Skullcandy usually has a shittier frequency response than Beats by Dre. Maybe you're getting some kind of new Skullcandy model where they really stepped up their game though... I personally like Sennheiser HD280s a lot. They add a bit of color to the mid and low range so they're not ideal for mixing (like actual Production, not DJ'ing) but if those are your problem frequencies when DJ'ing, check 'em out. ($299.95 for 20Hz - 20k Hz) whereas Sennheiser HD280 Pros are $99.99 and have a range of 7Hz - 25k Hz. If you're a DJ, I would suggest getting those and investing in a super sweet new MIDI controller like the Novation Launchpad or something.
My friend has a pair of ATH-M50s and they sounded pretty good. I can't remember them perfectly but some of the low-end just wasn't there. This was the same day I tried out a pair of Sony MDR headphones though and although they're studio standard, they're pretty much known for it. So I'm probably just mixing the two up.
Specs don't need to back it up. It's purely subjective and even though Beats by Dre has smaller frequency range, some people might prefer it for its "increased bass." Especially if they listen to hip-hop and bass heavy EDM. If you like a lot of different kind of music though, you might find it to be hassle to mess around with you EQ more than you'd like. I haven't really listened to any Bose headphones in a while so I couldn't really say. I liked them when I tried out some noise-cancelling ones though, it was really nice. If you tried them out and like them, then they're good. Some might have a more "true" sound but I suppose that's all really subjective. However, it's probably best to get some headphones with some "true" frequency response if you're recording, mixing, DJ'ing, etc. Fletcher-Munson Curves basically shows what the average ear hears as painful/enjoyable. After a while, you tend to "tune out" frequencies that are most apparent when you're mixing, tracking, etc. (I certainly do at least.) It's good to reference so I'm not making any ears bleed. Maybe not the coolest story to most people... But I like talking about it.

I'm fine with Sony MDR-NC7s only $40, and they work. Also the battery (1 AAA) only accounts for the noise cancelling, they still work without that battery. I'm no audiophile and they function as headphones while not being too cheap.
I've for Beats Studio. I wouldn't have bought them but I was in an airport with no headphones and 10+ hours of flights left. Go Sennheiser, they're good I hear. No pun intended.
