in some fairly bad/disinterested voice acting, too (they've gotten better at this with each game). However, my least favorite is probably Halo 2. I should probably re-play that to see how I feel about it now. All I remember at the time was thinking that it had a few very cool levels (especially the first scarab encounter), but otherwise was a bit of a letdown. I never felt immersed into the Earth parts, and boss fights were a lame and very unwelcome addition to the series (especially the last one - what an anti-climactic ending). Thankfully, they ditched that immediately after what I imagine was a pretty tepid response. I did like the "Arby" parts, which I got the impression a lot of people did not.
I thought the Halo 2 missions when you played as the Arbiter were the darkest. Quarantine Zone especially. The only dark thing about ODST was the lighting. I agree. CE's campaign was the worst, IMO (which does not mean it was bad, I still think it's great).
Fair enough, entitled to your own opinions. Just surprises me, usually the case is people love things they experienced when they were younger. I will address nutduster's explanation though. Isn't it kind of unfair to compare current mechanics for fps games with past ones? I mean at the time of Halo CE...that was about as exciting as it got. You might think it rather lame now that it was basically, covy ship land, find bad guys, next covy ship land, fight more bad guys (by extension...that really is how every fps single player game is ever when stripping down the situation to its bare parts), but at the time that was riveting. Especially on higher difficulties when it seemed like an onslaught of waves. Just seems to me like you're attributing modern mechanics to past gameplay in a judgement on how "good" something was which isn't exactly a fair stance.
